Stern, New Jersey’s first poet laureate, died Thursday at Calvary Hospice in New York City, according to his longtime partner, Anne Marie Macari. He regarded “The One Thing in Life,” from the 1977 collection “Lucky Life,” as the poem that best defined him. Stern studied political science at the University of Pittsburgh and received a master’s in comparative literature from Columbia University. The state’s Stop WOKE Act forbids instructors from teaching students that they should feel guilty about past injustices. In fact, the belief that education should impart certain values along with raw knowledge and skills motivated early advocates who saw universal public education as essential to democracy. Founders of traditional American public education like Horace Mann were committed to education as indoctrination in civic values. If Florida schools converted to such a system, perhaps DeSantis and anxious parents could learn to trust their children and put their minds at rest.

A student-loan company worker expressed concern with the lack of guidance on Biden's debt relief. "There's a complete lack of guidance from the Education Department on what to advise borrowers," the worker, who requested to remain anonymous but whose identity is known to Insider, said. The worker specifically assists borrowers within the Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) program, who have loans that are commercially-held and not eligible for federal relief. Currently, the Education Department is advising those borrowers to consolidate their loans into direct federal loans so they can qualify for forgiveness. In response to the worker's concerns, an Education Department spokesperson pointed Insider to the FFEL guidance already on its website and did not have any additional details to provide.

Two dangerous and highly potent illicit drugs are increasingly infiltrating the supply of street drugs, putting people at risk for deadly overdoses. "Nitazenes are an emerging group of highly potent psychoactive substances" that are often left out of drug screening tests, the report's authors wrote. The highly potent opioids has been found in street drugs across the Midwest and Northeast since 2019, but has since spread to other states. She and her colleagues have recently begun to detect nitazenes in illicit drug samples gathered across the state. The drug has also been linked to reports of skin abscesses, not unlike cases seen in other injectable drug users.

A Philadelphia drag performer beloved by the local LGBTQ community died Monday night during a performance at a popular gay bar. Valencia Prime, 25, was performing at Tabu Lounge and Sports bar, in the heart of Philadelphia's Gayborhood, when she collapsed on stage, bar owner Jeffrey Sotland said.
