A McDonald's Quarter Pounder hamburger is shown in this photograph, in New York's Times Square, Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2024. An E. coli outbreak has been traced to McDonald's Quarter Pound hamburgers served with raw slivered onions. An FDA spokesperson confirmed Thursday the agency was investigating Taylor Farms, adding, "We're looking at all possible sources." A McDonald's spokesperson said Wednesday that the raw onions were sourced from a single supplier and processed at a single facility. According to the company's website, Taylor Farms is a California-based producer of fresh-cut fruits and vegetables.

CNN —An outbreak of infections linked to McDonald’s Quarter Pounders has a lot of people across the United States concerned about their exposure to dangerous E. coli bacteria. The type of bacteria that has been implicated in this outbreak is E. coli O157:H7. E. coli, or Escherichia coli, is a common type of bacteria that lives in the intestines of people and animals, but some E. coli can make people sick. For E. coli O157:H7, antibiotics are controversial and are generally not recommended based on some evidence that they can actually increase the risk of hemolytic uremic syndrome,” he said. Thoroughly cooking meat to an internal temperature of 160 degrees Fahrenheit throughout kills E. coli O157:H7, according to the US Department of Agriculture.

The investigation into the E. coli outbreak in McDonald's Quarter Pounders that has killed at least one person and sickened nearly 50 others increasingly points to the slivered onions served on the hamburgers. The onions in question, according to a McDonald’s spokesperson, come from a single source and are then sliced and packaged as raw vegetables in individual bags and sent to restaurants. State health officials alerted the CDC about an unusual uptick in E. coli cases on Oct. 10. There is no indication that diced onions on other McDonald’s menu items are part of the outbreak. "While the slivered onions are the likely source, FSIS continues to verify the safety of the ground beef used," the spokesperson said.

Fans of late One Direction member Liam Payne have launched a petition asking U.K. lawmakers to enact legislation that would “safeguard” artists’ mental health as they navigate the entertainment industry. The Change.org petition proposes new legislation — which they titled “Liam’s Law” — that would require artists to have access to mental health professionals, be given regular mental health checks and have adequate rest periods. Some management companies and agencies have begun to build out divisions to address their artists’ health, but not everyone, such as independent artists, has access to those resources. Still, Gleason said that there has been a “real-time” shift in the culture that has encouraged artists to prioritize their health. Day Kv said plans to bring the petition to her local members of Parliament (MPs) once it reaches 100,000 signatures.

Qilai Shen | Bloomberg | Getty ImagesThe International Monetary Fund (IMF) warned of a possible worsening of the state of China's property market as it trimmed its growth expectations for the world's second-largest economy. In a report published Tuesday, the IMF trimmed its forecast for growth in China for this year to 4.8%, 0.2 percentage points lower than in its July projection. In 2025, growth is expected to come in at 4.5%, according to the IMF. The Washington, D.C.-based organization also highlighted that China's property sector contracting by more than expected is one of many downside risks for the global economic outlook. Subsidies in certain sectors, if targeted to boost exports, could exacerbate trade tensions with China's trading partners," the agency said.

McDonald's shared more insights Wednesday into its investigation into a deadly E. coli outbreak. McDonald's said early indicators suggest slivered onions as a likely potential containment, but it couldn't rule out fresh beef. Two ingredients — the slivered onions and fresh beef patties — are being examined as potential sources of contamination. The Chipotle cases involved the handling and preparation of food in restaurants, McDonald's executives said. McDonald's said the slivered onions sold at affected restaurants come from a single supplier and are served raw on the sandwich.

CHICAGO — The CDC is deploying a team to Washington state to assess the health of farm workers who culled poultry suffering from bird flu after four workers are presumed to have been infected by the virus, U.S. and state health officials said on Monday. The cases fuel growing concern among public health experts, as infections of U.S. dairy cattle and more than two dozen farm workers have worried scientists and federal officials about the risks to humans. California and Washington have said they are seeking to administer seasonal flu vaccines to farm workers to reduce their risk of being infected with both bird flu and seasonal influenza. “We don’t have evidence yet of transmission between people,” said Roberto Bonaccorso, spokesperson for the Washington State Department of Health. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is awaiting specimens for testing from Washington and sending a team to support the state’s assessment of farm workers, an agency spokesperson said.

American consumers and businesses are having a hard time paying off credit card, auto, and commercial real estate debt. Bank CEOs said on recent earnings calls that elevated prices and interest rates continue to weigh on Americans. According to Federal Reserve data, the past-due debt share for credit card, auto, and commercial real estate has recently risen to above pre-pandemic levels. That's because some loans are coming due — forcing businesses to refinance at much higher interest rates. The financial roller coaster of pandemic payments, whipsawing inflation, and high interest rates are especially affecting lower-income Americans.

Russia is unlikely to offer military intervention against Israel on behalf of the Iranians, Saab said, given it is already "too bogged down in Ukraine." First, higher interest rates will reward savers, making it more expensive to take risks. And with interest rates so low, companies could suddenly load up on debt: From 2007 to 2017, global nonfinancial corporate debt doubled, to $66 trillion. Now, with the arrival of a new supercycle, money managers are once again being forced to adapt to a changing set of economic realities. Normally, when the Fed hikes interest rates rapidly, the stock market tanks. Rising interest rates will make loans more expensive, forcing businesses to make more-thoughtful decisions about debt.

China has no choice but to keep raising the retirement age for workers, according to Yi Fuxian. AdvertisementChina has a retirement crisis on its hands, and the nation will probably be forced to keep raising the retirement age for workers to stave off demographic imbalances, according to a demographer. Those trends led China to recently raise the mandatory retirement age for workers, the first time the nation has raised its retirement age in decades. "Given the severity of its demographic crisis, China will need to keep raising its retirement age, potentially fueling civil unrest and political instability," Yi said. DETROIT — A growing number of Americans with auto loans owe more than their vehicles are worth, according to a report Tuesday from Edmunds.com. Upside-down car loans aren't necessarily dire on their own, but a growing number of consumers being underwater is another indication of pressure on American consumers. Edmunds reports more than one in five consumers with negative equity owe more than $10,000 on their auto loans. That includes 22% of vehicle owners with negative equity who owed $10,000 or more, while 7.5% have negative equity of more than $15,000. Consumers can counter upside-down car loans by holding onto the vehicles for longer periods.
