CNN —Violence is intensifying in Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince, this week, which saw a United Nations helicopter hit by gunfire and two gangs apparently target US embassy vehicles. Thursday’s helicopter shooting will “likely” cause US airlines to halt their operations once again in Port-au-Prince, the second source told CNN. Last March, major US carriers like Spirit, JetBlue, and American Airlines suspended their operations at Port-au-Prince’s international airport for nearly three months after a sudden spike in gang violence. Gang violence in Haiti has spiraled in recent years, with attacks becoming more brazen and violent. Members of the “Gran Grif” gang used automatic rifles to kill at least 70 people in an attack that displaced 6,000 people, said a UN agency at the time.

The U.S. Transportation Department announced a $50 million fine Wednesday against American Airlines over allegations it mistreated passengers with disabilities, which the department said in some cases caused injuries. “They repeatedly failed to provide prompt wheelchair assistance, and they damaged thousands of passengers’ wheelchairs, which left passengers without the device they need to live their life fully,” he said. American Airlines may not be alone in violations of laws that protect travelers with disabilities. Buttigieg said there are investigations into other airlines, although he said that “American Airlines appear to be one of the worst offenders.”“The problems that we have uncovered in our investigation are not confined to one airline,” Buttigieg said. American said last year that it transported more than 146,000 wheelchairs and other mobility devices.

The family was shocked and disappointed by the coddling of kids when they returned to the US. She was featured in "The Danish Secret to Happy Kids," a new book that champions Nordic parenting. It was a complete 180 from our experience in Denmark, where the kids understood to be careful. The children set the table and helped themselves from a big dish in the middle. But we're grateful we had the chance to raise our children in Denmark — at least for a while.
