CNN —Iga Świątek remains on course to retain her French Open title after easing past Coco Gauff 6-4 6-2 to reach the semifinals at Roland-Garros. In a rematch of last year’s final, Świątek ultimately had too much quality for Gauff to handle as her relentless power and consistency eventually broke the American down. It wasn’t easy, especially with the wind today, but I’m happy I’m through to the semifinal.”Swiatek remains on course to successfully defend her French Open title. It proved to be the beginning of the end for Gauff, who was powerless to stop Świątek’s inevitable march to victory. Świątek, according to Opta, is the first player since Conchita Martinez in 1995 to reach the semifinals at the French Open having dropped 15 games or fewer.

Apple CEO Tim Cook arrives for the season three premiere of "Ted Lasso" at the Regency Village Theater in Los Angeles, California, on March 7, 2023. Apple CEO Tim Cook said recently that he uses ChatGPT, the AI chatbot, and is excited about the tool's "unique applications." Cook added that large language models — the AI tools that power chatbots like OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Bard — show "great promise" but also the potential for "things like bias, things like misinformation [and] maybe worse in some cases." The Apple CEO also offered his thoughts on regulation and guardrails, saying they're needed but that AI is powerful and the tech's development is moving quickly. "If you look down the road, then it's so powerful that companies have to employ their own ethical decisions," Cook said.

Opinion | Why America Desperately Needed Ted Lasso

NASHVILLE — I didn’t watch the first season of “Ted Lasso” until the second season was already underway on Apple TV+. I wish I’d been watching from the very beginning, when it first began streaming in 2020. It is simply the story of a heartbroken but optimistic American football coach who accepts a job as manager of a British football team in the hands of a heartbroken and pessimistic owner who has just won it in a bitter divorce. Rebecca Welton knows almost nothing about running a sports franchise, and her imported coach knows almost nothing about the game that Brits call football. “You know what the happiest animal in the world is?” Ted asks a glum player just bested in a team scrimmage.

Ted Lasso, a fish-out-of-water soccer coach, demonstrates empathy and humility as a leader. Lessons from the TV series "Ted Lasso" can be applied to those leading others in business. That was perhaps one of the most memorable bits of homespun advice from the run of "Ted Lasso." Leaders in business — particularly those thrust into unfamiliar situations — could benefit from adopting the Lasso way: Those in charge can be more successful by showing emotional intelligence and resilience. "We learn the transformative power of positivity, empathy, and teamwork from Ted Lasso.

‘Ted Lasso’ Finale Recap: Family

There are TV finales that go out with a shock or on a sad note or with a healthy dose of ambivalence. But that was not how “Ted Lasso” was ever going to end. Were you one of those who fell for the Rebecca–Ted fake out at the breakfast island that opened the episode? By which I mean, one of the (sane) viewers who was horrified at such a terrible idea or one of the (I’m sure very nice, though highly misguided) viewers who felt vindicated? It was a sneaky move, but with time running out I’m not sure how else we were ever going to see Beard in a banana hammock.

‘Ted Lasso’ Taught Phil Dunster How to Play Nice

But his take on the character, informed by his deep soccer fandom, came to dictate much of how the character was written, he explained, right down to jokes that hinge on Dunster’s twanging accent. (One of the most memorable lines in Season 3 revolves around his singular pronunciation of a colloquial term for excrement.) “I don’t want to put it down solely to my performance as Oliver in a Year 3 production at school, but that laid the foundation of me being a show-off,” he said. “I flocked, man — I had someone who was looking after me, and I still managed to screw everything up,” he said. On the bus ride home, he was dismayed: “I remember thinking, ‘What am I doing?

MANCHESTER, England, May 26 (Reuters) - As a big fan of Apple TV's popular soccer comedy "Ted Lasso", Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola said he was happy to appear as himself on the show's penultimate episode that aired this week. "As a family, my little daughter Valentina and my wife, we enjoy a lot to watch the show," Guardiola told a press conference on Friday. "We are big fans, and when they offered a cameo, I said why not and I could meet the actors. The fictional AFC Richmond beat City in the episode called "Mom City", and Lasso, played by Jason Sudeikis, and Guardiola shake hands after the game ends. The scene was shot before an actual City game at the Etihad and the cast and crew returned to watch a recent game there.
It said it plans to spend $15.3 billion on tech this year, up $1 billion from last year. The bank's tech spending is estimated to grow by $1 billion this year to $15.3 billion, including salaries for engineers, stepped-up cybersecurity efforts, and AI innovation. The regional banking crisis, meanwhile, could end up costing it $6 billion, including the cost of First Republic Bank. He did, however, outline the qualities he thinks would make for a good replacement CEO, including grit and courage. JPMorgan unleashed hundreds of slides on Monday to reassure investors that its growth and spending strategy is on the right track.
Do Dress Sneakers Belong in the Oval Office?

Think of it as a rare instance of cross-aisle consensus or else a sartorial trend gone badly wrong. But it did not go unnoticed when, in a photograph from the Oval Office posted to President Joe Biden’s account this week, Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy, Senator Mitch McConnell and Representative Hakeem Jeffries were all captured wearing some variant of the dreaded footwear hybrid: the sneaker shoe. Weighing in on Twitter, cult men’s wear commentator Derek Guy (@dieworkwear) called out the footgear as a clear lapse in dignity, if not actual protocol. Why pay a visit to a sitting president dressed in shoes designed for power-walking at the mall? “Awful,” Yang-Yi Goh, style director of GQ, pronounced the shoe that has become a style default among Capitol Hill staffers.

WHAT IS PRESIDENT LASSO ACCUSED OF? Lasso, a former banker who took power in 2021, has denied the charges and says they are politically motivated. Ecuador's National Assembly began an impeachment hearing against Lasso on Tuesday, following a vote on May 9 to move forward in the process against him, which was passed with 88 votes from the 116 legislators present. Lasso invoked the "two-way death" on Wednesday, citing Ecuador's grave political crisis.
Why Ted Lasso’s Shoe Game Is So Strong

There’s a reason that Ted Lasso, the fictional, sunny, mustachioed American hired to manage an English football club in the Apple TV+ series of the same name, is a sneakerhead. “It was rooted in my own enthusiasm for sneakers and sneaker culture,” said Jason Sudeikis, who has sported more than a dozen pairs of blue, orange and even red paisley Air Jordans as the show’s titular coach. In a recent call from London, Mr. Sudeikis said that Ted’s affinity for footwear was also inspired, in part, by his longtime friend Brendan Curran, a fellow sneaker enthusiast and high school basketball coach in Lenexa, Kan., who connected with his students over this shared interest. “It was this bit of unspoken respect and camaraderie among him and his players and his students,” Mr. Sudeikis, 47, said of Mr. Curran and his team.

"Ted Lasso" became a global sensation in 2020 partly because of the kindness of its main character. But behind the scenes, being nice wasn't just a suggestion — it was a rule. In his commencement address to Sarah Lawrence College graduates on Friday, "Ted Lasso" co-creator Bill Lawrence broke down the No. 1 rule he gives every new actor and writer he hires: "Don't be an ass----." Lawrence, who also created "Scrubs," told the class of 2023 that he is blunt with his employees about the expectations he has for the way they treat each other, as well as other people, on set.
Speaking of Jack, it appears that particular subplot has already run its highly unnecessary course. But even I’m a little taken aback at how casually the show has discarded a once semi-central story line. Keeley and Jack had one fight, Jack slammed the door like Nora in “A Doll’s House” and now (unlike Nora) she has relocated to Argentina. (Has anyone else noticed that Richmond seems to alternate between long winning and losing streaks without ever being, you know, average?) Later, Isaac refuses Colin’s invitation to get a beer with a curt, angry “No.” Next, before the game with Brighton & Hove Albion — I’m with Ted; sounds like a law firm — Isaac leaves Colin’s attempted fist-bump un-bumped.
But the tug that Henry exerts on his father’s heart, while scarcely new, is ever more evident — in particular during the goodbyes that close the episode, when Ted can scarcely let go of Henry’s backpack. NateWhen we first run across Nate this episode, he is in bed in the morning. Upon waking, she quickly determines that, charmingly, Nate had already gotten up, showered, shaved, brushed his teeth and gotten back into bed. We’ve gone straight from romantic tension to romantic fulfillment without witnessing the romantic journey at all, at least so far. Which is perhaps part of the reason Nate’s most moving relationship is still his complicated one with Ted.
But ahead of a potential Hollywood writers' strike, the streamer faces two key vulnerabilities. Hollywood is bracing for a possible writers' strike that could begin at midnight PT, following an overwhelming strike authorization by members of the Writers' Guild of America West and East last month. But, by comparison, Prime Video, Netflix, and Discovery+ offer viewers thousands of TV series, according to ReelGood data from the end of 2022. "They're building a long-term brand of Apple TV+, which is something apart from all their devices and their cool software. It would not damage the perception that people have of Apple TV+."
Opinion | Ted Lasso, Holy Fool

Each Wednesday night my husband and I tune in to watch “Ted Lasso,” the Emmy award-winning Apple TV+ comedy series. They climb into an impossibly small car, and Ted calls out to Rebecca, his serious, conniving new boss, “Look! Holy fools dwell in ordinary, secular life, but they approach it with completely different values. Rejecting respectability and embracing humility and love, holy fools are so profoundly out of step with the broader world that they appear to be ridiculous or even insane and often invite ridicule. Early in the series, Ted tells a reporter named Trent Crimm: “For me, success is not about the wins and losses.
At the end of the episode, Sam takes his father to see the fractured restaurant, only to find his teammates hard at work repairing it. Now, I confess I’d spent much of the episode trying to remember why Sam had named the restaurant Ola’s; I was planning to recheck Episode 3 and even last season for clues. Keeley and JackPresumably having Aurora-Borealised to their hearts’ content last episode, Keeley and Jack mostly limit themselves to coffee this time around, even if those coffees involve signed Jane Austen first editions and jewelry-filled pastry. In between, Keeley — who’d confided to Jack her love of daisies — returns to an office overflowing with them. (Also, is it just me or is it a tad stalker-y for Jack to secretly pay for Keeley and Rebecca’s dinner?)

Amazon needs to watch out for Charlie Bell. A founder of Amazon Web Services and the firm's "best person in the room," Bell shook the industry last September when he joined Microsoft. Bell will be overseeing a new cybersecurity division at Microsoft — but insiders at both Amazon and Microsoft wonder if he'll go more directly up against his former employer. My colleague Ashley Stewart examines the growing threat of Microsoft now that Bell is free from his noncompete purgatory. Look into the future here for Bell — and Microsoft — without Amazon's restrictions.
Ted, on the other hand, is understandably conflicted. Ted, having had his fill of foreignness, heads to the Yankee Doodle Burger Barn restaurant, which advertises American food in American portions. (For those who didn’t make the connection, the barbecue sauce the waitress brings him is from Arthur Bryant’s, Ted’s favorite joint in Kansas City.) Coincidentally, an old Jordan-era Bulls game is on the television, featuring the triangle offense implemented by the coach Phil Jackson. The first is the revelation that Beard’s drugs were duds: Ted wasn’t high at all!
Nine days after the World Health Organization declared Covid-19 a pandemic, “Tiger King” premiered. In this time of relative calm, it’s possible to see the pandemic as not just a crisis of public health but also a distinct cultural era with its own emerging canon. What unites these shows, movies, books and songs is not a common aesthetic or shared themes. We asked an array of cultural critics to consider the following 17 artifacts, each of which captured something essential during Covid. These works reflected a tumultuous moment back at us, illuminating it and us, too.
Apple CEO Tim Cook attended the season premiere of the Apple show “Ted Lasso” in Los Angeles earlier this month. Saturday, Mr. Cook spoke in Beijing about Apple’s growth in China. BEIJING— Apple Inc.’s Tim Cook took the stage Saturday at an economic conference in Beijing sponsored by the Chinese government, giving an upbeat talk that was welcomed with applause. The treatment his counterpart at TikTok received days earlier in Washington couldn’t have been more different: hours of questioning by lawmakers over the short-video platform’s links to Beijing.
