Earlier this month the Danish company, the world's largest offshore wind developer, also scrapped two U.S. offshore wind projects, flagging $5.6 billion in related impairments as costs ballooned due to rising interest rates and supply bottlenecks. Olsen Renewables AS, and Norwegian power producer Hafslund formed the Blaavinge consortium in 2021 to take part in planned offshore wind tenders in Norway. Olsen Seawind and Hafslund will not be able to participate in the bottom-fixed wind tender now that Orsted has pulled out of the consortium, Bonheur said. However, they still plan to work on a tender for floating offshore wind turbines. Norway has yet to announce the date for a floating offshore wind tender.

United Airlines plans to make it easier for customers to earn elite status through co-branded Chase credit cards, the latest airline to tweak its lucrative frequent flyer program to reward big spenders. The airline isn't changing overall requirements for elite frequent flyer status next year, a first for the carrier since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. Instead, United said Thursday that in 2024, it will reward customers with 25 qualifying points for every $500 they spend on co-branded cards. The carrier will also lift caps on credit card spending that can qualify toward elite status. Of the $4 billion writedown, $2.8 billion was connected to the Ocean Wind 1 project, Orsted said. The Ocean Wind 1 project would have been New Jersey's first offshore wind farm and would have generated enough electricity to power half a million homes, according to a website about the project. It was going to include 98 turbines located 15 miles off the coast of southern New Jersey. The similarly sized Ocean Wind 2 project was also going to be located off the southern New Jersey shore and was due to start in 2028, according to a website about the project.

United Airlines will change its boarding order next week by letting economy-class passengers who have selected window seats to board before those with middle and aisle seats. The company said the change could shave two minutes off the boarding process. Airlines regularly tinker with boarding procedures to save precious time getting passengers onto planes, generally rewarding their biggest spenders with some of the earliest boarding. The new boarding process will be implemented on all domestic flights and some international flights.

United Airlines says that it will start boarding passengers in economy class with window seats first starting next week, a move that will speed up boarding times for flights. The plan, known as WILMA, for window, middle and aisle, was tested at four domestic locations and one hub. Those with window seats will board first, followed by those with middle seats and then those with aisle seats. United and many other airlines halted the flights shortly after Hamas militants attacked Israel on Oct. 7. Shares of United Airlines Holdings Inc. fell more than 8% Wednesday.

Shares of United Airlines tumbled more than 7% on Wednesday morning and took the rest of the industry down with them after the carrier gave a gloomy outlook for fourth-quarter profit, which will be reduced by rising jet fuel prices. In addition, United's revenue could be disappointing the longer that flights to Israel are suspended for the Israel-Hamas war. United reported after the market closed Tuesday that it earned $1.14 billion in the third quarter, beating Wall Street expectations for profit and revenue. Investors, however, focused immediately on the airline's prediction that fourth-quarter earnings would be between $1.50 and $1.80 per share, well below analysts' forecast of $2.09 per share. All three suspended their service shortly after Hamas militants attacked Israel on Oct. 7.

United Airlines said more expensive jet fuel and a halt to the carrier's Tel Aviv flights during the Israel-Hamas war will eat into its profits in the last three months of the year. United and other U.S. and international carriers halted their flights to Israel earlier this month. United had more service to Israel than any of the U.S.-based airlines with service from Washington D.C., Newark, New Jersey and San Francisco. Its costs, excluding fuel will likely rise between 3.5% and 5% in the fourth quarter from 2022, United said.
