They have also considered the impact of potential tariffs proposed by former President Donald Trump. Some on Wall Street view a Harris win as a potential obstacle for antitrust and megacap technology stocks. "Regulatory scrutiny will probably help a lot of M & A activity under Trump — Harris, it'll be a little more of the status quo," said Jay Woods, chief global strategist at Freedom Capital Markets. This could "slow the pace of the AI revolution," he said in a recent post to X that also called a Harris win "more bullish" for the industry. Some investors also view Tesla as a likely winner under a Trump administration, given CEO Elon Musk's close ties to the former president.

The 2024 election cycle has been a brutal assault on our text message inbox. But whatever that outcome is, one thing will unify both sides: Those awful campaign text messages will finally stop. If you, too, have felt bombarded with political texts, you're not alone. Katie Notopoulos / Business InsiderWhat the political text rules sayThe Federal Trade Commission makes rules around robocalls and robotexts: They're exempt from the federal "Do Not Call" list, but there are other rules they have to follow — political messages sent by an autodialer require "the called party's express consent." But messages sent manually don't require an opt-in, so that's why you get so many messages saying, "Hi, Katie!

Kevin Lamarque | ReutersTensions are likely running high in Kyiv ahead of Tuesday's presidential election in the U.S. — a vote that could make or break ongoing aid for Ukraine. Officials in Kyiv say the election is being watched closely, amid concerns that future aid could be cut. The ETF industry is gearing up for some potentially seismic changes in 2025 and beyond. Policy changes from the SEC are hard to predict, but the ETF industry appears to sense an opening to push new types of products. Private credit funds One big area of focus for the ETF industry is how to tap into the private credit boom that has become a key part of the U.S. financial system. Fund issuers will need the SEC to bless new types of constructions in order to get a private credit fund approved. "For the most part, private credit is an investment that is limited to sophisticated investors and not retail investors," said Brian Murphy, a partner at law firm Stradley Ronon.

Kyoyo, Japan Reuters —The world’s first wooden satellite, built by Japanese researchers, was launched into space on Tuesday, in an early test of using timber in lunar and Mars exploration. An engineering model of LignoSat, pictured at Kyoto University ahead of Tuesday's launch. “Early 1900s airplanes were made of wood,” said Kyoto University forest science professor Koji Murata. “A wooden satellite should be feasible, too.”Wood is more durable in space than on Earth because there’s no water or oxygen that would rot or inflame it, Murata added. A wooden satellite also minimizes the environmental impact at the end of its life, the researchers say.

With Election Day upon us, many investors are wondering how to, or if they even should, position their stock portfolios ahead of knowing who the next president will be. Indecision will hurt the stock market, not destroy it, but bruise it because the only thing markets really hate is uncertainty." Jim also wrote Sunday that the stock market will more than likely be just fine no matter who wins the presidency. Bottom line A quick and decisive presidential election outcome — one way or the other — is what's best for the stock market. Former President Donald Trump's campaign spent the final Sunday of the 2024 election on all-too-familiar turf: responding to the reaction to the candidate. Just hours earlier, Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic nominee, made a very traditional — and politically safe — appearance on NBC's "Saturday Night Live." Trump campaign aides did not respond to a request for comment. Rob Godfrey, a South Carolina-based Republican strategist, said Trump has handed Harris gifts by playing into her strategy. Last week, Democrats had to perform clean-up duty on a surrogate who has largely been absent from her campaign: President Joe Biden appeared to say Trump's supporters are "garbage."

European markets are expected to start the week on a mostly positive note Monday, with all eyes on Tuesday's presidential election in the U.S. Earnings are set to come from BioNTech and Ryanair and data releases include European manufacturing purchasing managers' index data. Global market aftershocks may hinge heavily on which party takes control of Congress as a result of the vote. If control of the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate is divided, it would likely mean a maintaining of the status quo. Asia-Pacific markets rose Monday, while U.S. stock futures were mixed in overnight trading Sunday.

Stock futures were little changed in overnight trading ahead of Tuesday's high-stakes U.S. presidential electionFutures tied to the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 20 points. S&P 500 futures and Nasdaq-100 futures inched about 0.1% higher. The latest poll from NBC News suggests the race is "neck and neck" between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris. The results could heavily affect where stocks end the year, but investors may want to brace for some near-term choppiness. Traders are pricing in 98% odds of a quarter-point cut following September's half-point reduction, according to CME Group's FedWatch Tool.

Warren Buffett signaled in Berkshire Hathaway's third-quarter earnings that he was being cautious. The investor built a record cash pile, slashed his two biggest stock bets, and halted buybacks. The legendary investor and his team sold $36 billion of shares and only made purchases worth $1.5 billion, marking their eighth straight quarter as net sellers. Market analysts predicted choppy trading and sharp swings going into the US presidential election. AdvertisementMarket analysts are braced for volatility ahead of Tuesday's presidential election as traders shuffled their bets on a Donald Trump or Kamala Harris victory. The drivers of market performance — economic growth, corporate earnings, and innovation — ultimately outshine the impact of political changes. The Trump trade is a stronger dollar, weaker bonds/ higher bond yields and stronger crypto. With one day left of this campaign, the dollar is falling, and the dollar index is at a two-week low.

Here's how Bank of America suggests trading a variety of Election Day outcomes. Split Republican control A Trump White House with a largely Democratic Congress is overall neutral for equities, Kwon said. Split Democratic control The status quo would be maintained with a Harris White House and a Republican Congress, Kwon said. Over the past seven election cycles, the two-week price direction for stocks was identical to one day after election day every single time.
