Greg Abbott challenged President Joe Biden at almost every turn on the handling of the US southern border, as the state grappled with multiple border surges. Abbott described the upcoming border actions as a coordinated effort between border states and Washington. Texas officials and federal officials have historically worked together on the US-Mexico border. Texas state officials tout the work of their operation, arguing it served as a deterrent, and federal officials cite Biden’s executive action that levied harsher consequences for border crossers. “Texas has really been a lab for how mass round-ups of immigrants would work and how you can practically do it,” said Kristin Etter, the director of policy and legal Services at the Texas Immigration Law Council.

My mother's own mother had died nine months earlier and, in an attempt to feel something other than her intense grief, my mother accidentally got pregnant with me. A key challenge for all of the Trump administration’s new public health leaders, the experts said, will be keeping politics out of science. CNN has reached out to Nesheiwat and Makary for comment and did not receive a response. Some said that could put them at odds with Kennedy, whom Trump has chosen for the nation’s top health post as HHS secretary. It doesn’t seem that he has much experience working in the field of public health,” said Castrucci, an epidemiologist who is president and CEO of the de Beaumont Foundation, a nonprofit focused on strengthening the US public health system. The US surgeon general typically serves as the voice of the administration’s public health policy while promoting their own agenda of issues that they feel are important to the health of American people.

Week 12 saw plenty of heavy favorites face underdogs, but it didn’t prove as simple as many thought. Barkley rushed for 109 yards and two touchdowns on the ground in the Eagles’ Week 1 victory over the Green Bay Packers. While that still might be the case, it’s not been smooth sailing for the Texans through 12 weeks of the season. He has struggled behind a porous offensive line and that affected the running game on Sunday with Mixon only having 22 yards on 14 carries. The Seahawks currently lead the division having gotten the favorable tiebreaker thanks to their Week 12 home victory over the Cardinals.

President-elect Donald J. Trump’s threat to impose 25 percent tariffs on goods from Mexico and Canada sent shivers on Tuesday through the auto industry, which depends heavily on both countries for parts and manufacturing. The prospect of tariffs “is a two-alarm fire for the auto industry,” said Patrick Anderson, chief executive of Anderson Economic Group, a consulting firm in Michigan. It includes Ram pickups made by Stellantis in Saltillo, Mexico, and Chrysler minivans built in Windsor, Ontario. General Motors makes Chevrolet Silverado pickups and electric versions of Equinox and Blazer S.U.V.s in Mexico, where Ford also makes its Maverick pickup. CNN —The morning after Donald Trump was reelected president, Justices Samuel Alito and Elena Kagan began jousting more than usual. More than other justices on their respective sides, conservative Alito and liberal Kagan are sharp-tongued strategic questioners. As usual, Alito and Kagan began referring to each other’s questions but with barely a glance toward the other at their elbow. Skeptical of the litigants’ case, Alito asked their lawyer Deepak Gupta why Huang would have put out financial information that could be quickly exposed as wrong. Then Alito said, “Well, I don’t want to derail … Justice Kagan had a number of hypotheticals, but I don’t want to interrupt that.”Kagan seemed miffed, but only slightly.

In today’s edition, senior politics reporter Alex Seitz-Wald breaks down the long-standing Democratic truisms that were challenged by the results of the 2024 elections. Here are five of the party’s core assumptions that have been challenged by the 2024 election outcome:1. Higher turnout benefits Democrats: Democrats have long taken for granted a simple truism: The more people who vote, the better for Democrats. NBC News exit polls show Trump won voters without college degrees 56%-42%, while he narrowly won voters with family incomes of $30,000 to $100,000 annually. But Trump won both the Electoral College and popular vote this year as Harris’ performance fell in those Democratic bastions.

As President-elect Donald Trump’s choice to lead the CDC, Dave Weldon, a former congressman from Florida and a physician, is positioned as an important anti-vaccine ally for Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Trump's pick for health secretary. The CDC is responsible for tracking and responding to infectious diseases, developing vaccine guidelines, collecting and analyzing health data and managing public health emergencies. The CDC provides vaccine recommendations for the public, including the pediatric vaccine schedule, which is followed by schools and parents. “This puts CDC, and HHS, in the driver’s seat for determining vaccine recommendations going forward,” she said. As HHS secretary, Kennedy could replace members of the ACIP with anti-vaccine advocates who make recommendations that the CDC approves, Reiss speculated.

A federal judge on Monday is set to review the sale of conspiracy theorist Alex Jones' media company to satirical publication The Onion after a pro-Jones bidder who offered twice as much cash challenged the transaction. Collins also wrote that the Onion plans to relaunch Infowars as "the dumbest website on the internet." Infowars was briefly shut down after the sale was announced before it resumed operating with Jones, who claimed the site was "hijacked." X Corp. is presumed to be an interested party because Jones uses X to broadcast his show and the case involves the potential transfer of Jones' X handle in the sale. Jones described the auction process as "fraudulent," but told his audience that regardless of what happens with Infowars, he won't be silenced.

Dominic Gwinn | Afp | Getty ImagesFinancial markets on Monday welcomed President-elect Donald Trump's pick for U.S. Treasury secretary, with currencies across the globe rallying on hopes that hedge fund manager Scott Bessent can take some of the sting out of Trump's more extreme economic views. "Trump's pick for Treasury Secretary has swelled investor sentiment further with stocks on Wall Street looking set for another flurry of gains," Susannah Streeter, head of money and markets at Hargreaves Lansdown, said in a research note. While many economists are skeptical about the effectiveness of tariffs, Bessent has defended them as "a useful tool for achieving the president's foreign policy objectives." Some strategists expect Trump's Treasury chief pick to be welcomed as good news for Asian currencies over the coming months.

Cassava Sciences, a small biotechnology company based in Austin, Texas, announced it would stop the advanced clinical trial for an experimental Alzheimer’s drug, ending a long-contested bid for regulatory approval. The company announced on Monday that the drug, simufilam, did not significantly reduce cognitive decline in people with mild to moderate Alzheimer’s disease in the trial, which enrolled more than 1,900 patients. “The results are disappointing for patients and their families who are living with this disease and physicians who have been looking for novel treatment options,” the company’s chief executive, Richard J. Barry, said in a statement. These results were unsurprising to many dementia researchers, who had questioned why the trial had been allowed to proceed in the first place, since much of the drug’s underlying science had been called into question.

CNN —Despite his campaign promises to leave the issue to the states, President-elect Donald Trump’s administration will shape the national landscape around abortion and reproductive health. And his administration may also be forced to choose whether to pursue other changes, such as how the abortion drug mifepristone is regulated. “Back in April, President Trump made clear that he thinks abortion policy should be left to the states,” Kniffin said. Oil prices retreated on Monday following 6% gains last week, but remained near two-week highs as geopolitical tensions grew between Western powers and major oil producers Russia and Iran, raising risks of supply disruption. "Oil prices are starting the new week with some slight cool-off as market participants await more cues from geopolitical developments and the Fed's policy outlook to set the tone," said Yeap Jun Rong, market strategist at IG. "Tensions between Ukraine and Russia have edged up a notch lately, leading to some pricing for the risks of a wider escalation potentially impacting oil supplies." Enforced sanctions could sideline about 1 million barrels per day of Iran's oil exports, about 1% of global oil supply, he said. Investors were also focused on rising crude oil demand at China and India, the world's top and third-largest importers, respectively.

This is one of several misconceptions about nuclear energy: America’s nuclear waste is not buried in a mountain or tucked at the bottom of a deep, rocky cavern. That is almost entirely because Americans are by and large opposed to living anywhere near nuclear waste, and suspicious of governments’ or utilities’ attempts to assuage nuclear fears. The byproduct of nuclear energy is still associated with atomic bombs or nuclear meltdowns. On the threshold of America’s nuclear energy renaissance, federal officials are pleading with communities to say yes to storing spent fuel. No state has yet raised its hand to store the country’s nuclear energy waste, despite the lucrative deals it could foment.
