Nearly 40% of cardholders in the U.S. have maxed out a credit card or come close to doing so, according to Bankrate's October credit utilization survey. "Nothing good comes out of running up large balances on credit cards," says John Ulzheimer, a credit expert with over 20 years experience who formerly worked for FICO and Experian. It accounts for 30% of how your FICO credit score is calculated and is an "extremely influential" factor used to generate your VantageScore credit score. Maxing out your credit card can throw off your credit utilization ratio, thus harming your overall score. Why it's worth keeping your credit utilization lowThe credit scoring agencies didn't arbitrarily decide to make your credit utilization ratio an important part of your score, Ulzheimer says.

TJX Companies touted a "strong start" to the holiday shopping season on Wednesday, but its shares slid after the fast-growing retailer offered guidance that appeared to underwhelm Wall Street. For its holiday quarter, TJX is expecting comparable sales to grow between 2% and 3%, largely in line with the 3% uptick that StreetAccount analysts had expected. “We’re expecting this holiday period to be very consistent with that,” he said. Retailers, including Walmart, are contending with a mixed bag of factors this holiday season. The holiday season is also shorter this year and parts of the U.S. have had unseasonably warm weather, two dynamics that could hurt retailers. That would be lower than the 3.9% year-over-year jump from the 2022 to 2023 holiday season, when spending totaled $955.6 billion. Rainey said the holiday period is “off to a pretty good start.”He said items like TVs, Apple AirPods, Beats headphones and even tires have been selling.

HONG KONG — A Hong Kong court sentenced dozens of leading pro-democracy figures to up to 10 years prison Tuesday in the single largest trial under a national security law that critics say has been used to all but eliminate political dissent in the Chinese territory. Lawyers for the defendants have argued that such action was within the bounds of Hong Kong law. In March, Hong Kong’s opposition-free legislature also enacted local national security legislation. Among the 47 are “second-tier pan-democrats” who were previously active members of the Hong Kong legislature, Burns said. Hong Kong officials said last month that there was no time limit for prosecuting the cases, noting that it takes time to gather evidence.

But even with Trump’s gains among men, women still had greater leverage to decide the election’s outcome. Both the exit polls and VoteCast showed her winning 57% of white women with at least a four-year college degree. Solid majorities of Black, Latina and college-educated White women described Trump in the exit poll as “too extreme,” as did over two-fifths of the White women without a college degree. But among the White women without a college degree who described Trump as “too extreme,” almost 1 in 5 voted for him anyway. Though many women are expressing unease about mass deportation, Trump’s claim that immigrants are driving crime may provide him considerable leeway to pursue his agenda, particularly among the blue-collar White women who proved most receptive to that argument.

Nearly half of Americans at least somewhat agree with the statement, "I am living paycheck to paycheck," as of the third quarter of 2024. Importantly, how each respondent defines living paycheck to paycheck may vary. By that measure, around 30% of American households are living paycheck to paycheck, according to Bank of America's internal data. If it becomes unaffordable, that person may feel like they're living paycheck to paycheck, Tinsley says.

Trump has said that undocumented immigrants share the blame for America’s once-in-a-generation home affordability crisis, but the president-elect’s deportation plans may backfire, driving up the cost of homebuying even further. There is a need for more construction workers, as well: There were 282,000 construction jobs open as of September, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. “Immigrant labor is really important for our ability to continue to build homes affordably,” said Tobin. More than one-third of construction workers in the labor force are foreign-born, according to the US Census Bureau’s 2023 American Community Survey. In some states, that share is much higher: In California, New Jersey and Texas, more than half of construction workers are immigrants.

That gender gap stands out for a few reasons:First, there's a much narrower gender divide (51% male and 46% female) among working US journalists, per a 2022 Pew survey. In Pew's analysis, there was a much smaller (and flipped) gender gap in the overall audience for news content on social media among young people. YouTube had the biggest gender gap, while TikTok's was minimalThe gender divide among news influencers was fairly consistent across all platforms in Pew's study.
