Review: ‘Lyonesse’ Is a Starry Mess
  + stars: | 2023-10-26 | by ( Matt Wolf | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
“We dream big,” says a no-nonsense film executive early in “Lyonesse,” the starry, if overstuffed, new play that opened Wednesday night at the Harold Pinter Theater, in London. And so, too, does this West End debut from Penelope Skinner, a British playwright whose works have long enlivened small theaters on both sides of the Atlantic. The themes arrive thick and fast across nearly three hours: #MeToo, cancel culture, the tyranny of men and many others. But not even Lily James and Kristin Scott Thomas, the production’s commercial draws, can transform the scattershot material into a coherent whole. It takes courage to open a new play in the West End without a previous run somewhere else, but “Lyonesse” whimpers where it should roar.

The investment speaks to Carlyle's underlying thesis in this space, said the managing director, Ben Fund, who sits on the Carlyle Credit Opportunities team. "It is amazing how much people love some of this high-quality content," Fund told Insider, speaking about famous sitcoms or films from recent decades. Streamers also need unique original titles to lure subscribers, but "it's a lot more expensive and risky to create new content than it is to license content," Fund said. Finding strategies to support Hollywood through volatile timesCarlyle's big moves come as private asset managers step up their lending game in Hollywood. For Carlyle, Fund said, this creates opportunity — and he added that such companies often have "real pride" and a "real legacy" to uphold.

PHOENIX (AP) — The Los Angeles Dodgers’ third straight 100-win season led to a third consecutive postseason flop. “There’s some things with the format that people can dissect or whatever, but the bottom line is that the last two years we’ve got outplayed in the postseason,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. The Dodgers won the NL West in 10 of those seasons, yet their only World Series in that span was following the pandemic-shortened 2020 season. And after winning 100 games this season, the Dodgers were swept by Arizona, which had 16 fewer wins. It's just how I didn't help the team win the series and that's the most disappointing part, letting your guys down.”___

New anti-obesity drugs have the potential to transform public health, while obliterating demand for products and services from the medical, food and fitness industries. Drugs developed by Novo Nordisk (NOVOb.CO) and Eli Lilly (LLY.N) appear to be the first truly effective diet treatments. In one clinical trial, patients taking Eli Lilly’s soon-to-be-launched weight-loss drug lost about 50 pounds (23 kg). Only about a third of those who started taking the drugs for obesity were still doing so a year later, according to one analysis. Yet even as Novo, Lilly and others see their addressable markets expand, some companies will see theirs shrink.

“When Steven Tyler wrote his memoir, he completely diminished me by saying, ‘Well, everything was already written’ and I just added a few words,” Child, 69, said of Aerosmith’s 1987 hit. “When Joe Perry wrote about ‘Dude’ in his autobiography, he said, ‘Well, Desmond just came up with the title.’”That wasn’t all. After “I Was Made for Lovin’ You,” which Child wrote with Paul Stanley of Kiss, became a smash for that band, he asserted that Gene Simmons “started saying in every interview, ‘We hired guards in front of the studio to keep Desmond Child out,’ because he hated that song so much. TORONTO (AP) — When the Hollywood actors union announced a strike this summer, Cameron Bailey, the longtime chief executive of the Toronto International Film Festival, dusted off his COVID-19 playbook. “This is the nature of running a festival,” Bailey says. CNN —There is a small strata of Hollywood deal-making where who’s behind a project – and with whom the programmer gets to align itself – carries more weight than the specifics. That would seem to define Meghan, Duchess of Sussex and Prince Harry’s producing arrangement with Netflix, which bears fruit this week with “Heart of Invictus,” a docuseries about the games devoted to wounded, ill and injured veterans. The streaming giant’s 2020 partnership with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex clearly appeared to be modeled after its relationship with Barack and Michelle Obama’s production company, Higher Ground. Yet even with that disclaimer, there are moments in “Heart of Invictus” where one has to be pretty heartless not to get a bit choked up, and it’s hard to question that its heart is in the right place. “Heart of Invictus” premieres August 30 on Netflix.

A year ago, the Venice Film Festival had enough star power to put even celebrity-worshiping Cannes on notice. But without all of those celebrities, can Venice still go viral? That puts Venice in a bind, as it’s regarded as one of the best places for Hollywood to unveil starry awards-season titles. (A low-profile Italian film is opening instead.) And I’ve heard of a few more starry fall films that were earmarked for Venice but opted for the Telluride Film Festival instead, since that event is less driven by the photo ops and news conferences that are no longer feasible in Italy.

CNN —The Euclid space telescope, designed to investigate some of the universe’s biggest mysteries, has captured its first glimpses of the cosmos. Investigating invisible dark matterEuclid’s primary goal is to observe the cosmic mysteries of the universe, including dark matter and dark energy. While dark matter has never actually been detected, it is believed to make up at least 85% of the total matter in the universe. These observations will effectively allow Euclid to see how the universe has evolved over the past 10 billion years. As Euclid makes its observations, the telescope will create a catalog of about 1.5 billion galaxies and the stars within them.

The two-time Oscar winner Kevin Spacey said last month that he was ready to return to acting after years in the wilderness following sexual assault allegations. “I know that there are people right now who are ready to hire me the moment I am cleared of these charges in London,” Mr. Spacey told a German magazine, referring to accusations that he had assaulted four men. “The second that happens, they’re ready to move forward.”Mr. Spacey was right in several ways: A British jury found him not guilty of nine counts of sexual assault this week, nearly a year after a federal jury in Manhattan cleared him of battery in a civil case filed by the actor Anthony Rapp. And he has two small projects awaiting release, with directors who could not be more publicly supportive. But the starry Hollywood roles, like Spacey’s conniving politician in “House of Cards” and droll advertising executive in “American Beauty,” may not come back anytime soon, if at all.

Already, some upcoming films have had their release plans modified as a result of the SAG-AFTRA strike. Sanders said the studio has assured him that, so far, no discussions have been had about bumping “The Color Purple” into 2024. And without the usual influx of year-end prestige films, this year’s awards season could look very different — and, in another way, all-too-familiar. “Worst-case scenario, every studio on the planet decides to move their fourth-quarter movies into next year,” Sanders mused. “Suddenly, the last contenders for awards are ‘Barbie’ and ‘Oppenheimer.’ Then what happens?”

CNN —For the first time, astronomers have assembled a glowing portrait of the Milky Way galaxy using cosmic “ghost particles” detected by a telescope embedded in Antarctica’s ice. Over the years, astronomers have showcased stunning images of the Milky Way through electromagnetic radiation from visible light or radio waves. These tiny, high-energy cosmic particles are often referred to as ghostly because they are extremely vaporous and can pass through any kind of matter without changing. The IceCube detector is seen under a starry night sky, with the Milky Way appearing over low auroras in the background. Cosmic rays are mostly made up of protons or atomic nuclei that have been stripped from atoms, according to NASA.
