The back door to the College Football playoff is unlikely to be open for Ohio State or anybody else this championship weekend. And the Crimson Tide stayed in CFP contention as they prepare for the Southeastern Conference championship game against No. 20 Iowa in the Big Ten championship game away from a third straight playoff appearance. In the final season before playoff expansion to 12 teams, cutting the field to four might be tricky. ... Don't be surprised if most teams with openings are not willing to wait another week for coaches involved in conference championship games.

Three upcoming specials, celebrating the show’s latest milestone, will arrive weekly on Disney+ in the United States from Saturday, as part of a deal between the streamer and the BBC. “Doctor Who” has decades of adventures, villains and complex story lines for dedicated fans to immerse themselves in. CNN —More than 70 years after Disney had a cricket sing about wishing upon a star, “Wish” picks up that theme, in an animated movie that desperately wants to thaw out some of the studio’s “Frozen” magic. Hailing from members of that movie’s creative team, “Wish” doesn’t quite reach the stars, but it does shine intermittently while introducing another plucky teenage female heroine, gamely voiced by Ariana DeBose. The movie does however celebrate the power of wishes, and in the process, decades of Disney history. By that measure, “Wish” mostly delivers – a credible addition to Disney’s long filmography, even if it’s not exactly a dream come true. “Wish” will offer early-access screenings on November 18 and open wide in US theaters on November 22.

Having written about gender, dating, and reproduction for years, I’m struck by how blithely these admonitions to get married skate over people’s lived experience. On the rare occasions that women are actually asked about their experiences with relationships, the answers are rarely what anyone wants to hear. In the late 1990s, the sociologists Kathryn Edin and Maria Kefalas interviewed 162 low-income single mothers in Camden, N.J., and Philadelphia to understand why they had children without being married. “Money is seldom the primary reason” why mothers say they are no longer with their children’s fathers. “There are women that are just out here trying, and the men aren’t ready,” she told me.

In Hobbesian terms, life in a Fincher film tends to be solitary and poor, nasty and brutish, if not necessarily short. That’s the case again in his most recent movie, “The Killer,” about a nameless hit man — played by Michael Fassbender — a chatty loner first seen waiting for a victim to show up. In time, the mark appears, the Killer shoots but misses, and spends the remainder of the story trying to clean up the mess. “The Killer” is based on a French comic book with the same title written by Alexis Nolent (who goes by Matz) and illustrated by Luc Jacamon. What makes him ostensibly interesting isn’t his job or body count; what’s intriguing, at least before your eyes finally glaze over, is that he’s dull.

CNN —“Gremlins” turned a benign Christmas holiday into a snowy backdrop for cartoonish murders. Holiday horror films work for the same reason holiday tearjerkers do: There’s already an “emotional foundation” with holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas, DuPée said. Holiday horror is especially taboo because so many of its tropes are sacred — innocent children in footie pajamas! “It can be exhausting to be constantly faced with scenes of happiness, togetherness and love,” said Alexandra West, an author of several books on horror films and co-host of the “Faculty of Horror” podcast. “Putting a horror spin on these holidays offers an antidote and, in some cases, a reprieve.”Olivia Hussey in "Black Christmas," 1974.

JUST A 30-MINUTE helicopter ride off the coast of Belize lies an island where you can snorkel straight into the world’s second-largest barrier reef, then indulge in an all-organic lunch or a protracted pedicure. For a cool $5,000 a night, you’ll have it all to yourself. Even the chefs, masseurs and cleaners who work on the island of Gladden stay on a smaller isle, a short trip away. Private islands, once the domain of billionaires and billionaire Bond villains, have become less rare in recent years, especially since the pandemic upped the desire for minimal-contact holidays. Today you can rent hundreds of islands around the world, ranging from mini-kingdoms to the bare-bones stuff of Robinson Crusoe fantasies.

Today, with people still struggling to understand the contours of this deeply complicated conflict, the book seems essential. “Because that was absolutely the ambition of the book, to depict real people” rather than villains and saints. Because I admire “A Day in the Life of Abed Salama” so much, I agreed to moderate a talk with Thrall this Thursday in Brooklyn. The performance is strongest when Kamuyu is dancing. When she asks audience members if they know what it feels like to be othered, the question is merely rhetorical. Instead of reaching out to the people in front of her, she talks back to absent villains of privilege. Responding to the colonialist sound of a documentary about the Kikuyu chief Wangu wa Makeri, Kamuyu asks vital questions about who gets to recount history and who gets to express opinions — vital questions that are commonplace and elementary. She ends with the facts of where she was born and where she now resides, and her dancing body suggests where she is most at home.
