ET Aurelien BreedenJohn Yoon andService on three high-speed train lines in France was disrupted on Friday because of arson attacks, the national railway company said, causing travel chaos on the day of the Opening Ceremony of the Olympics in Paris. “A massive attack took place last night to paralyze the high-speed rail network,” the railway company, S.N.C.F., said in a statement. Traffic was “severely disrupted” on three lines where fires had been set: the Atlantic, Northern and Eastern lines, the company said, and many trains had been canceled. The mood was already tense in Paris, where security has been tightening for weeks ahead of Friday night’s Opening Ceremony. The company said that another attack had been thwarted on the line that connects Paris to southeastern France.

PepsiCo says it's two-thirds of the way done with an overhaul of its supply chain. This article is part of "The Future of Supply-Chain Management," a series on companies' manufacturing and distribution strategies. With more automation, workers are doing fewer physical tasks, like driving a forklift, and far more oversight of the machines taking over those tasks. Workers at manufacturing facilities and distribution centers and the unions that represent them often bristle at automation, which can lead to layoffs. Even as it has invested in automation, PepsiCo's total workforce has swelled: It grew by 20%, to 318,000, over the five years that ended in 2023.

Michel Euler/ APThe attacks also add more pressure to concerns over whether Paris' transport infrastructure can manage the Olympic crowds. Officials promised to reinvigorate the transport system after Paris won the Olympic bid. But, in November 2023, the mayor of Paris said there were parts of the city where "transport will not be ready and there will not be enough trains," according to French radio network RFI.

French train services were canceled and delayed on Friday, after the nation's high-speed rail network faced a series of "malicious" acts overnight, including arson, just ahead of the opening of the Olympic Games in Paris. Railways operator SNCF said in a statement that its network had experienced several concurrent attacks on Thursday night, with fire damaging its facilities. The high-speed LGV Atlantique line was hit, along with northern and eastern lines, causing knock-on disruption that the operator expected will impact hundreds of thousands of people. "Following this massive attack aiming to paralyze the high-speed line network, a large number of trains were diverted or canceled," SNCF said, according to a CNBC translation, advising those who are able to not to travel to the station. The impact also hit international Eurostar services, which connect the U.K., France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany.

The economics of the Olympics

“This will be the first Olympics, since Sydney, where the total costs are coming in under $10 billion,” said Victor Matheson, a College of the Holy Cross professor of economics who has researched the financial costs of the Olympics. Workmen adjust banners on the 3x3 basketball venue located at La Concorde, in Paris, ahead of the 2024 Olympic Games. Additionally, the Paris Olympic Village will be converted into offices and housing in a historically impoverished neighborhood. Still, economists say, it may take more drastic moves in the future for the Olympics to be truly sustainable and economically sound. “I love the Olympics, and I love sporting events, but I just really do not think that the way the Olympics works now is a viable business model,” Phalin said.

SNCF said one of the acts was “foiled.”Travel on these lines is “very disrupted,” with the railway network needing to divert and cancel a large number of trains, SNCF said. Passengers gather around the departure boards at the Gare Montparnasse train station in Paris. Eurostar, the high-speed train service that connects the United Kingdom with France, has been forced to cancel and divert trains due to the “coordinated acts of malice,” on French lines. Washington, DC, public transportation services — including trains and buses — begin experiencing delays, according to the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority. At 5:30 a.m., US cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike tells customers that it was “aware of reports of crashes” of its software on Microsoft Windows operating systems, according to a company advisory viewed by CNN. Australian lenders ANZ and Westpac were also impacted, according to Downdetector, a website that tracks cyber outages. Other states also report impacts to their driving services, including Georgia, North Carolina, Texas and Tennessee. CrowdStrike would take steps “to prevent anything like this from happening again,” according to a statement on the company’s website.

Here’s what to know if you’re planning to travel this weekend. David J. Phillip/APUS-based carriers American Airlines, United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Allegiant Airlines, SunCountry and Frontier Airlines all reported issues on Friday. Crews have limits on their working hours, so staffing challenges cascade along with flight delays. That all depends on the type of ticket you have, the airline you’re flying with and whether you have travel insurance (which is always a good idea). If you’re set to travel soon, wherever you are in the world, it’s worth double checking your individual journey status before you travel.

Until Friday morning, many people had either not heard of — or were not thinking about — CrowdStrike. But as flights were canceled, broadcasters went off air, trains did not run and medical procedures were delayed around the world, its name quickly spread around the internet. CrowdStrike, which was founded in 2011, is a cloud-based cybersecurity platform whose software is used by scores of industries around the world to protect against hackers and outside breaches. “Once CrowdStrike is installed, it actively scans for threats on your machine without having to manually run virus scans,” according to an explanation on the University of Denver’s website, which offers the platform to students and staff. Cybersecurity software like CrowdStrike’s has broad privileges to run across a computer system, including into sensitive areas.
