The company is turning to Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo for help. In a recent meeting with Raimondo, Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger voiced frustration over the heavy reliance that U.S. companies have on Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing , the world's largest contract chipmaker. Intel is currently building out plants in four U.S. states as it seeks to become more of a foundry business, manufacturing chips for other suppliers. It's an increasingly important initiative for Intel, which is getting trounced in the market for microprocessors. Concerns have been rising for years that China could invade Taiwan, creating a massive risk for the U.S. chip industry.

September is living up to its reputation as a difficult month. " In other words, a tough, choppy market for investors. The markets opened positive, with a nice lift from Oracle , which is keeping the expanding artificial intelligence story going. The company's positive comments on AI helped lift the hyperscalers ( Amazon , Microsoft , Alphabet ) as well. Put this all together, and it reinforces the view that there is no reason to stick your neck out.

At the end of [the] 1980s, Japanese companies accounted for like 51% of the global semiconductor market. So by doing this ... one thing undercut Japanese semiconductor chip makers' competitiveness in the global market. Another thing [is] that [it] forced open [the] Japanese semiconductor market to foreign players, and this creates opportunity for the U.S., South Korea and Taiwan. And Japanese companies are trying to both develop their own capacity but also attract phone companies to establish fabs there. So by collaborating with international companies, Japanese companies can leverage their existing technology and manufacturing techniques to expand their global share as well.

Markets around the world are getting some relief after the steep declines suffered Monday. Japan's Nikkei 225 surged more than 10% overnight — its biggest one-day gain since 2008 — clawing back some of its losses from the previous session. In the U.S., stock futures pointed to slight gains at the open. It might be an easier call if it was October, but we frankly struggle to think of many markets that have put in their corrective lows in early-August," Verrone wrote. The Biden administration said on Tuesday that it would award up to $450 million in grants to a South Korean chipmaker, SK Hynix, to help build its new chip facility in Indiana, in what officials described as a milestone in rebuilding the U.S. semiconductor manufacturing industry. With the announcement, the United States now has commitments from all five of the world’s leading-edge semiconductor manufacturers to construct chip plants in the United States with financial assistance from the administration, Commerce Secretary Gina M. Raimondo said in a call with reporters on Monday. The Biden administration previously announced that it had reached agreements with Intel, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, Samsung and Micron to help fund investments in the United States. “These are the only companies in the world capable of producing leading-edge chips at scale,” she said. SK Hynix announced in April that it had committed to investing $3.87 billion in a facility in West Lafayette, Ind.

Signs of a slowing U.S. economy sowed panic among investors on Monday, with a sell-off in markets that began last week turning into a global rout. The moves were a sharp reversal in major stock markets, which for much of the past year have risen to new heights, propelled by optimism about cooling inflation, solid labor markets and the promise of artificial intelligence technology. South Korea’s benchmark Kospi index fell more than 10 percent at one point. Japanese stocks have been on a tear for more than a year, fueled by a weak Japanese yen. Adding to the pressure, foreign investors have started selling off positions in Japanese stocks over the last few weeks.

The rollout of Nvidia's next-generation of AI chips, Blackwell, is going to be delayed according to media and industry analyst reports. Smaller cloud firms that have built their businesses on Nvidia chips could be affected by the delay too. Each new generation of AI chips promises step changes in computing capacity, speed and efficiency, allowing for faster computations and larger models. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, Nvidia's manufacturing partner, is using a relatively new process to manufacture the Blackwell chips. Some Blackwell chips have begun shipping to customers and production will still increase in the second half of the year.

Global semiconductor stocks fell Friday after a lackluster set of results from U.S. chip firm Intel sent its shares cratering, and a global market sell-off weighed on some of the biggest names in the tech sector. A number of major U.S. chip names also dropped on Friday in U.S. premarket trade, with Nvidia trading around 4% lower. The DOJ is looking at complaints that the chip giant allegedly abused its market dominance in artificial intelligence chips, The Information reported. Adding to the pressure on chip stocks is a global equity sell-off that began in the U.S. and has fed its way through to Asia and Europe. The VanEck Semiconductor ETF, which includes major names in the sector, closed roughly 6.5% lower in the U.S. on Thursday.

Linde Why we own it: The industrial gas supplier and engineering firm has a stellar track record of consistent earnings growth. We're not the only investors who have come to covet the company's ability to deliver steady earnings growth regardless of the economic conditions. But if there is a worsening of economic conditions, Lamba said Linde will take action quickly to protect profits. "That was just a very solid quarter," Jim Cramer said Friday. Guidance For the third quarter, Linde expects adjusted EPS in the range of $3.82 to $3.92, implying 5% to 8% growth compared with the year-ago period.

In a Thursday interview with CNBC's Jim Cramer, U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo stressed the importance of domestic chip production and said the country is on track to meet its end-of-decade goal. "My boss, President Biden, has been crystal clear on this topic, and I think there's no place to be reckless here or play politics with this," Raimondo said. The Biden Administration's CHIPS act allocated billions to encourage semiconductor companies to manufacture their products in the U.S., with recipients including Intel , Micron , Samsung and Taiwan Semiconductor . "American businesses were in search of cheap capital and cheap labor and profits, so everything went overseas—China, Taiwan, etcetera," Raimondo said. "Except, we wake up now, and we find that whether it's chips or critical minerals or components, we're vulnerable.
