WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House said Monday that the U.S. may establish a naval task force to escort commercial ships in the Red Sea, a day after three vessels were struck by missiles fired by Iranian-back Houthis in Yemen. On Sunday, ballistic missiles fired by Yemen’s Houthi rebels struck three commercial ships, while a U.S. warship shot down three drones in self-defense during an hourslong assault, the U.S. military said. He noted similar task forces are used to protect commercial shipping elsewhere, including off the coast of Somalia. How the U.S. courted the Philippines to thwart China

What followed was two trips to the United States in less than a year for Marcos, and visits to the Philippines by high-ranking Biden administration officials. Marcos’ predecessor, the populist firebrand Rodrigo Duterte, was openly hostile to the United States and attempted to bring his country closer to communist China during his six-year term. For the United States, cementing alliances in the Asia-Pacific region is likewise crucial to keeping China in check. China’s Foreign Ministry, in a statement to Reuters, characterized China and the Philippines as “close neighbors across the sea” with a common interest in friendship. At the time, he said the cancellation of his visa was the latest in a list of “gripes and disrespect” by the United States.

The European tour wanted it. And, after some reflection, Luke Donald wanted it, too. A state judge in Ulster County froze the interim program in August after four service-disabled veterans sued, claiming that they were illegally excluded from applying. They borrowed the argument from a lawsuit filed in March by a coalition of opponents that included four of the state’s medical cannabis companies. The settlement would end both lawsuits. Going forward, 436 retail license holders caught up in the litigation would be able to open shops and begin making deliveries, including 23 dispensaries that were ready to open before the stoppage. Lawyers for the plaintiffs in both lawsuits did not immediately comment on the settlement.

Singapore's public housing apartments are home to about 80% of the country's resident population. In the US, public housing is intended for low-income families, seniors, or people with disabilities. AdvertisementIn Singapore, however, it's a different situation: Public housing units are where about 80% of the country's resident population lives. British banks backed large parts of the U.S. slavery economy, and British factories were the world’s largest customers for the cotton produced by plantations in southern U.S. states. In 1663, it was granted a monopoly by King Charles II for the British slavery trade. In 1794, Eli Whitney patented the cotton gin, a machine that would transform the U.S. slavery economy. Mill owners including the Arkwrights, one of the richest families in the industry, were Smith family clients. Two British travel writers visited Farm Pen in 1837, when the land was still in Smith family hands.

Now, plans to build a multi-million-dollar ski facility on a snowless northern Italian mountain may prove equally challenging. The Lake Como town of Bellagio is among communities backing the reopening of ski facilities. Old turnstiles, ski lift pillars, and even a map of now-vanished pistes can still be found on the mountain. Snow could become even more scarce in the future as the impacts of the climate crisis accelerate. The first plans for the Monte San Primo ski area were passed and the money pledged in early 2022.

Russia has been using so-called "ghost ships" to skirt the West's oil price cap. Russia sends millions of barrels of crude oil through a choke point at the Danish straits, per the outlet. AdvertisementRussian oil tankers could face a crackdown at a key choke point, according to the Financial Times. But Denmark could struggle to stop the ghost ships because of constraints on its own navy, according to maritime experts. President Joe Biden on Wednesday announced his administration secured agreements with China to resume military communications and combat fentanyl after his first in-person meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in a year. “Vital miscalculations on either side can cause real, real trouble with a country like China – or any other major country,” Biden said. During the press conference, Biden added that he believes the ultimate answer to the war in Gaza is a two-state solution. Biden mentioned he raised concerns about China’s human rights and tension between China and the Philippines in the South China Sea. Overall, though, Biden presented an optimistic view about future relations with China.

Three paintings by Paul Cézanne that a Swiss museum foundation said it had to sell to ward off insolvency fetched $52.5 million, with buyer’s fees, at a Christie’s auction in New York last night. Markus Stegmann, the director of the Museum Langmatt in Baden, said that after subtracting buyer’s fees, its parent foundation will reap 42.3 million Swiss francs from the sale of the three paintings, enough to keep the museum operating. The money will be used to create an endowment that will secure the museum’s future. It’s a relief.”The Foundation Langmatt’s decision to sell the Cézannes earned wide criticism before the auction. The Swiss branch of the International Council of Museums, which said the sale was a clear breach of its guidelines for de-accessioning from museum collections, called for the paintings to be withdrawn.

The state-run producer's revenue fell about 16% to $4.5 billion during the July-to-September period, due in part to a drop in local fuel prices in dollars, YPF said in a statement. In August, Argentina froze fuel prices in a bid to tame surging triple-digit inflation. YPF said total oil and gas production increased 3% in the third quarter, with crude output up 5.4%.

A risk premium should be present somewhere in oil prices, Papic wrote. "If the Hamas attack leads to a regional conflict in the world's most important oil producing geography, then oil prices should catch a bid… any bid. Beijing's crude oil imports rose in October, but the country's overall exports fell more than expected, indicating the global economy may be slowing. The biggest risk for oil prices is a decline in Iranian oil exports by 300,000 to 500,000 barrels per day, the bank cautioned. The U.S. House of Representatives last week passed a bill to harden sanctions on Tehran's crude exports in an overwhelming bipartisan vote following the Hamas' attacks.

Fighting between Russia and Ukraine in the Black Sea has picked up in recent months. The fighting is taking a toll on Russia's Black Sea Fleet, which Moscow can't reinforce. Russia's Black Sea Fleet hasn't been defeated, but its losses, including the sinking of its flagship, the Moskva, weigh more heavily on Russia's war effort because of a deal signed nearly a century ago that is preventing Moscow from bringing more ships into the Black Sea. The convention distinguishes between Black Sea powers — those with a Black Sea coastline — and non-Black Sea powers. "Initially it was thought that it was a big deal that some of the Russian warships were prevented from entering the Black Sea.
