But some people still seem surprised to see Trump nominate Pete Hegseth for defense secretary. It's a reminder that while Twitter — and Elon Musk — is influencing Trump, he's also a very, very big TV guy. Here's one clue: Trump has just nominated a Fox News host, Pete Hegseth, to be his secretary of defense. Mr. Musk has also attended at least one national security meeting with Mr. Trump alongside the likes of Stephen Miller, a top aide, and Donald Trump Jr., according to a person briefed on the meeting. But for now, both things can be true: Donald Trump has both Twitter and TV on his mind — even if he's actually watching only one of them.

Current and former officials also cautioned not to assume that the intelligence community is uniformly opposed to Trump. Ratcliffe was among a cohort of Trump officials who aggressively sought the release of intelligence related to Russia and the FBI. Telling Trump ‘war stories’Memories of the tumultuous first Trump administration remain fresh in the minds of many career officials. The report adds to some other examples of hateful rhetoric spreading after Trump’s victory. Gender played a central role in this year’s election as Vice President Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign emphasized reproductive rights. Even before his election, Trump and his supporters had targeted Harris with misogynistic comments throughout her campaign. On platforms like TikTok, women posted about the misogynistic comments they had received parroting Fuentes’ remarks, with many also rebuking the sentiment. A TikTok spokesperson confirmed that phrases like “your body, my choice” violates community guidelines, except for instances of counterspeech.

Pitchfork announced that its annual Chicago music festival would not return in 2025. In an announcement on social media and on its website, the music publication said it made the decision after assessing the rapidly evolving "music festival landscape." “For 19 years, Pitchfork Music Festival has been a celebration of music, art, and community—a space where memories were made, voices were amplified, and the shared love of music brought us all together." Pitchfork Music Festival was founded in 2006 by the publication's founder Ryan Schreiber, ex-Pitchfork staffer Chris Kaskie and festival producer Mike Reed. It is unclear if the music festival will move forward in the other cities, but Pitchfork said in its statement that it "will continue to produce events in 2025 and beyond."

Pennsylvania's hotly contested Senate race hangs in the balance nearly a week after Election Day, with Republicans declaring victory and Democrats holding out hope that the remaining batch of outstanding ballots will allow them to close the gap. A McCormick victory would further pad Republicans' newfound majority in the Senate, where they will hold at least 52 seats after the election. But even before the new Congress is sworn in next January, the outcome of the Pennsylvania race could have implications for the Senate leadership elections Wednesday. Pennsylvanians can cast provisional ballots when officials are unclear about their eligibility or there were issues with their returned mail-in ballots. McCormick’s campaign filed two lawsuits Friday challenging an estimated 15,000 to 20,000 provisional ballots in Philadelphia that may have issues, such as missing signatures.

But as overall monthly overnight stays in Portugal reached an all time high in August, some Lisbon residents are becoming frustrated by the impact of ballooning tourism on local quality of life. Following protests in September about the city’s housing market, thousands of people living in the Portuguese capital have signed a petition demanding a clampdown on Lisbon vacation rentals. The group behind the petition, the Referendum Movement for Housing (MRH), is seeking to eradicate the almost 20,000 short term vacation rentals in Lisbon residential blocks, hoping to free up housing opportunities for locals. CNN Travel has reached out to Airbnb for comment about the Lisbon referendum petition. Changing the Lisbon tourist industryFreitas stresses a successful referendum wouldn’t eliminate Lisbon tourist lets altogether, but prevent them from “existing in houses registered for residential use.” Landlords would also be prohibited from establishing new vacation rentals in residential buildings in the future.

AdvertisementMany voters who split their tickets between Ocasio-Cortez and Trump or other Democratic candidates and Trump pointed to two key issues: the economy and the conflict in Gaza. And the vice president sought to reassure voters concerned over the Israel-Hamas war and the plight of Palestinians that she would work to secure peace in the region as president. The president-elect made major inroads, notably in several Democratic-heavy states, as many voters remained frustrated over the direction of the country.

But for some people, this is the dream: They're watching Netflix at 1.5x speed. What craven need for speed goes on in the dopamine-wrecked frontal cortex of someone who watches stuff at super speed? Netflix's "Love Is Blind" was mentioned several times as an example of something great to speed watch. Our modern, insatiable appetite for video content might mean that we've adapted and stretched our brains to watch faster and faster. As much as I'd like to accuse these speed watchers of being monsters, I have to consider my own preferred method of watching movies: at regular speed, on the big TV — but looking at my phone the entire time.

As President-elect Donald Trump doubles down on his mass deportation plan, some Republicans are trying to assuage fears amid growing questions of who will be forced out of the country. The prospect of mass deportations is generating fear and apprehension among families with noncitizen members and businesses that employ undocumented workers. The president-elect has also said he would withhold federal grants to police that don’t cooperate in his mass deportation plan as well as use the National Guard to carry it out. But not long ago, some Republicans have resisted Democratic administrations' attempts to prioritize certain immigrants over others for deportation. “If he deports violent criminals, gang leaders and drug leaders, people who committed violent crimes like rape or murder, isn’t that mass deportation?” Muniz asked.

CNN —Hours after former President Donald Trump was declared the winner of the 2024 election, the Biden administration moved Wednesday to limit oil drilling in Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Oil drilling had been banned for decades in the Arctic refuge — a pristine natural region in northeast Alaska home to a wide range of threatened species. But a law passed during the first Trump administration required the federal government to hold two lease sales there for fossil fuel drilling. The Biden administration signaled Wednesday it plans to move forward with a 400,000-acre auction — the lowest acreage it could legally offer. “Today’s action by the Biden administration better protects the Arctic Refuge, and for that, we are grateful,” said Kristen Miller, executive director of Alaska Wilderness League.

Trump defeated Democratic candidate Vice President Kamala Harris, and Republicans claimed a majority of the Senate in elections this week. "We know kind of where the world is headed in a Trump environment because we've seen it before," said Jeffrey Solomon, president of TD Cowen, on CNBC's "Money Movers" Wednesday. One M&A advisor, who also spoke to CNBC anonymously, noted that Trump's disdain for Big Tech companies — historically active deal-makers — might keep them on the sidelines. Apparent GOP opposition to the CHIPS Act means that semiconductor consolidation might be challenging, the advisor noted, while cautioning it is still too early to know what a Trump presidency would mean. That advisor noted that smaller banks had been getting gobbled up for "some time," but that the pace and size of those acquisitions would likely ramp up under a Trump presidency.

Harris offered to console Democrats over the loss to former President Donald Trump, acknowledging they were "feeling and experiencing a range of emotions right now." Trump never did when he lost to President Joe Biden and Harris in 2020. After Biden dropped out and endorsed Harris, Democrats reveled in the change, flooding donation channels and crushing fundraising records. Specifically, he warned about traders taking the 10-year Treasury yield , a bond market benchmark, above 5% — a level it hasn't seen since mid-2007. To be sure, there are myriad reasons why the bond market has been in a state of tumult since mid-September, political considerations of a second Trump term being just one of them. "The bond market could easily nullify the impacts of another rate cut. That's because the bond market believes the Fed is cutting rates by too much, too soon, and is therefore raising long-term inflation expectations. It could carry "higher tariffs and mass deportations, which triggers stagflation in the US including a second inflation spike," the bank said.
