Now, more than ever, the U.S. needs Central American nations like El Salvador to curb migration to the southern border. In October, the State Department's top Latin America diplomat, Brian Nichols, visited El Salvador and posed for photos with Bukele. WAITING IN THE WINGSAt the same time, there are growing ties between China and El Salvador. Although of limited commercial importance in itself, El Salvador offers China a foothold in Central America, and in 2017 broke relations with Taiwan in favor of China. "El Salvador wants to do trade with everyone," Bukele said during his victory speech on Sunday night.

While he undergoes treatment, King Charles, 75, will "postpone public-facing duties" while continuing to work on his usual State business from home, according to the statement. With the king out of commission for public engagements, it will fall to the rest of the royal family to step more into the public eye while he heals. WASHINGTON (AP) — Senators on Sunday raced to release a highly-anticipated bill that pairs border enforcement policy with wartime aid for Ukraine, Israel and other U.S. allies as part of a long-shot effort to push the package through heavy skepticism from Republicans, including House Speaker Mike Johnson. With Congress stalled on approving tens of billions of dollars in Ukraine aid, the U.S. has halted shipments of ammunition and missiles to Kyiv, leaving Ukrainian soldiers outgunned as they try to beat back Russia's invasion. In a bid to overcome opposition from House Republicans, McConnell had insisted last year that border policy changes be included in the national security funding package. However, in an election-year shift on immigration, Biden and many Democrats have embraced the idea of strict border enforcement, while Donald Trump and his allies have both criticized the proposed measures as insufficient. Biden, referencing the authority, has said he would use it to “shut down the border” as soon as the bill is signed into law.

Johnson, a Republican of Louisiana, in an interview Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press" said he was unaware of the bill's details, but pointed to a House proposal of hardline immigration measures. The border proposal, which took months to negotiate, is aimed at gaining control of an asylum system that has been overwhelmed by historic numbers of migrants coming to the border.

In the final minutes of a congressional hearing on Wednesday in which tech chief executives were berated for not protecting children online, Senator Richard J. Durbin, Democrat of Illinois, urged lawmakers to act to safeguard the internet’s youngest users. Lawmakers have long made similar statements about holding tech companies to account — and have little to show for it. Yet for years, that was where it ended: with no new federal regulations for the companies to follow. And already, there are indicators that the topic of online child safety may gain more traction legislatively. The efforts are backed by emotional accounts of children who were victimized online and died by suicide.

A core group of negotiators have been laboring for nearly two months over changes to U.S. border and immigration policy and hoped to unveil the legislation later this week. However, the emergency funding package has been delayed months in Congress after Republicans insisted that border policy changes also be included in the package. It remains to be seen whether the border policy changes, which have been negotiated in private with top White House officials, will be enough to satisfy most Republican senators. The group has mostly reached agreements on policy changes, but on Monday was working with Senate appropriators to determine funding levels for the programs. Democrats have bemoaned the Republican decision to tie Ukraine aid with border policy changes.

All Eyes on Iowa as Republicans Ready for Caucuses

Known for his hard-line stances against abortion and LGBTQ+ priorities, DeSantis could get a boost from an Iowa Republican electorate that is unusually socially conservative. But even those plum endorsements aren't moving Iowa Republicans from the Trump camp. "Donald Trump is a lap ahead of the field," says former Iowa Republican Party co-chairman David Oman, a former chief of staff to two GOP Iowa governors and a prominent Haley supporter. The morning after an anticipated Trump win in the Iowa caucuses, a trial starts in New York to determine a second set of damages in a defamation case brought by writer E. Jean Carroll. Southwest Airlines CEO Bob Jordan speaks as he is interviewed by CNBC outside the New York Stock Exchange on Dec. 9, 2021. With the peak Christmas travel season just days away, Southwest Airlines ' CEO vowed that the carrier will not have a repeat of last year's meltdown that stranded thousands of customers and cost the airline more than $1 billion. "It will never happen again," Bob Jordan said at an event Thursday at the Wings Club in New York. Last year, Southwest canceled close to 17,000 flights over the crucial Christmas and New Year's holiday period as it failed to recover from severe weather that gripped most of the country. Southwest struggled with staffing issues as storms left flight attendants and pilots out of position for their next flights, thousands of passenger bags piled up and planes were behind on de-icing.

Sustainable aviation fuel, or SAF, is a type of alternative jet fuel that can curb carbon emissions by up to 80%. The main reason for the slow adoption is that it’s still more expensive – between 1.5 to 6 times pricier than regular jet fuel. Boeing is not out of the race either, but doesn’t see a hydrogen long-haul plane as around the corner. On medium- and long-haul flights, we don’t see it as a direct source of propulsion until 2040. We would need to see magnitude-order changes [in batteries] for us to consider those for long-haul flights.
