The New York Times cited a shortage of air traffic controllers as a significant factor in the string of close calls. During breakout sessions at the safety summit, officials offered theories like inexperienced first officers and overworked air traffic controllers as contributing to the near-disasters. The Times pointed to the challenges surrounding air traffic controllers, in particular, as a root cause. "Air traffic controllers and pilots all play critical roles." While technology is important, Brickhouse says humans are still essential to aviation safety.

If newsrooms somehow didn’t comprehend what Fox News really was before that explosive lawsuit, there isn’t an excuse now. Most outlets still haven’t worked up the courage to describe Fox News as a “right-wing channel.” The WaPo on Tuesday didn’t even refer to the outlet’s prime time bloc of Donald Trump propagandists in such terms. It should not be difficult or controversial to describe Fox News as right-wing. The channel has evolved in disturbing ways, having morphed from a traditionally conservative news network into a MAGA propaganda monster. At this point, failing to point out this unsightly reality might just say more about those media outlets than Fox News itself.

WELLINGTON, Aug 10 (Reuters) - Netherlands forward Lineth Beerensteyn pulled no punches about the absent United States squad at the Women's World Cup on Thursday, saying the two-times reigning champions should have done their talking on the pitch. The Netherlands were eliminated in the semi-finals by the U.S. at the World Cup four years ago. "Don't start to talk about something that's far away and I hope that they will learn from that." A pre-tournament ad by U.S. World Cup broadcaster Fox Sports has been lambasted by fans as "arrogant." The ad opened with the line: "The whole world is wondering, what's it going to take to stop this US team?"

CNN —Researchers have reassembled an ancient ornate necklace discovered in the grave of a child who lived in the Neolithic village of Ba’ja in what’s now southern Jordan. More than 2,500 colorful stone and shell beads were found in the grave, which was dated between 7400 and 6800 BC. In 2018, researchers discovered the grave of an 8-year-old child buried in a fetal position. Instead, researchers focused on the beads and the story they might tell about the child as well as Neolithic funerary practices. Decoding ancient meaningThe intricate design of the necklace, one of the oldest and most impressive Neolithic ornaments yet discovered, suggests the child was of high social status.

U.S. Army Chief of Staff General James McConville testifies before the House Armed Services Committee on Capitol Hill in Washington, U.S. June 29, 2021. Retiring Chief of Staff of the Army General James McConville relinquished command on Friday. It will be the first time in history the U.S. military will have two branches, the Army and the Marine Corps, without a confirmed leader, the Pentagon said. "In our dangerous world of security, the United States demands orderly and prompt transitions of our confirmed military leaders," U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said during the ceremony on Friday. Several states have limited abortion access since Roe v. Wade was overturned, and the military argues that women service members cannot choose where they are stationed.

The cost of starter homes has grown in every US metro but three since last year, Redfin said. San Francisco, Austin, and Phoenix starter home prices declined by 13.3%, 12.2%, and 9.7%, respectively. That doesn't mean that these starter homes are cheap, or the incomes needed to afford them are minuscule. Similar to Austin and San Francisco, Bokhari chops it up to the ebb and flow of supply and demand. While starter home prices decreased in San Francisco, Austin, and Phoenix, Redfin found that the typical starter home sold for a record $243,000 in June.

It’s an important point that you can also find in the College Board’s Advanced Placement class in African American Studies. “In addition to agricultural work, enslaved people learned specialized trades and worked as painters, carpenters, tailors, musicians and healers in the North and South,” the A.P. “Once free, African Americans used these skills to provide for themselves and others.”Similar points, yes, but the language isn’t quite the same. To say that any more than a fortunate few could “parlay” their skills into anything that might improve their lives is to spin a fiction. For them, there was no point after slavery where they could use their skills.

Fossils embedded in rock reveal intriguing details about animals, plants and other life-forms that once called Earth home. ConsequencesCrawford Lake in Ontario is the geological site that best reflects a new epoch recognizing the impact of human activity on Earth, said geologists of the Anthropocene Working Group. The Anthropocene Working Group determined in 2016 that the epoch began around 1950 — the start of the era of nuclear testing. The international research group says that Crawford Lake in Ontario best charts humanity’s impact on Earth. Back then, it took 10 hours to relay a single image to Earth — incredibly slow by today’s standards.

Here are four investments to make right now with stocks at risk of giving up their gains. "When we see windows of market distress, we tend to have a range of different opportunities to deploy that cash," McLennan said. If foreign currencies continue to strengthen relative to the dollar, the fund managers think international stocks could take off. Perhaps that's why, of their four favorite investments to make right now, three are international stocks. All three of the stocks McLennan and Brooker are most bullish on are all trading at discounts despite being leaders in their fields and having strong leadership teams, they said.

A Reuters journalist explores his ancestors’ ties to slavery

It took me a few minutes of research to figure out why I was losing track of the descendants of the people George Julian enslaved. If the racial cleansing of Forsyth County was mentioned, I didn’t notice. Still hopeful that I might be able to somehow identify and locate living descendants of the people my family enslaved, I flew to Georgia last November. Her father was also a butler for a wealthy white family, her mother a cook. In 1860, Osby’s ancestors were enslaved and working the fields of Forsyth County.

A rare pod of orcas washed up dead on a beach in Chile late last year, according to LiveScience. It was only the second time in recorded history the Type D orcas had been found stranded. It's the first mass stranding of these killer whales in 67 years and only the second event of its kind in recorded history, according to LiveScience. Type D orcas have one of the highest levels of inbreeding of any mammalLittle is known about Type D orcas, since they tend to live in especially turbulent and rough seas in the Southern Pacific where few boats venture. The researchers found an almost identical genetic code between Type D orcas in Chile and the skeleton of a Type D that was beached in New Zealand.

A woman made of fire falls for a man made of water. The filmmakers behind the new Disney/Pixar movie “Elemental” knew the story they wanted to tell. They encountered plenty of challenges and took a few wrong turns as they worked on this romance-adventure that anthropomorphizes earth, air, fire and water. “Like these families of copper living next to helium, but don’t trust them because they’re gassy,” he said. May 18 (Reuters) - Shares in Nvdia Corp (NVDA.O), Advanced Micro Devices and Micron Technology (MU.O) on Thursday provided the biggest boosts to the chip sector, which outperformed the broader market as investors looked for ways to invest in artificial intelligence and in Japan. Shares in chip design software company Synopsys (SNPS.O) shares ended up 8.7% after it forecast better-than-expected third-quarter profit estimates, saying increased use of AI and automation boosted its business. Nvidia, which is up 116% so far in 2023, is due to report quarterly results on May 24. Nvidia shares hit highest level since December 2021 while Micron shares touched highest point since June 2022. Is Annie Ernaux the Most Brutally Honest Writer Alive?
  + stars: | 2023-05-02 | by ( Rachel Cusk | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +3 min
I listened on the radio to an astronaut reading passages aloud from Marguerite Duras from his space station to his earthbound audience below. Then, last October, the writer Annie Ernaux won the Nobel Prize for Literature, the first Frenchwoman ever to do so. We had been in France for nearly two years, and amid the alternating sensations of regeneration and disarray that this upheaval had inevitably incurred, Annie Ernaux had come to represent for me a troubling point of constancy. Despite the differences — of nationality, generation, social class, familial situation — between my own life and that of Annie Ernaux, I found myself plunged as I read into a more and more profound state of recognition. She believed in writing as some people believe in religion, as a sphere where the self, the soul, is entitled to find refuge.

Snapchat's AI tool is a total fail with users

Snapchat's AI tool made its debut across the application last week, and users aren't loving it. Only Snapchat+ subscribers can opt out of the service, which is powered by OpenAI's ChatGPT. My AI, Snapchat's ChatGPT-powered chatbot, launched to all Snapchat users earlier this month, and ever since, the app has been met with a surge of one-star reviews in the App Store. The feature, which offers a more stripped down version of OpenAI's now ubiquitous tool, was first introduced to Snapchat+ subscribers at the end of February. Kyiv estimates nearly 19,500 children have been taken to Russia since Moscow invaded in February last year, in what it condemns as illegal deportations. It was special regarding the number of children we managed to return and also because of its complexity," said Mykola Kuleba, the founder of the Save Ukraine humanitarian organisation. Kuleba said that all the children who have been brought back to Ukraine by Save Ukraine had said that no one in Russia was trying to find their parents in Ukraine. The children were taken to what Russians called stays in summer camps from occupied parts of Ukraine's Kharkiv and Kherson regions, Kuleba said. Save Ukraine said they were returned to Ukraine on a previous rescue mission last month that returned 18 children in total.
