Brisbane, Australia CNN —A pilot who died when he crashed a helicopter into a hotel in Australia had “significant blood alcohol content” during the unauthorized flight, according to an official report into the incident. The pilot had been out with friends at various venues around Cairns and was seen consuming alcohol, according to witnesses and security camera footage, the report said. Cameras also caught the moment he positioned one of Nautilus Aviation’s Robinson R44 Raven II helicopters onto a helipad at Cairns Airport at around 1:30 a.m. local time. The report found they wouldn’t have seen a helicopter that was operating at night with no lights. It found the helicopter wasn’t upright when it hit the hotel, but there was also no sign of mechanical failure.

Elon Musk’s pro-Trump America PAC is offering people $47 if they successfully get one registered swing-state voter to sign a petition supporting the First and Second Amendments of the Constitution. Both Musk and America PAC have vocally encouraged swing-state voter registration ahead of the mandatory deadlines. Over the weekend, X repurposed the account handle “@america,” which used to belong to a different account, for Musk’s America PAC. The account has since promoted the pro-Constitution petition, swing-state voter registration and the $47 offer. Musk’s America PAC was formed in May and has previously stoked controversy with its unusual tactics to encourage swing-state voter registration.

As Apple prepares Apple Intelligence to jump into Silicon Valley’s AI race, it’s relying on one of its strongest advantages: Its army of 34 million app developers. IPhone users will get their first taste of Apple Intelligence, the company’s artificial intelligence system, later this month. The company is relying on Apple Intelligence to be the strongest selling point for the iPhone 16, its latest generation of smartphones. That’s something other company’s AI chatbots cannot currently do, and to accomplish this, Apple is beckoning its army of third-party developers to fine tune their apps to collaborate with Apple Intelligence. Another drawback is that Apple Intelligence features will only be available on the latest iPhones, a small subset of the total iPhone user base.

He says that quiet vacationing made him more productive at work because he was so happy. Over the course of 15 months, I spent a total of 10 weeks quiet vacationing from my fully remote job. I think quiet vacationing may be good for productivity; I was genuinely so happy while traveling the world, and it translated into my productivity at work. On some quiet vacationing days, I had to work a little later to get things across the line, but I became very efficient. A quiet vacation day in Europe might look something like this: Wake up around 8 or 9 a.m. and eat breakfast at the hotel.

In a speech to Congress, also on Tuesday, with López Obrador sitting a few steps from her, the promises seemed more tangible. It is far less than the 2.6 million barrels per day López Obrador promised at the beginning of his term. Experts said Mexico would not be able to increase oil production using traditional methods, because its fields are getting tapped out. In Detroit as in the rest of the U.S., the violent crime rate has dropped and is near historic lows. Last month, new FBI numbers showed that murder declined 11.6% in 2023, the largest single year drop on record. But Trump and his allies have also cherrypicked statistics and falsely told supporters that FBI crime data can’t be believed. Crime data skeptics also have attributed declining crime numbers to “woke prosecutors” who are failing to file charges. But Trump uses these low 2020 and 2021 victim survey numbers, despite the doubts cast on them, to argue that violent crime has spiked significantly during the Biden-Harris administration.

New York CNN —Next month’s presidential election could make America’s hostile media climate even worse for journalists. That’s the takeaway from a new Committee to Protect Journalists report about the state of press freedom in the US. The Committee to Protect Journalists has historically called attention to journalists being arrested and killed in repressive regimes. According to the US Press Freedom Tracker, assaults on journalists in the US have soared by more than 50% in 2024 compared to last year. The Committee to Protect Journalists said the “corrosive political environment” has intensified safety concerns for journalists – forcing newsrooms to conduct safety assessments, evaluate online threats, and hire extra security.

The move, experts say, isn’t based on medical science but instead on ongoing efforts from anti-abortion advocates to restrict access to abortion medications in states with near-total bans, like Louisiana. During a medication abortion, mifepristone is given first, followed by misoprostol one to two days later. According to the new law, it’s not a crime for a patient to possess the medications if they were prescribed to them. Hospitals don’t need to remove misoprostol from hemorrhage carts, the spokesperson added, or hesitate to administer misoprostol to patients experiencing health emergencies. The testimony “illustrated that easy access to these drugs can be dangerous to pregnant women,” Murrill said in the statement.

The Treasury market, though, hasn’t been paying attention. Officials penciled in another 50 basis points in reductions by the end of the year and another 100 by the end of 2025. That sentiment is evident in the “breakeven” inflation rate, or the difference between standard Treasury and Treasury Inflation Protected Securities yields. The 5-year breakeven rate, for instance, has risen 8 basis points since the Fed meeting and is up 20 basis points since Sept. 11. Taken together, the various dynamics in the Treasury market are making it a difficult time for investors.

While parents have used location-tracking apps to keep an eye on their kids since the tech was invented, millennials and Gen Zers are now turning the all-seeing eye onto their parents. The kids who grew up with extra watchful parents are now carefully eyeing their parents' every move. While phones lacked tracking technology when Shafer was younger, her parents set hard limits on which hours she could use her first cellphone and whom she could contact. She described her mom and dad's parenting style as "very typical of overbearing parents, especially immigrant parents." And more parents are tracking their kids in college to help quell their anxiety about the separation.

The scientists had previously documented orcas (Orcinus orca) in the region chasing both dusky dolphins and long-beaked common dolphins (Delphinus capensis). Dusky dolphins measure about 7 feet (2 meters) long and weigh up to 187 pounds (85 kilograms). The Humboldt Current orcas weren’t eating dolphins exclusively; they hunted leatherback sea turtles, South American fur seals and Humboldt penguins, according to the study. But Humboldt Current orcas have a smaller white eye patch than known Type A orcas. A similar interaction was previously documented in Australia between an orca and a diver, but had never been observed in the Humboldt Current.
