This accounting of the roles Trump’s family members will play in his second administration is based on conversations with 10 people familiar with the dynamics. “Susie ran the best of his three campaigns, and she’ll run the best White House that he’s had,” the former senior Trump White House official said. Now, the president-elect calls Kushner periodically to get his opinion on some potential hires, the former senior White House official said. CNN —President-elect Donald Trump has asked a court to dismiss the criminal case against him related to efforts to overturn the 2020 election results in Georgia. “A sitting president is completely immune from indictment or any criminal process, state or federal,” Trump’s attorney Steve Sadow wrote in the filing. “Any ongoing criminal proceeding against a sitting president must be dismissed under the U.S. Constitution,” Sadow added in a statement. He noted that two federal criminal cases against Trump – over 2020 election interference and his handling of classified information – have already been dropped by the Justice Department. The Georgia Court of Appeals is considering whether Willis should be allowed to stay on the case, and is expected to issue a ruling by the spring.

Chief among the picks is Paul Atkins, whom Trump intends to nominate to lead the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), which regulates cryptocurrency. Atkins, a crypto advocate and former SEC commissioner, is expected to regulate cryptocurrency with a lighter touch than Gary Gensler, who leads the commission under the Biden administration. Bitcoin touched $100,000 just hours after Atkins was announced as Trump’s choice for SEC chair. Bitcoin is up 130% for the year so far, with the post-election rally accounting for a significant portion of its gains. That month, he also purchased burgers from a Manhattan bar frequented by crypto enthusiasts using bitcoin.

And he declared the US as “all-in on Africa” as he finally made good on a two-year promise to visit sub-Saharan Africa. While on the trip, Biden did not substantively weigh in on the matter, only briefly telling reporters he would receive a briefing on the situation involving a key US ally. Biden announced that the US will invest an additional $560 million for projects along the Lobito corridor, from continued infrastructure upgrades to helping build mobile networks. “The United States understands how we invest in Africa is as important as how much we invest,” Biden said Tuesday. But the Biden administration is hoping the investments the US is making now will pay off for the people of Africa in the years to come.

In 2024, the polls conducted in the last two weeks understated his support by 2.4 points on average. First, it’s possible that the polls — once again — failed to capture enough new voters or voters who changed their votes from backing Biden in 2020 to backing Trump in 2024. This is a statistical correction that pollster used this cycle to address the previous undercount of Trump voters. Properly understood, pre-election polls can play an important role in democracy by providing a sense of what outcomes seem possible. Instead, we should consider how we can use pre-election polls in ways that convey the electoral possibilities at play and better describe the uncertainties involved.

Republican presidential nominee and former U.S. President Donald Trump attends a campaign rally in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, U.S., October 30, 2024. President-elect Donald Trump's transition team said Tuesday that it reached an agreement with the Department of Justice that sets the stage for the department to conduct background checks and start the security clearance process for Trump administration nominees and appointees. The Trump transition team said its memorandum of understanding with the DOJ "allows the transition team to submit names for background checks and security clearances." Democratic senators have been especially insistent that background checks are needed for all of Trump's nominees before they can be considered for confirmation by the Senate. "It's really appropriate, though, to have FBI background checks" to help illuminate the allegations against Hegseth, Fetterman said.

President-elect Donald Trump was wavering in recent days between two candidates to replace FBI Director Christopher Wray: Kash Patel and Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey, sources told CNN. Trump interviewed both Bailey and Patel at his Mar-a-Lago home earlier this month, and regularly talked to them by phone as he weighed his decision. “It came down to a matter of what Trump wants and what he was looking for in terms of an FBI director. And Bailey didn’t fit that mold, he didn’t have the personality,” one Trump adviser involved in the conversations told CNN. As of late last week, some close to Trump believed it was a “toss up” between Patel and Bailey as to who the president-elect would pick, according to a source familiar with the discussions.

Gavin Newsom's special legislative session to safeguard California from potential "federal overreach" from the incoming Trump administration begins Monday, teeing up a potential battle between the president-elect and the most-populous U.S. state. The fund would be for the California Department of Justice and other state agencies to be used for court challenges and administrative actions. "President Trump received the most votes for a Republican presidential candidate in the deep blue state of California since 2004," Leavitt said. In a conversation with volunteers after the election, Newsom said the state needed to be ready for action as the next administration takes hold. "I think there's a lot of onus that's placed upon California because [of] the size, scale and scope of this state," he said at the time.

Who is Kash Patel, Trump’s pick for FBI director?

CNN —Kash Patel, Donald Trump’s pick to lead the FBI and an ardent supporter of the president-elect, has vowed to help dismantle the same organization he’s poised to lead. The FBI director must also be confirmed by the Senate, where members are already bracing for how they’ll navigate a slew of unorthodox Trump selections. As of late last week, some close to Trump believed it was a “toss-up” between Patel and Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey as to whom the president-elect would pick for FBI director, according to a source familiar with the discussions. Trump briefly floated Patel as a potential replacement for then-CIA Director Gina Haspel, whom he had considered firing after the 2020 election. Patel was also put in charge of the Pentagon transition effort for Trump’s first term, overseeing coordination with the incoming Biden-Harris administration.

As soon as the invitation was received, Trump told his team he wanted to attend as he has long held a fascination with Notre Dame, which was severely damaged by a fire in 2019. At the time, Trump had watched footage of the fire burning while aboard Air Force One, commenting on social media: “So horrible to watch the massive fire at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. Some Hispanic men are defining college differently. “Latino men are checking out because they are the labor force for a lot of these jobs that require manual labor and blue-collar workers,” Ponjuán said. Hispanic men work in some of the most dangerous jobs, mostly in transportation and construction, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Like Garza, some Hispanic men are using their blue-collar skills to start their own contracting, landscaping, restaurant and other businesses. But one of this year’s election takeaways is that those gains weren’t enough to overcome frustrations, especially among Latino men, about high costs and the impact on their families.

CNN —Donald Trump has selected billionaire Massad Boulos to serve as his senior adviser on Arab and Middle Eastern affairs — the second time in as many days the president-elect has chosen a family member for a key post. On Saturday, Trump named real estate developer Charles Kushner to serve as the next US ambassador to France. Trump has long turned to his family members to serve in political roles, raising questions about conflicts of interest and nepotism. Donald Trump’s sons Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump ran the family real estate business during his first term but emerged as key surrogates on the 2024 campaign trail. The appointments raise questions about influence and power — and profit — among Trump’s family members in the US government.
