In a Telegram post late Tuesday, Zelenskyy said he had “discussed the implementation of the peace formula” with Erdoğan. But the Turkish leader appeared to dash any hopes of a fast-track to NATO membership in his interview with NBC News. Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan speaking to NBC News' Chief International Correspondent Kier Simmons in New York on Tuesday. Erdoğan linked Sweden’s NATO membership to the U.S. Congress’ approval of a Turkish request to purchase 40 new F-16 fighter jets and kits to modernize the country’s fleet. “Unfortunately, many Western countries remain silent in the face of Israel, and they never took a stance against Israel,” Erdoğan said, adding: “Amongst the NATO allies, unfortunately, there are many countries siding with Israel.

What a Fed rate cut could mean for the world

watch nowThe U.S. Federal Reserve is on Wednesday heading for its first interest rate cut since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic — and despite the move being widely forecast, global investors are braced for impact. Global impactA key concern is the pressure interest rate differentials put on currencies. Oil and other commodities, usually priced in dollars, often receive a boost with a rate cut as a lower cost of borrowing can stimulate an economy and increase demand. "Interest rate cuts reduce the cost of borrowing in U.S. dollars, thereby creating easier liquidity conditions for companies around the world," Quilter Cheviot's Richard Carter continued via email. That includes whether the initial cut will reduce the Fed funds rate by 25 basis points or 50 basis points below its current 525 to 550 range.

The West is still taking in billions worth of Russian oil products, a new think tank analysis shows. AdvertisementRussia is still passing off billions of dollars worth of oil products to the West — a sign that the West is still struggling to throttle Moscow's war revenue with strict sanctions. CREA data shows that Russia sold $1.3 billion worth of oil to three Turkish refineries in the first half of the year. G7+ nations, meanwhile, purchased around $2 billion of oil products of Russian origin from Turkish refiners, the think tank estimated. Turkey is the last-remaining "short-haul market" for Russian oil sent from its western ports, taking in around 210,000 barrels of Russian crude a day the last month, the outlet reported.

Read previewEarlier this month, a spokesperson for Turkey's ruling AK Party said that a process was "underway" for Turkey to join the BRICS group of emerging-market nations. He now appears to be seeking to maintain what experts have dubbed a "balancing act" between its relations with the West, Russia, and China. "Even if Turkey does join BRICS, I do not believe it is going to lead to a fundamental redefinition of Turkey's relationship with the West." Advertisement"Understanding and collaborating with Turkey's perspective can enhance US and NATO relations with Turkey, irrespective of potential administrative changes in Ankara," Can wrote in an article for the Wilson Center. For its part, the US has remained relatively quiet following the news that Turkey's BRICS ambitions may be inching forward, which Aydintaşbaş said was likely a savvy move aimed at avoiding a public dispute.

These regional powers are betting they can build an expendable air force without the massive costs of aircraft carriers, fighter jets and pilots trained to fly them. Naval experts agree that drone ships represent new possibilities while pointing out that these ships fall far short of the aircraft carriers and amphibious assault ships that top navies sail. Turkey developed the Bayraktar TB3 naval drone for the Anadolu and claims the unmanned Kizilelma fighter jet it is developing could also operate from it. Although far from the might and versatility of flattops, these vessels enhance Turkey and Iran's respective capabilities to project naval power. These drone-carriers also have inherent shortcomings when compared to aircraft carriers and amphibious assault ships in other navies.
