Rental car giant Hertz Global Holdings announced Monday it would pay $168 million to settle 364 claims that it erroneously filed criminal reports against customers who did not return vehicles on time. In February, CBS News reported that Hertz was facing lawsuits from hundreds of customers who said they were falsely arrested for auto theft. Hertz Global Holdings also operates Dollar Rent A Car and Thrifty Car Rental, among others. Hertz said it believes it will recover some part of the settlement amount from its insurance carriers. It said the settlements resolve more than 95% of its pending theft reporting claims.
Car-rental company Hertz has agreed to pay $168 million in settlements with hundreds of customers. Hertz said the settlement will resolve almost all of the over 360 pending claims against it. One of the customers who joined the class-action lawsuit against Hertz for the false theft reports was arrested four times, according to the lawsuit. Nicholas Wright previously told Insider that his then-13-year-old daughter, who was with him during the incident with police, is in therapy and struggles to see law enforcement out on the street. "As a 14-year-old young lady that is going to be a long-term thing that she's probably going to struggle with for the rest of her life," Wright told Insider.

Best Buy Co Inc (BBY.N) jumped 12.4%, leading gains on S&P 500 (.SPX) index, after forecasting a smaller drop in annual sales than previously estimated, confident that a ramp up in deals and discounts will lure more customers. "People are hopeful that consumers can still squeeze out a strong holiday season despite the headwinds they're facing," said Brandon Pizzurro, director of public investments at GuideStone Capital Management. "It would be an upside surprise if consumers really brought their full wallet to the table this year, probably what's driving Best Buy movement today." Gains in Best Buy boosted the S&P 500 retail (.SPXRT) sector index, but a 9.4% fall in Dollar Tree Inc (DLTR.O) capped the upside as the discount retailer lowered its annual profit forecast for the second time. Energy (.SPNY) led gains among the 11 major S&P 500 sector indexes, up 3.0%, as oil prices rose after top exporter Saudi Arabia said OPEC+ stuck with output cuts.

LONDON, Nov 7 (Reuters) - Six in ten Britons believe they will have less money to spend over the Christmas period than last year, according to a survey published on Monday, adding to evidence that a thrifty festive season beckons. The survey from Deloitte found 38% plan to switch to cheaper brands or stores to seek out gifts, and for Christmas Day dinner 35% plan to do at least part of their shop at a discount supermarket. "Consumers are entering the festive season with budgets under more pressure this year, and it is not surprising that almost all are considering affordability and adapting their typical Christmas spending habits in one way or another," Oliver Vernon-Harcourt, head of retail at Deloitte, said. With inflation at a 40-year high of 10.1%, interest rates rising and consumer confidence close to the gloomiest on record, Britons have cut their spending. Deloitte's findings chimed with surveys last month from Kantar and Accenture, which both showed Britons planning to cut festive spending this year.

This photograph taken on August 7, 2018, shows an American Airlines Airbus A330-243 aircraft on the tarmac at Roissy-Charles de Gaulle Airport, north of Paris. It's a welcome shift for airlines as they seek to drum up revenue after travel restrictions and concerns about Covid-19 sapped demand for many European trips in 2020 and 2021. Lucrative business travel segments have been slower to return than leisure, making these trips all the more crucial. "I think there's no question that people's appetite for going to Europe has gotten longer," said Kyle Potter, executive editor of Thrifty Traveler, a travel and flight deal website. Plus, a strong U.S. dollar is making fall trips to Europe more attractive, driving down costs of everything from shopping in Milan to high-end dining in Paris or London for many U.S. travelers.
But this summer, the food stamps couldn't keep up with the grocery store's rising prices, sending her in search of a food donation for the first time. Alex Jung in the February cover story for Harper's Bazaar. "I went into this mode of, if I can make $500 a month, that's all I need, because that's how much my rent was at the time," she tells Harper's Bazaar. "To this day I feel like I'm still in that 'All I need is 500-a-month' mindset." she said to Harper's Bazaar. "Yes, I always feel impostor syndrome because there are so many talented people out there," Lum tells Harper's Bazaar.
