Stocks are up modestly in early trading Wednesday, but the usual signals of volume spikes and higher volatility are still not present. Yet here we are, with the 10-year at 4.55% yesterday and looking like it wants to get to 5.0% fast. Total equity volume yesterday was 10.4 billion shares, well below the September 2022 average of 11.4 billion, and 3% below the average level even for August, a vacation month. Modest volumes, relatively low volatility with prices down notably means there is no selling panic, but there is a buyer's strike in stocks. They need to see rates come down before they have confidence to buy stocks again."

Mark Cuban says the "most important" advice he gives his children is simple: It's OK not to know exactly what you want to do with your lives. "Everybody goes through that process of trying to figure out who they are," Cuban, 65, said, adding that he told his daughter: "You don't have to know what you're going to be. And you're changing, and you're evolving." "What you've got to be able to do is be agile and excited about learning — to be curious," Cuban said. If you're curious, and you're agile, you'll get there eventually.

U.S. stock futures , , were slightly firmer ahead of the opening bell on Wall Street, signalling a pause after sharp losses on Thursday amid uncertainty over interest rates going into 2024. Benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury yields hit a 16-year high of 4.508%, later trading at 4.48%, while 30-year yields hit their highest in a dozen years. The Fed revised downwards its unemployment rate forecast for next year, and if the U.S. economic data continued to improve, it would put "upside risk" on interest rates, making the need for a soft landing all the greater, Osman added. Ten-year Japanese government bond futures rallied though cash yields were little changed and near decade highs at 0.745%. Gold firmed 0.3% to $1,925 an ounce despite pressure from the stronger dollar and bond yields.

The reason for this brilliant display is the sun, which shot a giant eruption of charged particles toward Earth on Sunday. The colorful Northern Lights, or aurora borealis, appear when electrically charged particles from the sun interact with molecules in Earth's atmosphere. Northern Lights may appear unusually far southTypically these dazzling green, red, pink, and purple lights only appear around the Arctic Circle, or around the South Pole (there it's called the aurora australis). That's because our planet's magnetic field lines channel the steady stream of particles, called the "solar wind," to the poles. During second-quarter earnings reports in August and September, nearly two dozen retailers said shrink has continued to weigh on profits. During its second quarter earnings call with analysts, the company said shrink was in line with the year-ago period. Over the last few quarters, more and more retailers have called out shrink as a drain on profits and blamed theft for those losses. Others that loosely blame shrink and theft for plummeting profits without providing much more explanation may be trying to obfuscate internal issues, said Lapinsky. Contrary to other retailers, shrink was the largest drag on Ulta's earnings during fiscal 2022, according to a securities filing.

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — Losing a game at the Basketball World Cup, the U.S. national team said, was quite the wake-up call. The Americans turned words into actions and handed the Italians their worst loss in a global tournament — the World Cup or the Olympics — in nearly 45 years. “They created very good shots and they made them.”It was the quarterfinal round where it all went wrong for the U.S. at the World Cup four years ago in China. Italy had beaten the U.S. only twice in 14 previous tries at the senior men’s national level, both times at the world championships — which FIBA now calls the World Cup. … Guaranteed no worse than eighth place, this will be Italy's best World Cup showing since finishing sixth in 1998.

The first time I worked at Amazon I was on the same team the entire time, so I was already looking for a change. That was sort of the final thing that pushed me to look outside of Amazon and take a new job. I'm angry, I'm frustrated. I've never seen Amazon make any sort of large-scale, top-down mandate like this without some sort of reason behind it. The jobs I'm looking at are significant pay cuts.

A general view shows parts of the structure of flight terminal at an abandoned construction site of a Mexico City airport that was scrapped at Texcoco on the outskirts of Mexico City, Mexico September 3, 2020. "The finance ministry asked for everything to stay the same, so that's what's going to happen," Deputy Transportation Minister Rogelio Jimenez Pons told reporters. Jimenez had previously said that the finance ministry was considering an earlier payback schedule, as the funds used to pay off the bonds for the canceled airport currently come from a usage tax generated by the existing Mexico City International Airport (AICM). Once the Navy runs the AICM, which Jimenez said he expects to happen later this year, it may decide to renegotiate a buyback with the finance ministry, he added. Lopez Obrador opened the farther-away Felipe Angeles International Airport (AIFA) last year as an alternative to the Texcoco airport on an active military base.

Ether , which has joined bitcoin in recent months as a sort of large cap, blue-chip trade in crypto, was down by 1.4%, after finishing July down by 3.35%. It was under extra pressure due to a recent exploit in DeFi giant Curve, however. Bitcoin volumes have also dropped significantly from their recent highs and have failed to reclaim them despite the price of bitcoin showing so much resilience this year. Jim Cramer explains Ford's electric vehicle price cuts
  + stars: | 2023-07-17 | by ( Julie Coleman | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
CNBC's Jim Cramer on Monday analyzed Ford Motor 's move to slash prices for its electric F-150 Lightning pickup truck. Cramer said he thinks the price cuts are due at least in part to the novelty of EVs wearing off for many Americans. It doesn't help, Cramer said, that these cuts come just a few days after Tesla unveiled its first Cybertruck, the optics of which he called "suboptimal." "Ultimately, unless your costs come down — and that's what's happening with Ford — there will be no profit anyway," Cramer said. "But if an auto company doesn't make electric vehicles, that auto company will eventually be doomed, we all know that."

It's been less than a year since he bought it, and Elon Musk's Twitter is already well on its way to suffering a fate worse than death — irrelevance. A small handful of experts claim to have evidence that our satellite produces forces that can trigger earthquakes. The moon's effect on earthquakes was hiddenScientists have long pondered whether the moon's tides could be linked to earthquakes. And it seems that in some cases, the moon did help trigger earthquakes around the world. By digging into these datasets, a few studies have suggested a link between Earth tides and earthquakes. Rather, it is when the rock is on the very brink of collapse that the moon's small tug could push it past that final tipping point.

And an increase in underlying core inflation to 4.7%, up from a 4.6% pace in March, underscored the less-than-steady progress on the Fed's inflation fight. In March Mester had already expected the Fed to raise the policy rate beyond its current 5.00%-5.25% range. Fed policymakers also say they are watching credit conditions closely, though Mester on Friday said that so far she's not seeing worrisome "extra" tightening from the recent regional bank failures. Odds in futures markets are running three to one in favor of a rate hike by then. Other Fed policymakers have echoed that hawkish call.
Phil Murphy on Wednesday said he would consider defying the Supreme Court and continue to provide mifepristone if the court rules in favor of a ban on the abortion pill. When asked if the state would prescribe mifepristone after such a ruling, Murphy told MSNBC: "To be determined." It's going to cost them health, it's also going to cost peoples' lives, women in particular sadly. That's what's at stake, we'll do whatever it takes to save lives," said Murphy, a Democrat. The case hinges on whether the Food and Drug Administration's approval of the abortion pill should be rolled back.

Insider spoke to Ali Schouten, the showrunner behind Paramount+ series "iCarly," about what's at stake. The "iCarly" writers will link up with the picket line outside the lot where the show is filmed, according to Ali Schouten, the series' showrunner and executive producer. Ahead of the "iCarly" writers' picketing on Thursday, I spoke with Schouten to understand what she and her colleagues are fighting for. Lisa Rose/Paramount+The last writers' strike resulted in $2 billion worth of losses for the California economy, and some experts predict the impact of this work stoppage could be even greater. How is the writers' strike impacting you, your business, or your family?
Credit Suisse's Chief US Economist Ray Farris says home prices will see a 'long recession.' Rather, the market is likely to go through a sort of holding period, where activity stays low and prices neither boom nor bust. You can spread the housing market over many more locales in the US and that's what's happening." And the way I think of that, as a base case, it means that even as mortgage rates come down, the housing market doesn't recover rapidly. Morgan Stanley's Ellen Zentner is one economist that — like Farris — doesn't expect a recession, and only sees prices falling another 4% this year.
Discovery's CEO said he thinks a "love for working" will end the writers' strike. David Zaslav also said the 10,000 striking writers deserved to be paid fairly. Discovery says he thinks the widespread writers' strike will be ended by writers' "love of storytelling and lover for working." While Zaslav lent into emotive arguments to end the strike, he did also suggest writers deserved a better pay package. "In order to create great storytelling, we need great writers," Zaslav said in the interview.
