AdvertisementObama's remarks reflected concerns among many Democrats that Black men — particularly young Black men — are gravitating toward Trump and could cost Harris the election. Black men and Black women do not vote much differently, it’s wrong to single out Black men when Black men are the most loyal male voting block for Democrats. That year, Trump won 4% of Black women votes while taking 13% of Black male votes. AdvertisementBut Obama and other Democrats are hoping to get ahead of what they see as Trump's potential to win over more Black voters — and especially Black men — this time around. While Obama's pitch may have rubbed some people the wrong way, Democrats know they need robust Black support to win in November.

But, Banks said, “I just kept putting pressure on them.” With the help of an advocate, Banks asked authorities to issue an Ebony Alert, California’s new notification system to inform the public about missing Black youths. Two hours after issuing the Ebony Alert, officers pinged the teen’s phone, allowing them to geolocate the device. She said she has helped a dozen families, including Banks’, demand an Ebony Alert for their missing children. Similar to an Amber Alert, Ebony Alerts are permitted to be displayed on highway signs and billboards. Because officers determine whether to issue the alert, Lee said the cases of missing Black youth are often not met with the same level of urgency.

A torrent of false claims has muddied details around the recovery efforts following the storm, which left hundreds dead and entire communities destroyed. That weariness has been echoed by other local officials and citizens who are still reeling from one of the worst storms in U.S. history. Trump used his high-profile return to Butler, Pennsylvania, where he was nearly killed by a gunman, to continue to spread false claims about FEMA. Even as some claims were quickly debunked, more continued to surface across platforms such as X, TikTok and Facebook. The deluge has frustrated public officials, who say they distract from rescue efforts and disorient workers trying to provide help.

Thom Tillis, R-N.C., chided some of the conspiracy theories that have surfaced surrounding the Hurricane Helene recovery efforts in western North Carolina. Claims about the federal response to Hurricane Helene have been coming from all over social media. When asked about Trump's comments that the federal response to the recovery efforts in North Carolina was terrible and that emergency funding was being used on immigrants, Tillis gave a two-pronged response. He also noted that, as of this moment, immigration is "not yet" impacting "the flow of resources to western North Carolina."

Assuming the Senate continues confirming pending nominees when it returns in November, the next president is poised to inherit the smallest number of judicial vacancies since when George H.W. 'Set their sights on getting judges confirmed'The amount of judicial vacancies at any one time is fluid and can rise or fall based on circumstances. During his four years in office, Trump appointed 234 federal judges, the second-highest amount by a one-term president. “If Trump is elected, the judiciary becomes the Trump judiciary,” said Maggie Jo Buchanan, managing director of Demand Justice. Some Republicans believe that tradition will continue in the coming years, which could limit the amount of judicial vacancies the next president is able to fill.

The success of so many 2020 election deniers in Republican primaries this year demonstrates that Trump’s ongoing campaign of election lies continues to have a strong hold on his party. And it’s a playbook that former President Donald Trump’s campaign has tossed aside. It’s a gamble, Trump’s campaign internally acknowledges, but one that they insist is built on data they have collected over nearly a decade and tested for the past six months. Days later, the Michigan state party chairman also plugged 10xVotes when he rolled into Traverse City, Michigan, alongside Trump running mate JD Vance. But rather than courting those voters, Trump’s campaign is in search of new ones. Trump’s campaign has also tried to seize on discord within the Democratic coalition.

Some of the ads feature doctors speaking passionately about abortion and saying that Republican candidates shouldn't represent "us" or "our" communities in Congress. But in at least four instances, House Majority PAC, a super PAC aligned with House Democratic leadership, featured Republican-blasting doctors in their ads who did not live in the district where they were advertising. The path to the House majority runs through all four of the districts where these ads ran. Since then, both doctors and patients have often become key personal messengers on abortion for Democrats. But Republicans blasted House Majority PAC over the ads, calling them misleading and accusing the group of spreading falsehoods about GOP incumbents and candidates.

The move, experts say, isn’t based on medical science but instead on ongoing efforts from anti-abortion advocates to restrict access to abortion medications in states with near-total bans, like Louisiana. During a medication abortion, mifepristone is given first, followed by misoprostol one to two days later. According to the new law, it’s not a crime for a patient to possess the medications if they were prescribed to them. Hospitals don’t need to remove misoprostol from hemorrhage carts, the spokesperson added, or hesitate to administer misoprostol to patients experiencing health emergencies. The testimony “illustrated that easy access to these drugs can be dangerous to pregnant women,” Murrill said in the statement.

Israel’s recent attacks on Hezbollah expose weaknesses in Iran’s proxy strategy. Israel’s attacks on Hezbollah exposes weaknesses in Iran’s ‘axis of resistance’In a matter of weeks, Israel has dealt devastating blows to Iran’s most important proxy, Hezbollah. For Iran, Hezbollah was supposed to be the cornerstone of its strategy to outflank superior adversaries, such as Israel, with armed proxies. A poll released last week from AAPI Data, a data analytics firm that focuses on Asian Americans, found that 66% of Asian American voters plan to support Harris and 28% intend to back Trump. The same survey found that 62% of Asian American voters say they have a favorable opinion of Harris, compared with 35% who hold an unfavorable view. Republican officials declined to elaborate on efforts to win over Asian American voters. The Harris campaign has three full-time staffers at the national headquarters dedicated to engaging Asian American voters, a spokeswoman said, with additional staff being deployed to Georgia and other battleground states. California governor vetoes contentious AI safety bill
  + stars: | 2024-09-29 | by ( Story Reuters | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +4 min
Reuters —California Governor Gavin Newsom on Sunday vetoed a hotly contested artificial intelligence safety bill, after the tech industry raised objections, saying it could drive AI companies from the state and hinder innovation. The AI industry is growing fast in California and some leaders questioned the future of these companies in the state if the bill became law. Developers of AI software operating in the state would have also needed to outline methods for turning off the AI models, effectively a kill switch. Alphabet’s Google, Microsoft-backed OpenAI and Meta Platforms, all of which are developing generative AI models, had expressed their concerns about the proposal. Newsom separately signed legislation requiring the state to assess potential threats posed by Generative AI to California’s critical infrastructure.

However, there's an interesting dynamic at play in pivotal swing states like Arizona, Michigan, and Pennsylvania headed into November: A relatively small but significant bloc of Trump voters are also backing Democratic Senate candidates. In Michigan, Democratic Rep. Elissa Slotkin led Rogers by five points (47% to 42%). If Harris wins in November and Democrats win exactly 50 seats, then Minnesota Gov. But should Trump win the election and pro-Trump ticket-splitters help Democrats keep their majority, it would pump the brakes on a conservative agenda. Lisa Goodman, the founding president of Equality Delaware, a statewide LGBTQ organization, worked at the same law firm as McBride’s father. “I said, ‘This changes everything,’” Goodman recalled, regarding McBride’s ability to help lobby for state legislation that would help trans people. “I also said, ‘Sarah is going to do more as Sarah than you ever imagined.’”Both statements proved true. The best example of that, they said, was her work to pass paid family leave in Delaware. Mike Maroney, who was first elected in 2016, was arrested in August on a charge of indecent exposure. “While the legal process must take its course, the perception of impropriety and the repeated legal entanglements surrounding Senator Maroney have brought discredit to the West Virginia Senate,” Ethan Moore, chairman of the Monongalia County Republican Executive Committee, said in a statement. New York City Mayor Eric Adams will step into a Manhattan courtroom and into the history books on Friday when he is arraigned on federal corruption and bribery charges that could force him out of office. Adams is the first sitting New York City mayor to be indicted on criminal charges in the modern era. “This was a multiyear scheme to buy favor with a single New York City politician on the rise,” U.S. Attorney Damian Williams said Thursday. Adams' indictment capped two weeks of turmoil in his administration, a period during which Banks, the city’s police commissioner, and the city's top lawyer, have announced their resignations. “You could almost picture them trying to cobble this together and try to tell a story so that they could say, ‘corruption, corruption’ at a press conference,” Spiro said at a Thursday press conference.
