NYSEThis report is from today's CNBC Daily Open, our international markets newsletter. CNBC Daily Open brings investors up to speed on everything they need to know, no matter where they are. Outside the Dow, the stock market is still cheery. This suggests that it's mostly the Dow constituents — "old-economy" stocks like industrials, financials and consumer discretionary — that are flailing. It's not that the stock market is giving investors money for nothing.

The two NASA astronauts who have been stuck on the International Space Station since their Boeing spacecraft ran into problems in June will have to remain there even longer, the agency announced Tuesday. They include NASA astronauts Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore, who launched on the challenge-plagued first test flight of Boeing’s Starliner vehicle. The two originally intended to spend about a week at the space station but will wind up having lived and worked in orbit for more than nine months, including the added time for the latest delay. When the capsule launches — a mission known as Crew-10 — it is expected to carry NASA astronauts Anne McClain and Nichole Ayers, Russian cosmonaut Kirill Peskov and Japanese astronaut Takuya Onishi. Until then, the foursome will continue training for their mission at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, NASA said.

New York CNN —Disney has cut a transgender storyline from its new animated series, “Win or Lose,” ahead of the show’s release. The original animated series from Disney-owned studio Pixar centers around a co-ed middle school softball team, the Pickles, in the run-up to the group’s championship game. Each of the series’ eight episodes, which will begin to roll out on Disney+ on Feb. 19, will focus on a different member of the Pickles. Earlier this year, Disney chief executive Bob Iger told CNBC that the entertainment giant isn’t interested in sending messages in its shows or movies. Speaking at the DealBook Summit last year, the Disney chief said the company’s mandate is to entertain audiences, not champion rights.

CNN —Police have identified the shooter in Monday’s attack on a Madison, Wisconsin, private Christian school as a 15-year-old female student, as they investigate the latest school shooting to devastate an American community, claiming the lives of a staff member and another student. Natalie Rupnow – who went by the name “Samantha,” Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes said – was found dead when officers responded to Abundant Life Christian School. Evidence suggests the shooter died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Barnes said at a news conference late Monday. It’s unclear whether the shooter’s parents owned or possessed the gun used in the shooting, Barnes told CNN. CNN —The commander of Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk group of forces has been replaced following Russian advances in the region, a military official said Saturday. The move comes after Lutsenko faced heavy criticism for failing to stop recent Russian advances on the key city of Pokrovsk. Russian forces have been spotted just three kilometers (1.9 miles) from the city, according to Ukrainian mapping service DeepState. Its fall to Russian forces would mark the largest setback for Ukraine in months and compound Ukraine’s struggles to get off the backfoot while Russian troops pile severe pressure on the eastern front lines. He added that Ukraine had information that North Korean soldiers may be being used along other parts of the front line.

Reuters —A Chinese businessman who had forged close links with Prince Andrew and was authorized to act on his behalf to seek investors in China has been banned from Britain on national security grounds. The ban on the Chinese businessman came after the contents of his phone were downloaded when he was stopped under counter-terrorism laws at a UK border in 2021, the ruling said. It said this revealed Prince Andrew had authorized him to set up an international financial initiative to engage with potential partners and investors in China. The prince, 64, the eighth in line to the throne, was a roving UK trade ambassador from 2001-2011. In 2022, the royal family removed his military links and royal patronages.

Kyiv, Ukraine CNN —Russia launched a new widespread attack on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure overnight, forcing the country to implement emergency power outages, Ukrainian authorities said on Friday. Once again, the energy sector across Ukraine is under massive attack,” Ukrainian energy minister German Halushchenko said on his official Facebook page. Ukrenergo, Ukraine’s energy grid operator, said it was introducing emergency power outages across the country. Russia’s latest assault comes after Moscow vowed on Thursday to respond to a Ukrainian attack on a city in southwest Russia, which Russia claimed involved six US-made ATACMS ballistic missiles. Ukraine acknowledged making “tangible hits on Russian targets,” Wednesday, including military and energy facilities, but has not said what type of missiles were used.

WASHINGTON — Key House and Senate lawmakers are demanding top federal law enforcement officials immediately brief them about mysterious drone sightings in New Jersey and New York, as the White House downplayed any potential threats to national security or the public. But lawmakers say that they — and the public — need more information after weeks of sightings in New Jersey and other states. “But the public deserves to know more, and it’s up to the FBI and Homeland Security to brief the public immediately. For weeks, residents have been spotting and taking videos of drones, which officials have described as commercial-grade devices and not typical “hobbyist” drones. "We’re going to try to get answers, and we’ll go from there.”So far, an all-member House briefing on the drones has not been scheduled, though some individual members have been briefed.
