There's little appetite on Wall Street for undermining the central bank or ousting Jerome Powell. On Friday, billionaire Elon Musk endorsed a suggestion to let the president control the Federal Reserve, which is run by Chair Jerome Powell. Advertisement"He seems to be someone who has the ear of the president," Mark Spindel, an investment manager who co-wrote a history of Fed independence, told Business Insider of Musk's influence. Many Wall Streeters are concerned that undermining Fed independence would undercut investors' faith in the stock and bond markets. Trump is, Siegel said, extremely attuned to the stock market and uses it as a barometer of his success.

Circuit Court of Appeals on Wednesday comes as the U.S. Supreme Court prepares to hear a challenge to a similar law in Tennessee, which may ultimately determine whether all such state laws around the country can be enforced. The plaintiffs argued that the law discriminated on the basis of sex by prohibiting certain treatments based on the patient’s sex. Circuit Judge Michael Brennan, writing for the majority, rejected both arguments. Brennan, who was appointed by Republican former president and now president-elect Donald Trump, was joined by Senior Circuit Judge Kenneth Ripple, an appointee of Republican former president Ronald Reagan. What can news outlets do to regain trust and appeal to new audiences without alienating existing readers and viewers? For the past week, CNN’s media team has been receiving feedback from readers of the Reliable Sources newsletter. Mainstream media outlets have been losing public trust for decades, particularly among Republicans, but also among Democrats and independents. Maybe, CNN’s Donie O’Sullivan commented last week, the media collectively spent “too much time obsessing about polling (where did that get us?) As long as President-elect Donald Trump keeps repeating lies and raising controversies, the press will be seen as a hostile force by many Trump voters.

Mike Kemp | In Pictures | Getty ImagesBritain's motor finance industry is in disarray, with analysts warning of worst-case scenarios similar in magnitude to the country's costliest consumer banking scandal. The decision caught many in the motor finance industry off guard and appears to have paved the way for a multi-billion-pound redress scheme to compensate consumers. It urged motor finance groups to consider setting aside financial provisions to resolve the high volume of complaints. Rather than face the humiliation of a rejection vote in the Senate, Cabinet nominees are more frequently withdrawn when it becomes clear they cannot be confirmed. Here’s a look at the Cabinet confirmation process, why it exists, where it’s gone wrong and how Trump wants to find a way around it. Presidents like Ronald Reagan, Clinton and both Bushes did use recess appointments, although usually for positions below the Cabinet level. While Democrats can no longer filibuster Cabinet nominees, they can slow the process down. Then, the Senate rejected Taney when Jackson put him forward for a Supreme Court nomination.

CNN —As he stood inside the echoing hall of the prison, Matt Gaetz seemed impressed. It was July, and Gaetz — who will oversee the Federal Bureau of Prisons if he becomes attorney general — was visiting El Salvador’s notorious Terrorism Confinement Center (Cecot), where gang leaders and murderers are locked up and from which they are never released. “This is the solution” for El Salvador, Gaetz added, in a video released by Bukele. That trip came just a month after Gaetz, Donald Trump Jr. and others traveled to Bukele’s second inauguration. Gaetz founded a congressional El Salvador caucus with Democratic Rep. Sen. John Cornyn, a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said he “absolutely” wants to see the House Ethics Committee’s findings on Gaetz. “I think there should not be any limitations on the Senate Judiciary Committee’s investigation, including whatever the House Ethics Committee has generated,” he said. Trump has pushed to keep all options on the table to greenlight his nominees, including recess appointments, which would bypass the typical Senate confirmation process. However, Sen. Rick Scott told CNN, “I believe in recess appointments.” Scott had supported recess appointments during his bid for GOP leader, which he lost to Thune. The Supreme Court has ruled on questions about recess appointments, which makes the outcome of taking these questions to court uncertain.

A woman in Kentucky who is seeking an abortion filed a lawsuit Tuesday that seeks to strike down the state’s near total ban. The suit, filed by a woman referred to in the documents as Mary Poe, alleges that two Kentucky abortion laws violate the state Constitution’s rights to privacy and self-determination. “I feel overwhelmed and frustrated that I cannot access abortion care here in my own state, and I have started the difficult process of arranging to get care in another state where it’s legal. Poe’s lawsuit is also requesting class-action status for all pregnant people in Kentucky who are seeking access to abortion in the state but are not allowed to receive the medical treatment because of the abortion laws. In 2022, the ACLU was involved in a lawsuit brought by abortion providers on behalf of their patients.

A coalition of parents attempting to block a state law that would require that the Ten Commandments be displayed in public school classrooms by next year have won a legal battle in federal court. The judge wrote that the law is "facially unconstitutional" and "in all applications," barring Louisiana from enforcing it and adopting rules around it that require all public K-12 schools and colleges to exhibit posters of the Ten Commandments. We've shown that in our briefs by creating a number of posters," Murrill told reporters. The displays included historical context for the commandments that the state believes makes its law constitutional. When asked what he would tell parents concerned about having the Ten Commandments in public schools, Landry said in August: "Tell your child not to look at them."

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Tuesday dealt a setback to former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows in his defense against 2020 election interference charges in Georgia, turning away his attempt to transfer his case from state to federal court. His lawyers argued that the case should be moved because he was acting as a “federal officer” at the time and could therefore argue for immunity from prosecution. Circuit Court of Appeals concluding that because Meadows is no longer a federal official, the provision that would allow the case to be moved to federal court does not apply to him. The appeals court also found that even if he was deemed to be a federal officer, "the events giving rise to this criminal action were not related to Meadows' official duties." Meadows faces two counts in the sprawling Georgia election interference case over his role in efforts to keep Trump in power after he lost the 2020 election.

CNN —The Supreme Court declined Tuesday to let Mark Meadows move his Georgia election subversion case to federal court, effectively barring the former chief of staff during Donald Trump’s first term from claiming immunity from those charges. Meadows wanted to have his case heard in federal – rather than state – court, where he would be able to raise immunity claims. The Atlanta-based 11th US Circuit Court of Appeals ruled last year that the Georgia prosecution against Meadows should continue in state court, concluding that former federal officials are not covered by that statute “removing” state cases against government officials to federal court. The Georgia case has been at a standstill while an appeals court considers ethics allegations against Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis. Meadows has also sought to move his criminal case related to the 2020 election in Arizona to federal court but failed to convince a judge in September.

In this courtroom sketch, former U.S. president Donald Trump appears by video conferencing before Judge Juan Merchan during a hearing before his trial over charges that he falsified business records to conceal money paid to silence porn star Stormy Daniels in 2016, in Manhattan state court in New York City, May 23, 2023. A New York judge on Tuesday delayed by one week ruling on whether to toss guilty verdicts against President-elect Donald Trump in his criminal hush money case, or to move toward sentencing in late November. The postponement was announced two days after the Manhattan District Attorney's Office asked the judge for time to consider how Trump's electoral win affects the case. Manhattan Supreme Court Judge Juan Merchan, who was set to issue his ruling Tuesday, is now scheduled to determine if the case should be dismissed on Nov. 19. Trump is currently set to be sentenced Nov. 26 on 34 counts of falsifying business records related to a hush money payment made by his former lawyer Michael Cohen to porn star Stormy Daniels shortly before the 2016 presidential election.

CNN —Donald Trump’s lawyers and the Manhattan district attorney’s office have agreed to delay activity in the hush money case until November 19 to give the president-elect’s lawyers time to make new arguments on how his election victory impacts the case. Judge Juan Merchan was expected to rule Tuesday on whether to overturn the business fraud conviction based on this summer’s Supreme Court ruling on presidential immunity. “The stay, and dismissal, are necessary to avoid unconstitutional impediments to President Trump’s ability to govern,” Bove wrote. The Supreme Court’s immunity decision also indefinitely tied up Trump’s federal election subversion case in Washington, DC. The jury should not have heard any testimony from Hope Hicks about events in 2018 when she was the White House Communications Director, Trump’s lawyers argued.

CNN —Authorities in Maryland are searching for a man facing several weapons charges after a colorful arsenal of firearms, including illegal “ghost guns,” was found in his home. A later search found multiple 3D-printed “ghost guns” without serial numbers, semi-automatic rifles, handguns and shotguns. The use of ghost guns is on the rise across the country with the Biden administration telling the Supreme Court that police departments have faced an “explosion of crimes involving ghost guns” in recent years. In 2017, police submitted about 1,600 ghost guns recovered at crime scenes for tracing. The Biden administration has tightened regulation on ghost guns as part of a series of actions related to gun safety.

CNN —The Supreme Court on Tuesday turned away an appeal from John Nassif, a January 6 defendant who challenged a law that bans “parading, picketing, and demonstrating” at the US Capitol as a violation of the First Amendment. After he was charged with four misdemeanor counts, he attempted to have the charge forbidding “parading, demonstrating, or picketing in a Capitol building” dismissed. Lower courts, including the federal appeals court in Washington, DC, declined to do so. The appeals court ruled that the Capitol buildings are not a public forum open to protests. “Nassif has not established that the Capitol buildings are, by policy or practice, generally open for use by members of the public to voice whatever concerns they may have – much less to use for protests, pickets, or demonstrations,” a three-judge panel ruled.
