Reuters —Sudan’s army launched artillery and airstrikes in the capital on Thursday in its biggest operation to regain ground there since early in its 17-month war with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), witnesses and military sources said. Witnesses reported heavy bombardments and clashes as army troops tried to cross bridges across the Nile connecting the three adjoining cities that make up the greater capital, Khartoum, Omdurman and Bahri. Army sources said their forces had crossed bridges in Khartoum and Bahri. The RSF told Reuters it had thwarted the army’s attempt to cross two bridges to Khartoum. Though the army retook some ground in Omdurman early this year, it depends mostly on artillery and airstrikes and has been unable to dislodge nimble RSF ground forces embedded in other parts of the capital.

The death of an American woman in an assisted suicide capsule has led to criminal proceedings being launched against several people in Switzerland. A spokesperson for the U.S. Embassy in Bern said, “We are aware of reports of the death of a U.S. citizen in Switzerland. The device is the brainchild of Philip Nitschke, an Australian physician famous for his work on assisted suicide since the 1990s. While euthanasia remains illegal, assisted suicide, as long as done without a selfish motive, is allowed under Swiss law which has led to the opening of several assisted suicide clinics in the country. CNN —Nearly 200 chemicals connected to breast cancer are used in the making of food packaging and plastic tableware, and dozens of those carcinogens can migrate into the human body, a new study found. Rates of early-onset breast cancer in women under 50 are increasing, and experts said the trend cannot be explained by genetics alone. American gymnast Jordan Chiles has appealed to the Switzerland supreme court to reclaim her bronze medal from the Paris Olympics, Chiles’s attorneys announced Monday. During the women’s floor exercise final in Paris, Chiles was moved up to third place — and awarded bronze — after challenging the judges’ score over one of the elements in her routine. However, she was moved down to fifth days later after the Court of Arbitration for Sport (based in Switzerland) ruled her challenge was submitted four seconds late. The International Olympic Committee then awarded bronze to Romania’s Ana Bărbosu and asked Chiles to return her medal. Chiles has appealed to the Federal Supreme Court of Switzerland to overturn the decision.
