☆ Trump tax cuts expire after 2025. Here's how the presidential election could affect your taxes

With the presidential election approaching, experts are sounding alarms about the upcoming expiration of the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, or TCJA. Without action from Congress, trillions in tax breaks enacted by former President Donald Trump via the TCJA will expire after 2025. "If the 2017 tax cuts are allowed to expire after 2025, about 62% of taxpayers would see their tax bills go up," said Erica York, senior economist and research director at the Tax Foundation. "That's because the TCJA provided tax cuts for the vast majority of taxpayers." Both Trump, the Republican presidential candidate, and Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic candidate, have called for tax changes that could affect millions of Americans.

The addition of Gabbard is particularly notable given the tense exchanges she had with the vice president during their 2020 race that left Harris rattled. Trump’s team has been sketching out potential responses on reproductive rights with the expectation Harris will make that a focus during the debate. The Trump campaign has insisted the matter is settled. Thus far, no one is expected to sit in for Harris, just as no one played Biden ahead of the June debate. Texas and a coalition of Republican-led states on Friday sued President Joe Biden’s administration over a new program that offers a path to citizenship for immigrants who entered the U.S. illegally and are now married to U.S. citizens. America First Legal, an organization led by Trump adviser Stephen Miller, served as co-counsel in the lawsuit alongside Texas and 15 other states with Republican attorneys general. Miller, a driving force behind Trump’s restrictive policies during his 2017-2021 presidency, called the Biden program “brazenly unlawful” in a statement. More than in any other foreign arena, Vance has sought to echo Trump on the Ukraine war. In doing so, he emphasized the thick vein of “scarcity politics” that runs through his foreign policy, arguing that the U.S. can’t equip Ukraine with enough materiel to hold back an opponent as vast as Russia. Vance described Ukraine ceding territory to Vladimir Putin as being in “America’s best interest” while appearing more supportive than Trump of remaining in NATO. The foreign policy views of Pence, vice president when Trump was in office, while not loved by everyone, were at least “mature” — they were informed by several terms experiencing the consequences of foreign policy becoming reality, according to Daniel Kurtzer, a former U.S. ambassador to Israel and now a professor at Princeton. Vance, on the other hand, brings “no foreign policy experience, certainly no expertise,” Kurtzer says, and he will fall in behind his boss when needed.
