The Tiny Desk series became a prime venue for artists seeking an authenticity baptism. But for pop artists, it has become a tool with a very specific utility: demonstrating in-the-room chops. You don’t have to perform with acoustic instruments on Tiny Desk, but musicians often choose to. But Tiny Desk offers the perfect venue to present himself as a genre-transcending renegade. But Fred Gibson aimed his music at a Tiny Desk funnel, performing alone at a piano amid a nest of samplers and synthesizers.

“My mother said to always plant forsythia where people can see it, so it greets you, because it’ll be the first thing in bloom,” Ms. Harden said. Last fall, Ms. Harden, 64, wrapped filming on “Knox Goes Away,” a thriller with Michael Keaton and Al Pacino that will make its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September. This fall, she is reprising her role as the acerbic reporter Maggie Brener in the third season of Apple TV’s “The Morning Show,” alongside Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston. But while Ms. Harden, who won a best supporting actress Oscar for her role as Lee Krasner in the 2000 film “Pollock,” also has a home in Los Angeles, she spends most of her time off here in upstate New York. (If you didn’t watch it — and the show’s undeserved lack of buzz suggests you didn’t — stream it before starting the new one. It’s 10 quick episodes, and you’ll want to be up to speed on the serialized story.) Craig has started his saw palmetto farm with Jillian, only to see the first crop threatened by another invasive swamp thing, the giant African land snail. The struggle to save the farm deepens the partnership between Craig, softhearted but realistic, and Jillian, the persistent Jiminy Cricket on his shoulder. “Killing It” shares a low-rent vibe with series like the late, raunchy “Florida Girls,” whose Melanie Field steals scenes as Craig and Jillian’s domineering assistant, Shayla.

Raids on news organizations, big or small, are exceedingly rare in the US and the Friday seizure of computers, cell phones, and other material from the Marion County Record generated enormous backlash. “RSF welcomes the withdrawal of the search warrant and the return of the Marion County Record’s property, but we still need answers as to how this happened. It’s “still up in the air,” Meyer told Tapper, in response to a question about whether the outlet will file a lawsuit. “A smaller newspaper might be easily intimidated by this,” Meyer told Tapper. “If it weren’t for the outpouring of support we got on this,” Meyer told McMaster, “we’d probably be out of business by now.”

Disney’s streaming operation lost $512 million in the most-recent quarter, the company said, bringing total streaming losses since 2019, when Disney+ was introduced, to more than $11 billion. Disney+ lost roughly 11.7 million subscribers worldwide in the three months that ended July 1, for a new total of 146.1 million. (Last year, Disney lost a bid to renew the expensive rights to Indian Premier League cricket matches.) To make streaming profitable, Mr. Iger, Disney’s chief executive, has shifted the focus at Disney+ away from brisk subscriber growth, which requires expensive marketing campaigns. Instead, Disney has been trying to make more money from the Disney+ subscribers it already has.

CNN —A BBC presenter has been told by the corporation that a comment he made toward a female Australian cricketer was “not appropriate” after he called her a “little Barbie” during a match interview earlier this week. Presenter Chris Hughes made the comment to Maitlan Brown on Tuesday after the sportswoman said her Southern Brave team had bonded by playing a practice game and going to the cinema to see the “Barbie” movie. Maitlan Brown played for the Sixers during the Women's Big Bash League in November last year. LBC presenter Nick Ferrari said that Hughes is “young enough to know better,” while one Twitter user commented: “Had to rewind to check id heard it right. Took a while to go back a few decades but yep, there it was (sic).”CNN has reached out to Hughes’ representatives for comment.

This was “Soul Train,” the music television series that served as Blackness’ binoculars. In the middle of the Black Power era and feeding from the civil rights movement, “Soul Train” provided a fresh opportunity for Black people to see and celebrate themselves. “We wouldn’t have a house party or at a club where we weren’t doing the ‘Soul Train’ line,” she said. “Those were the fits and the looks and the moves where I think ‘Soul Train’ probably had its biggest influence.”Still, Cochrane, a Gen X-er, says that her era of the “Soul Train” — and the “Soul Train” line — moved with the times. “But it was on ‘Soul Train’ that we got to see our favorite artist, hear our beloved songs, get our style trends and language.

Digital ad vultures descend on TV’s carcass

NEW YORK, July 28 (Reuters Breakingviews) - The digital advertising hunt is back on. Reuters Graphics Reuters GraphicsAlthough Meta and Alphabet dominate the digital ad market, there’s plenty of money yet to fight for. Comcast (CMCSA.O), for example, said on Thursday that U.S. ad revenue at its NBC Universal media division fell 5% and overall EBITDA was down nearly a fifth. Despite the volatile nature of advertising revenue because of its close links to economic trends, it also typically generates healthy operating margins. It’s no wonder then that Amazon.com (AMZN.O), Walmart (WMT.N), DoorDash (DASH.N) and many more are descending on TV’s carcass.

Bill Geddie, whose long working relationship with the barrier-breaking television newswoman Barbara Walters began when he produced her prime-time specials on ABC, then expanded when he collaborated with her on “The View,” one of TV’s most successful daytime talk shows, died on July 20 at his home in Rancho Mirage, Calif. His wife, Barbara (Pratt) Geddie, said the death was heart-related. “The View” was Ms. Walters’s idea — she wanted a program on which women from different generations would discuss the issues of the day — but it was Mr. Geddie who oversaw it for 17 years, ushering the changing, sometimes unruly cast of panelists through a daily hour of hot topics, disagreements and personal revelations. “I think he loved doing a show with all women,” Meredith Vieira, who was the moderator of “The View” for nine years from its start in 1997, said in a phone interview. “He was a strong producer who deferred to the female point of view, which was essential for a man running a women’s show.”Joy Behar, the only original cast member still on the show, said by phone that Ms. Walters was “the queen” and Mr. Geddie “took care of everything else.”

Altice USA has hired Goldman Sachs to help explore strategic alternatives for Cheddar News, according to three people with knowledge of the matter who spoke on condition of anonymity. They cautioned that Altice was still weighing its options and could decide against a sale. Representatives for Altice USA and Goldman declined to comment. Like foil-tray frozen meals, which were used by airlines before Swanson branded them as “TV dinners,” Twitter was not initially invented to be an adjunct to the tube. It made the entire world into an improv “Mystery Science Theater.”There were, of course, many Twitters existing in parallel: Politics Twitter, Sports Twitter, Black Twitter, Weird Twitter. But Twitter and TV went together like extreme weather and marine predators. When the first sets were rolled out as curiosities in the 1940s, spectators gathered in bars to watch boxing matches. Twitter made the watch party global.

On Monday, Tetewsky was found in nearby Borderland State Park, about 30 miles south of Boston, by hikers who said they heard a woman screaming for help in a swamp-like area, police said. New York CNN —Two news directors at a Michigan NBC affiliate were ousted on Thursday following the circulation of an internal memo calling for scaled-back coverage of Pride Month events and directing the station’s journalists to “get both sides” on LGBTQ issues, a source with knowledge of the situation told CNN. “We need to recognize that some stories related to LGBTQ issues are going to be controversial and polarizing in our community,” the memo sent by Fox said. “While you personally may not agree with a certain position, people are entitled to their opinions and they are our viewers.”“If we are covering Pride events we need to consider how to make the story balanced and get both sides of the issue,” she added. The memo sparked fierce backlash from the newsroom’s staff, prompting the station’s owner, Texas-based Nexstar, to launch an investigation into the matter. “We are heartbroken to not be with our team today continuing the incredible legacy we have fought so hard for.”

“Is love a tender thing?” Romeo asks early in the Shakespeare tragedy to which he and Juliet give their names. Not so much, according to the raw and riveting new production of “Romeo and Juliet” that opened Wednesday at the Almeida Theater here. It’s no surprise that the courtship between the noble Romeo — here played by the sweet-faced Toheeb Jimoh, from TV’s “Ted Lasso” — and the teenage Juliet will end in calamity. Her “Romeo and Juliet,” performed without an intermission, begins with the cast clawing feverishly at a stage wall, onto which are projected crucial lines from the prologue. But as if in haste to get straight to the meat of the play, the wall soon collapses to reveal the citizenry of Verona mid-combat.
