The US military is increasingly realizing that drones are a substantial problem it's going to need an answer for. The fact sheet, which offers limited insight into the classified counter-drone strategy, sketches out five steps that the US will take to tackle the drone problem in the near, mid, and long term. The new counter-drone strategy builds upon a range of existing initiatives to not only boost US drone capabilities but also strengthen defenses. LONDON — The world is entering a “third nuclear age,” the head of the British armed forces has warned, with world-ending weapons once again spreading globally and international agreements to control them collapsing. He also cited China’s rapid development to become the world’s second fully-fledged nuclear competitor to the United States, alongside Russia. Global power is shifting and a third nuclear age is upon us,” Radakin said. Last year, Russia suspended its participation from New START, an agreement that sought to put verifiable limits on Washington’s and Moscow’s nuclear arsenals. And in 2019, then-President Donald Trump withdrew from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces, or INF, Treaty, accusing Russia of violating the agreement.

SpaceX's Starlink system has been linked to Ukraine since terminals arrived there shortly after Russian troops invaded the neighboring country in early 2022. The following year, the Pentagon agreed to purchase Starlink satellite internet terminals for use in Ukraine's ongoing defense against Russia. However, in September 2023, Americans of Ukrainian descent rebuked the SpaceX CEO after it emerged that he had thwarted a major attack on the Russian navy. The UCCA isn't the only group concerned about Musk's relationship with the Kremlin. Pierre Vandier told Defense News they will monitor and protect critical underwater infrastructure. NATO is planning to roll out a fleet of uncrewed naval ships to protect critical underwater infrastructure. The development comes after several incidents of critical underwater infrastructure being damaged or severed over the last three years, with Russia sometimes suspected of being behind it. NATO has since taken steps to strengthen the resilience of critical infrastructure and prepare for any disruptions. It created a NATO-EU task force on the resilience of critical infrastructure in January 2023, established an infrastructure coordination cell in February 2023 to map vulnerabilities, and set up the Maritime Center for Security of Critical Undersea Infrastructure this May.

AdvertisementNovember saw Russia hit a new daily average high for its casualties in the war, per the UK MOD. It was the third month in a row that Russia suffered record-breaking daily losses, it said. November saw Russia suffer a record daily average for the number of soldiers injured or killed since it launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, according to UK intelligence. Citing the Ukrainian General Staff, it said that Russia suffered 45,680 casualties in November, up from 41,980 in October, with a daily average of 1,523. The losses likely made it the most costly month of the war for Russia in terms of personnel, it said.

London CNN —The world is at the brink of a third nuclear age, the head of the United Kingdom’s armed forces warned. “The world has changed,” Admiral Sir Tony Radakin said in a lecture on Wednesday at the UK’s Royal United Services Institute. “Global power is shifting, and a third nuclear age is upon us.”This age, he warned, is “altogether more complex” than those that came before it. The first of these ages was the Cold War, Radakin said, while the second was defined by disarmament efforts. The third group is made up of countries “hedging and ducking between the two for maximum advantage,” Radakin said.

Biden’s senior aides inside the White House have been deliberating for weeks about the possibility of issuing preemptive pardons, according to the sources familiar with the discussions. One former senior White House official said aides inside the White House and across various federal agencies are intensely worried about the possibility that the incoming Trump administration will prosecute anyone deemed as having antagonized the president-elect. “Why not do it?”A White House spokesperson declined to comment. The former White House official who spoke to CNN, who is intimately familiar with the workings of the White House counsel’s office, said it would be typical for Siskel and his team to first put together a detailed memo to be presented to Biden. “It’s just such a different use of the pardon power,” said Neil Eggleston, former White House counsel to President Barack Obama.

Since the early stages of Syria's bloody civil war that began in 2011, Iran has supported Syria's strongman president, Bashar Assad. Advancing in the face of Russian and Syrian airstrikes, they overran Syria's fourth-largest city, Hama, on Thursday. Earlier in the Syrian conflict, Iran helped orchestrate interventions on Assad's side by its powerful Lebanese proxy Hezbollah in 2013, and Russia in 2015. While Iran will undoubtedly remain committed to supporting Assad, it's unlikely to prove capable of organizing a 2016-style counteroffensive to recapture Aleppo. Century's Lund recalled that the last time Iran intervened to help Assad recapture Aleppo, it did so in close collaboration with Russia.

President Joe Biden’s decision to pardon his son Hunter has earned plenty of criticism — and most of it, even the harsh partisan-tinged kind of criticism, has real merit. In hindsight, it turns out Joe Biden had a big vulnerability with his family when it came to serving as president. A word of warning to Democrats pulling a muscle trying to defend Biden’s decision here. I get the sense that many Democrats feel duty-bound to somehow defend Biden’s decision here even if they can’t defend it. This slope is very slippery, and it’s why it’s hard not to ask whether we are witnessing the Trumpification of Joe Biden.

Now, a new facet from South Korea is poised to make a splash in investors' portfolios — defense stocks. Sang Hun Seok, who is an Indo-Pacific visiting fellow at the Royal United Services Institute, a U.K.-based policy think tank, explained to CNBC that a steady increase in global expenditure, combined with growing geopolitical uncertainties has provided South Korean arms makers with larger global markets. Chosun Ilbo said that just four countries were importing South Korean arms in 2022, but this number rose to 12 in 2023. The appetite for South Korean arms can be explained by the mantra of "cheaper, better, faster." RUSI's Seok said simply: "South Korean exports are highly cost-efficient."

That’s an unnerving reality for the United States military, which has nearly 30,000 troops and its largest overseas base in South Korea, serving as a check against a belligerent North Korea and counterweight to an aggressive China in a strategically critical region. ‘Major ramifications’The US-South Korea alliance has long been seen by both countries as a cornerstone of peace in the region, where North Korea continues to threaten South Korea and the US with its illegal weapons program. “Any instability in South Korea has major ramifications for our Indo-Pacific policies,” retired US Col. Cedric Leighton told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer, pointing to how US troops in the country are geared for a “fight tonight” scenario against North Korea. “We should not be surprised if Pyongyang exploits the domestic crisis in South Korea to its advantage, either rhetorically or otherwise,” he said. CNN —French lawmakers will vote Wednesday on a no-confidence motion that is widely expected to oust the government of Prime Minister Michel Barnier, as the country grapples with a deepening political crisis and massive budget deficit. No government has been ousted in a no-confidence vote since 1962 and Barnier would become France’s shortest-serving prime minister in history. But it’s unclear how any future prime minister will find unified support in a divided political landscape and avoid being similarly toppled. This gridlock has made the government’s budget problems much harder to solve. The credit rating agency expects France’s budget deficit to reach 6.2% of GDP by the end of the year.

CNN —UK and US authorities on Wednesday announced a major crackdown on a pair of billion-dollar money laundering rings that officials say has cleaned money for Russia’s elite, cybercriminals and drug-runners around the world. The two alleged money-laundering networks offered Russian elites a financial lifeline, UK investigators allege. The Treasury Department on Wednesday announced sanctions on alleged senior leaders of one of the laundering rings, which is known as TGR. Pullman Global Solutions LLC, a Wyoming based entity owned by Bradens, was also sanctioned, Treasury said. NCA officials allege that the Kremlin has directly benefited from some of the money laundering, which the officials say has been used to fund Russian espionage operations.
