Silicon Valley, long considered a progressive stronghold, has begun to shift toward Donald Trump, according to new voting data analyzed by Business Insider. These numbers show that Trump and Republicans are still a long way off from gaining any real majorities in Silicon Valley. While Elon Musk is based in Texas these days, many of his companies, including Tesla, are still very active in Silicon Valley. Trump, with Musk in support, has promised to cut regulations, which could help Silicon Valley startups grow more quickly. The trend toward Trump in the Silicon Valley electorate mirrors statewide and national trends.

While richer people are expanding their footprint in the holiday travel mix, lower-paid ones are shrinking theirs: Households making under $50,000 are set to make up just 23% of travelers, down from 28% a year ago, Deloitte found. Indeed, the luxury travel network Virtuoso said it’s seen seasonal bookings surge 37% since last year among its high-end clientele. Some 64% of Americans plan to take more than one trip this holiday season, Deloitte found, up from 57% in 2023. “These travel choices may suggest that people are looking to save money, likely choosing cheaper options to keep their travel costs down,” the researchers wrote. Ted Rossman, senior industry analyst for Bankrate, said there are signs that “inflation continues to strain holiday travelers in a big way.” The consumer finance company found 86% of households making less than $100,000 annually expect to change their holiday travel plans due to cost increases (although a hefty 77% of six-figure earners said the same).

As a result, passive funds have attracted more annual investor money than active funds for the past nine years, according to Morningstar. watch nowBut, for investors who prefer active management — especially in more niche corners of the investment market — active ETFs often have a cost advantage versus active mutual funds, experts said. CNN —The Federal Reserve’s favored inflation gauge just moved in the wrong direction. The Personal Consumption Expenditures price index rose 2.3% in October from the year before, accelerating from the 2.1% pace notched in September, according to Commerce Department data released Wednesday. On a monthly basis, prices rose 0.2%, matching the gain seen in September. Inflation within the services sector drove much of the monthly increase, as those prices rose 0.4% from September, while goods prices ticked up by 0.1%. Wednesday’s inflation readings were exactly what economists had anticipated: Consensus estimates called for a 0.2% monthly increase and for the annual rate to climb to 2.3%, according to FactSet.

For the past year, comparing short-term CD rates vs. long-term CD rates showed that short-term CDs had better rates overall. Even the best long-term CD rates were starting to dip under the 4% mark, going into the 3.90% APY range. For example, Synchrony Bank's best CD rate is the Synchrony 9 Month CD, which offers 4.05% APY. Long-term CD rates are still lower than short-term CD rates overall. If the risk of incurring early withdrawal penalties in a long-term CD is too much, you can open a CD ladder with a long-term CD in it to mitigate that risk.

Does the United States Have an Infertility Crisis?
  + stars: | 2024-11-26 | by ( Dani Blum | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
It’s become a popular talking point among some of President-elect Trump’s most prominent supporters: America has an infertility problem. “Why are so many couples infertile?” Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Mr. Trump’s nominee to lead the Department of Health and Human Services, asked in a September post on the social media site X. Dr. Casey Means, a former surgeon and health influencer who has advised Mr. Kennedy, has called infertility a “crisis.”And Mr. Trump himself has said he would task Mr. Kennedy with investigating “the decades-long increase in chronic health problems,” including infertility, or the medical inability to conceive. Like people in many other developed regions across the globe, Americans are having fewer children now than before — a demographic trend that has alarmed some conservatives in particular. Some of that is likely a result of social and economic factors, like steep child care costs, housing prices and more people choosing to forgo starting families.

‘Demure’ is Dictionary.com’s 2024 word of the year
  + stars: | 2024-11-26 | by ( Karina Tsui | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +4 min
CNN —“Demure,” a word that went viral over the summer, has been named Dictionary.com’s 2024 word of the year — beating out other contenders like “brainrot,” “brat,” and “weird.”In an announcement Monday, the site said that the word experienced a “meteoric rise in usage” in 2024 — up 1,200% between January and August — a spike that was largely attributed to TikToker and beauty influencer Jools Lebron’s popularization of the phrase “very demure, very mindful” in a series of satirical videos that shook the internet. “That’s the joke!”The satire is clearest in a clip in which the TikTok star asserts that she’s going to behave in a demure, mindful way while going out on the Las Vegas Strip. I don’t dog-ear pages, I put in a bookmark,” RuPaul said in a video promoting online bookstore Allstora. Lebron, who is transgender, said that the fame from her “demure” videos has helped her finance the rest of her transition. “Brat,” another word that has taken on new meaning in 2024, was named Collins Dictionary’s word of 2024 for being one of the most talked about words on and offline.

OLED has shown strong support at the 160 level, with the stock rebounding from this area, reinforcing the bullish case. This luxury is set to be taken to new heights on British Airways superjumbos, as the airline just unveiled a fresh design for its first class airplane seat, set to launch on BA’s A380 planes in 2026. CNN Travel was among the first to try out British Airways’ new cabin product during an unveiling at the airline’s London headquarters. British Airways suggests the wardrobe eliminates the need for overhead storage, which (perhaps controversially) won’t be a component of these new first class cabins. Each first class seat also features a 32-inch 4K inflight personal entertainment screen and adjustable mood lighting, including a “cinema” mode. Future of first classWhile British Airways is investing in its premium cabins, some airlines are moving away from first class.

A record 31 million passengers are expected to fly US airlines over the course of this week, according to Airlines for America, the industry trade group. And while many airlines have increased the available number of flights and seats, those capacity increases have not kept pace with demand. With some of the busiest months yet to come, a new record for the percentage of seats airlines’ filled is within reach. Airlines are signaling prices will probably go higher as some of the lower-fare airlines struggled with ongoing losses and sharply reduced their capacity. But critics of the airlines say troubles at the lower fare airlines aren’t solely to blame for higher fares.

With former high-flying gambling stocks struggling so far in the fourth quarter, it's tempting to write off the entire group. MGM is only up about 10% since the August market low, and CZR is slightly above the S & P 500 in terms of performance. Over the same period, we can see that DraftKings Inc (DKNG) is up around 35%, doubling the return of the S & P 500. FLUT has now made a new 12-month relative high, as the strong performance in Q4 has outpaced other gambling stocks as well as the major equity benchmarks.
