Faith Kipyegon on motherhood and the quest for history

Kipyegon and a string of top athletes are continuing to prove that elite sport and motherhood are not incompatible. “[Jamaican sprinter] Shelly Ann Fraser Pryce came back after maternity leave, and [US runner] Allison Felix, and we met in Tokyo at the 2021 Olympic Games,” she recalls. At those Games, Felix won a gold and a bronze and Fraser-Pryce won silver to become the most decorated 100m sprinter in Olympic history. Courtesy NN Running TeamThe Kenyan's training regime for the Paris Games has been intense, and partially under the mentorship of men's marathon legend Eliud Kipchoge. “Going to Paris and remembering the history I’ve talked about and getting that gold medal, it’ll be a huge history for me,” she says.

No nation officially wins the Olympics, but that doesn’t stop journalists and others from trying to keep score by counting gold, silver and bronze medals. The raw medal count overly favors populous nations, while ranking nations by medals per capita overly favors small nations that win one, two or a few medals, possibly by fluke. The problem, as I said, is that it’s not reliable when it comes to the performance of very small nations. For example, rural counties dominate the list of counties with the highest kidney cancer rates, which seems like a good reason to rush funding to rural health authorities. But guess what — rural counties also dominate the list of counties with the lowest kidney cancer rates.

CNN —Shoko Miyata, the captain of Japan’s women’s gymnastics team, has withdrawn from Paris 2024 after allegedly breaking the team’s code of conduct by smoking and drinking alcohol, according to the Japanese Gymnastics Association (JGA). The legal smoking and drinking age in Japan is 20 and the JGA’s code of conduct prohibits gymnasts from doing either during team activities, regardless of age. Nishimura said that one incident of smoking took place “in a private place at a certain location in Tokyo” and a separate incident of drinking took place “in a room in the Athlete Village of the National Training Center.”“She engaged in smoking and drinking due to numerous pressures from the competitive targets that had been set,” Nishimura added. Miyata, who won bronze on the balance beam at the 2022 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships, was due to captain Japan’s women’s team of debut Olympians. The country’s women’s team is trying to win its first team medal since the 1964 Tokyo Games.

Read previewThe 2024 Olympic Games could be bigger than ever for athletes looking to build content careers and score brand deals, particularly for young or newer names. "Social media, every single year, has gotten bigger and bigger, and a lot of eyes are on social, digital advertisements now," said Michael Raymond, the founder of Raymond Representation, which works with Olympic athletes, college athletes, and influencers. AdvertisementOut2Win found that during the Tokyo Games, athletes and organizations created 232,000 social posts and gained 113 billion followers. As influencers and platforms lean in, the Paris Games could be even bigger for social media. "One of the challenges in sponsoring Olympic athletes if you're not an Olympic sponsor is that your window to activate with your athlete is small," Poole said.

China’s anti-doping agency has said the 23 athletes tested positive for an “extremely low concentration” of trimetazidine at a national swimming competition in 2021. Trimetazidine has the potential to boost endurance and has been banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) since 2014. “We can’t comment on the reported federal law enforcement investigation,” Travis Tygart, the CEO of the US Anti-Doping Agency, said in a statement to CNN Thursday. CNN —Athing Mu’s hopes of defending her 800-meter title at the Paris Olympics ended in heartbreaking fashion on Monday as she fell to the floor at the US track and field trials. The trio of Nia Atkins, who won in a time of 1:57.36, Allie Wilson, and Juliette Whittaker completed the podium to make the Olympic team. Mu’s fall underlined the sometimes brutal nature of the US Olympic trials, which dictate that only the top three finishers will make the team for an individual event, regardless of an athlete’s pedigree and past results. Despite her lack of races due to a lingering hamstring issue, Mu appeared in good shape at the trials, winning her semifinal in a time of 1:58.84. “I don’t know if my season’s over yet,” Wilson told reporters on Monday.

Hong Kong CNN —Global sport’s anti-doping watchdog has slammed as “outrageous” and “completely false” allegations that it mishandled a 2021 case in which more than 20 elite Chinese swimmers tested positive for a banned performance-enhancing drug. The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) made the comments after US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) chief Travis Tygart accused the agency and Chinese officials of having “swept these positives under carpet” and failing to follow the rules around drugs in sport. The China Anti-Doping Agency (CHINADA) said recent media reports about the cases were “misleading,” according to Chinese state agency Xinhua, citing a statement Saturday. In its statement Saturday, WADA said it was notified in June 2021 of CHINADA’s ruling on the swimmers who had tested positive earlier that year. “These are egregious failures even if you buy their story that this was contamination and a potent drug ‘magically appeared’ in a kitchen and led to 23 positive tests of elite Chinese swimmers,” Tygart said, referencing details included in The New York Times’ article citing a report from Chinese investigators.
