CNN —For many of the 170 million TikTok users in the United States, Wednesday’s vote in the House of Representatives to effectively ban the social media platform is worrisome. That’s just one reason why it’s laughable to hear China’s foreign ministry claim that the TikTok bill would disrupt market operations and undermine investor confidence. Most of the world’s most popular social media apps, incidentally, are banned in China unless they — or their user data — are locally based and thus easily overseen by the government. She has had multiple meetings with legislators and has spoken with Trump about protecting TikTok, according to the Washington Post. The government needs to develop oversight rules for all social media.

NEW YORK (AP) — An attorney for a longtime advice columnist who won an $83.3 million defamation award against Donald Trump suggested Monday that a new defamation lawsuit was possible against the ex-president after he resumed verbal attacks against her at a weekend rally. “As we said after the last jury verdict, we continue to monitor every statement that Donald Trump makes about our client, E. Jean Carroll,” Kaplan said. Photos You Should See View All 60 Images“This woman is not a believable person,” Trump said Saturday. The trial judge instructed the jury that it was only to determine what damages, if any, Trump owed as a result of his 2019 statements. That jury, in awarding Carroll $5 million, also found that Trump defamed her with statements made in October 2022.

Three days after Donald J. Trump posted a $91.6 million bond in the defamation case he lost recently to the writer E. Jean Carroll, her lawyer on Monday suggested she was considering filing yet another defamation lawsuit against the former president. The lawyer raised the prospect of a new lawsuit after Mr. Trump in recent days repeatedly lashed out at Ms. Carroll, using the same kind of disparaging language that led to the huge judgment against him in January. “The statute of limitations for defamation in most jurisdictions is between one and three years,” Roberta A. Kaplan, Ms. Carroll’s lawyer, said in a statement Monday morning. “As we said after the last jury verdict, we continue to monitor every statement that Donald Trump makes about our client.”In a separate court filing, Ms. Kaplan told the federal judge overseeing the case that she and Mr. Trump’s lawyers had reached an agreement on the details of his proposed $91.6 million bond. The bond — provided by Federal Insurance Company, an arm of the insurance giant Chubb — will prevent Ms. Carroll from collecting her multi-million-dollar judgment while Mr. Trump appeals the defamation verdict.

To the Editor:Re “Trump and Biden Pile Up Victories on Super Tuesday” (front page, March 6):I listened to Donald Trump’s Super Tuesday victory speech that he gave from Mar-a-Lago. True to form, the former president laced his comments with old grievances and false statements. This won’t be the last time Donald Trump makes false statements about the 2020 election results specifically or the 2024 results generally. For Mr. Trump, the border is a familiar backdrop and represents almost the background music of his candidacy, as he warns of a nation slipping out of reach and an “invasion” he promises to stop. For Mr. Biden, immigration represents a top vulnerability as border crossings reached record highs in late 2023 and images of mass migration and its fallout have become fixtures on the news. In the fall of 2020, Mr. Trump was more trusted on immigration by a sizable 16 percentage points, according to NBC News polling at the time. That margin has more than doubled to 35 percentage points as of this January — the largest advantage either Mr. Biden or Mr. Trump had on any of the nine issues tested. The package would have made asylum claims more difficult, expanded detention capacity, increased fentanyl screening and paid for more border officers.

Vice President Kamala Harris went to the U.S.-Mexico border soon after she and President Biden took office, even though she had characterized such visits as empty politics just weeks before. President Barack Obama also toured the border during his time in the White House, though he came to see the trips as little more than photo ops. As the immigration debate grows increasingly polarized, a trip along the 2,000-mile frontier has become a compulsory bit of political theater for leaders who want to show they care about immigration. The imagery at the border — the wall, the Border Patrol officers, the crowded detention facilities — serves as a potent backdrop for drawing attention to the crisis or, increasingly, for seizing on the issue to attack political opponents. On Thursday, both of those factors will be at play when President Biden and Mr. Trump make dueling trips to the U.S.-Mexico border.

CNN —The South Carolina Republican presidential primary is usually the most important contest of the nominating season. Since 1980, the only Republican to win the nomination without winning South Carolina was Mitt Romney in 2012. While Haley is unlikely to take South Carolina, she is definitely outperforming her national baseline. Both counties have relatively high levels of college graduates, who have been most hostile to the former president in GOP primaries historically. Trump winning college graduates in the South Carolina primary would match what we’re seeing in national polling of the Republican electorate.

It’s first worth noting which countries have most dramatically increased their defense spending since the invasion of Ukraine. Yves Herman/ReutersTrump’s well-documented comments about NATO and European defense spending woke them up from that slumber. The example many point to is a deal struck earlier this year between multiple European countries to buy 1,000 Patriot missiles. “Pensions for soldiers are useful, sure, but they are not going to shoot a Russian,” a European security official told CNN. CNN —Former President Donald Trump made his final pitch Thursday to the Supreme Court in his effort to pause a trial over the election subversion charges brought by special counsel Jack Smith. “There are overwhelming reasons why the case should not go to trial ‘in three months or less,’” Trump told the Supreme Court in a 16-page filing. The Supreme Court is expected to decide on Trump’s request within a few days. On Monday, Trump asked the Supreme Court to block a unanimous decision from the DC Circuit handed down last week that rejected his claims of immunity from the election subversion charges. “Without immunity from criminal prosecution, the presidency as we know it will cease to exist,” Trump told the Supreme Court.

Now, without naming Trump, McConnell says he will support the Republican Party's eventual nominee for president, though it's clear the two have a deteriorated relationship. First-term Republican Rep. Donald Trump filed a final brief to the Supreme Court ahead of arguments in his Colorado ballot case. Attorneys for Trump this week made a last push to convince the top court to keep him on the ballot. The Supreme Court is set to hear arguments in the case beginning on Thursday after agreeing to take up Trump's appeal. Advertisement"There was no 'insurrection,' President Trump did not 'incite' anything, and President Trump did not 'engage in' anything that constitutes 'insurrection,'" lawyers for the former president argued Monday. The Colorado Supreme Court, however, overturned that judge's ruling and proceeded to ban him from the ballot.

Remember I used to say: ‘Don’t do it, but if you do it, keep the oil.’”Facts First: Trump’s claim that he said “Don’t do it” is false; the claim was debunked eight years ago. In reality, Trump did not publicly express opposition to the March 2003 invasion of Iraq before it occurred. In his 2000 book, “The America We Deserve,” Trump argued a military strike on Iraq might be necessary; when radio host Howard Stern asked Trump in September 2002 whether he is “for invading Iraq,” Trump responded, “Yeah, I guess so. Trump claimed on Fox, as he has before, that Iran “called me” to let him know of its plan to deliberately miss. Trump has provided no substantiation for the claim that Iran called him to telegraph the strike and offer reassurance.

CNN —Former President Donald Trump made several false claims in a speech Tuesday night after CNN and other media outlets projected that he would win the Republican presidential primary in New Hampshire. At the first two debates, Mr. DeSantis played the front-runner, attacking his opponents only when he was hit first. This has not been an easy stretch for Mr. DeSantis, in no small part because of the attacks from Mr. Trump on everything from his foreign policy credentials to his height. Mr. DeSantis has staked his bid on his performance in the state’s first-in-the-nation caucuses on Jan. 15. Mr. DeSantis offered a similar criticism of the president while campaigning in New Hampshire in October. Unless Mr. Trump makes a dramatic last-minute appearance on the stage, that seems unlikely to change.

The decision comes just days before a trial on Trump's eligibility for the ballot is expected to begin. In a 24-page ruling, Colorado District Judge Sarah Wallace pushed back on Trump's argument that Congress, not courts, should handle questions related to his ballot eligibility. She also sided against Trump's claim that state election officials lack the power to enforce Section 3 of the 14th Amendment. Wallace's ruling Wednesday comes after Chief U.S. District Judge Philip A. Brimmer denied Trump's request to move the Colorado ballot case to federal court. REUTERS/Mike Segar/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsWASHINGTON, Oct 24 (Reuters) - Donald Trump stepped up his bid to have criminal charges against him over efforts to overturn his 2020 U.S. presidential election loss dropped, filing a flurry of motions overnight seeking again to have the federal case dismissed. The three filings submitted late on Monday follow the Republican former president's attempt earlier this month seeking to dismiss the case citing presidential immunity, a claim U.S. prosecutors rebutted last week. Trump, who is the frontrunner for the Republican presidential nomination, had sought to delay the federal trial in Washington, currently due to begin in March, until after the November 2024 election. Representatives for the U.S. special counsel's office declined to comment but have until Nov. 6 to file their response with the court. "Because the Government has not charged President Trump with responsibility for the actions at the Capitol on January 6, 2021, allegations related to these actions are not relevant and are prejudicial and inflammatory," they wrote.
