CNN —A 26-year-old British man has died after falling from Spain’s tallest bridge during an attempt to climb one of its pylons. Local councillor Macarena Muñoz said he was accompanied by another British man, aged 24. “According to what we have been able to find out they had come to Talavera to climb the bridge and create content for social media,” Muñoz said in the statement. The British man is far from the first person to die in the pursuit of social media content in recent years. And in November 2019 a French tourist died after falling from a waterfall in Thailand while attempting to take a selfie.

CNN —Ukrainian journalist Victoria Roshchyna, who went missing in an occupied part of her country, died in Russian detention last month, Ukrainian authorities said earlier this week. “I have official documentation from the Russian side confirming the death of Ukrainian journalist Victoria Roshchyna, who was illegally deprived of her liberty by Russia,” Ukraine’s human rights commissioner, Dmytro Lubinets, said in a statement. Journalist Evgeniya Motorevskaya, who worked with Roshchyna as the former editor of Hromadske, a Ukrainian media outlet, said the young reporter was determined to do her job as best as she could. The Ukrainian government says thousands of Ukrainians have been held in arbitrary detention in Russia. Yatsenko said that according to Russian authorities, Roshchyna died while being transferred from a detention facility in the southern Russian city of Taganrog to Moscow.

FORT MYERS BEACH, Fla. — Christal Shola was one of dozens of people in a long stream of cars waiting to re-enter Fort Myers Beach on Thursday a few hours after Hurricane Milton slammed into the town. Local and federal officials have praised residents for taking evacuation warnings seriously and leaving at-risk communities, including the barrier islands, long before the storm hit. “I really want to thank the residents of the barrier islands for listening to us this time,” Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri said. Other barrier islands remain inaccessible or have limited services for residents.

Hong Kong CNN —Glance up while strolling through parts of downtown Hong Kong and, chances are, you’ll notice the glassy black lens of a surveillance camera trained on the city’s crowded streets. Hong Kong police had previously set a target of installing 2,000 new surveillance cameras this year, and potentially more than that each subsequent year. Facial recognition gates at the departure hall of Hong Kong International Airport. Tang and the Hong Kong police have repeatedly pointed to other jurisdictions, including Western democracies, that also make wide use of surveillance cameras for law enforcement. Protesters on the streets covered their faces with masks and goggles to prevent identification, at times smashing or covering security cameras.
