I loved Los Angeles, but one visit was enough. Growing up in Australia, I dreamed of visiting Hollywood. Anadolu/Getty ImagesGrowing up in Australia, I dreamed of visiting Hollywood — the place where so many movies are made. When I was 14, my mom said she was taking me to Los Angeles, and I thought I was the luckiest kid on the planet. When we arrived in Los Angeles, it didn't have the same allure as Mexico did for me.

AdvertisementAyomikun Adekaiyero: The series does a great job of showing how this toxic masculinity among the men — particularly Aegon, Daemon, and Criston — escalates this conflict. I think he's a character that — don't get me wrong, I love Daemon — got a little bit muddied in season one. Ayomikun: Also, though I do believe both Aegon and Daemon want war for the wrong reasons, they're kind of right? Ayomikun: Criston and Aegon are really like that "It's always two dumb people telling each other exactlyyyyy" meme. Ayomikun: The fight was a truly brilliant scene, especially since we as the audience can't really tell which twin is which.

Read previewThe Federal Reserve's reluctance to lower interest rates in the near term is a risky gamble that could drive the US towards a recession, Claudia Sahm told CNBC. "But it's a real risk, and I do not understand why the Fed is pushing that risk. At current readings, that likely means just one rate cut in 2024, the Fed said. For this reason, Sahm told CNBC that the Fed should start a gradual cutting cycle now, and take the economy off a path that could require more severe action if not addressed. Markets, meanwhile, remain convinced that the Fed will follow with more than just one cut.

The market has been on a tear in 2024, driven higher by robust corporate earnings and the artificial intelligence boom. Traders expect the Fed to begin easing rates in September at the earliest, according to the CME FedWatch Tool. If inflation is cooling down but the Fed is still expected to keep its key lending rate higher for longer, what does that mean for the stock market? The data will tell us that, but I think the big takeaway for us is [inflation] going in the right direction. Do you expect some of the cash that’s on the sidelines to enter the stock market?

Despite all the good news, there’s one giant, inescapable reason why people don’t feel like the economy is as good as it actually is. Shelter costs — which include rent and an estimated cost of homeownership — were up 5.4% from a year ago. There are some early signs that the housing market is becoming a bit less stuck. At the same time, the one-two punch of inflation and high borrowing costs have discouraged first-time buyers, reducing competition for houses. Of course, as Powell noted in his speech Wednesday, it may take “years” for housing inflation to normalize.

The pressure is heating up on Apple to flaunt its AI potential at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference Monday. Shares of Apple have lagged major technology peers since the start of the year, rising just 1.5%. While the Apple event isn't typically regarded as a big market-moving stock catalyst, the highly anticipated announcement of new generative AI-enabled features changes the narrative this year, Woodring said. He added that shares tend to underperform the S & P 500 by 10 basis points on average on the day of the event. The analyst retained a $225 price target on Apple shares, implying 14% upside from Friday's close.

Gen Z wants to talk about mental health. In a 2023 survey of nearly 3,000 people, Gen Z was almost twice as likely as other generations to say they struggled with their mental health. Related storiesA healthy work environment is one where people feel supported and encouraged to do meaningful work — not one that fixates on their mental health. What does have a tangible impact on people's well-being at work is whether they find their work meaningful. Biden unveiled the sweeping executive action Tuesday afternoon at the White House, attempting to use executive action to affect the situation on the border after a bipartisan measure failed earlier this year. The new executive action bars migrants who cross the border illegally from seeking asylum – a departure from decades-long protocol – once a daily threshold is met. Senior administration officials told reporters Tuesday it would be lifted when there’s a daily average of less than 1,500 encounters in between ports of entry. Senior administration officials acknowledged that federal resources are strained, which could pose a challenge, but they maintain that the measure will help them remove people more quickly. Senior administration officials Tuesday cited the measure as a tool to help head off that potential increase.

Why we need to know what time it is on the moon

CNN —It’s easy to take the moon for granted as a silvery orb in the night sky, providing a soft light on most evenings. The new system of measurement that NASA and its international partners need to agree on will have to account for the fact that seconds tick by faster on the moon.
