Think of "spatial computing" as an umbrella term that refers to merging the digital world with the physical world in a seamless way. Instead, Apple refers to the Vision Pro as a "spatial computer." If you're in the U.S. and have an extra $3,500 lying around, you can now get Apple's latest gadget, the Vision Pro — but don't call it a virtual reality headset. While both augmented reality and virtual reality fall under the spatial computing umbrella, the two terms refer to different user experiences. Apple is positioning the Vision Pro as a full-on computer that could work as an alternative to your desktop or laptop, instead of a device that's mainly used for entertainment, he adds.

The future for Apple's Vision Pro looks promising despite Wall Street's muted enthusiasm. Wall Street doesn't expect the Vision Pro to drive a ton of revenue at first though. Bank of America estimates the Vision Pro could add 46 cents per share to earnings-per-share (EPS) within the next five years. "We tested the Vision Pro and walked away positively from the overall extremely unique and immersive experience," BofA analysts wrote in a Monday research note. While it'll take time, the Vision Pro has the potential to boost sales and earnings in the future.

“We can't wait for people to experience the magic,” Apple CEO Tim Cook gushed Thursday while discussing the Vision Pro with analysts. If that happens with the Vision Pro, references to spatial computing could become as ingrained in modern-day vernacular as mobile and personal computing — two previous technological revolutions in technology that Apple played an integral role in creating. Photos You Should See View All 45 ImagesSo what is spatial computing? On the work side of things, videoconferencing service Zoom and other companies that provide online meeting tools have built apps for the Vision Pro, too. Although it might be heralded as a breakthrough if Apple realizes its vision with Vision Pro, the concept of spatial computing has been around for at least 20 years.

The modest revenue growth announced Thursday as part of Apple’s October-December results ended four consecutive quarters of year-over-year sales declines. As usual, the iPhone accounted for the bulk of Apple’s revenue. Apple’s services division, which is tied largely to the iPhone, posted an 11% rise in revenue from the previous year to $23.12 billion. Both the revenue and earnings for the quarter exceeded analysts’ projections, according to FactSet Research. But investors appeared unimpressed with the showing as Apple’s stock price dropped 2% in extended trading after the numbers came out.

Read previewWhen Apple launches the Vision Pro on Friday, it could really do with developers lapping it up. Given the price tag, Apple watchers aren't expecting the Vision Pro to fly off the shelves immediately. AdvertisementTo spur future consumer sales then, Apple really needs developers onside to help make the Vision Pro a success. In theory, it means developers aren't strictly limited to releasing their apps to Apple users through its own App Store. More broadly, it puts Apple and developers at odds with each other at a moment when Apple really needs apps for Vision Pro.

All three major averages posted gains for the third consecutive week, lifted by solid quarterly earnings and positive economic data. Earnings season ramps up next week, with five of the Super Six mega-cap stocks delivering results. Employment numbers are the most important economic data, with Friday's January nonfarm payrolls report carrying the most weight. The January ISM Manufacturing report on Thursday and December's factory orders report Friday are expected to show the sector still in contraction mode. But earnings and commentary this week from peer Sartorious made us encouraged about a return to growth in 2024.

The $3,500 Vision Pro, a face computer that resembles ski goggles, will be released next week. The device, which includes high-resolution displays and sensors that track eye movements and hand gestures, is one of Apple’s most ambitious products. I was among the first group of journalists to try the Vision Pro last year and walked away impressed with the quality of the picture but ultimately not sure that people would want to wear it. The devices were intended to create immersive experiences for getting things done by moving the body instead of typing on keyboards. Sales of mixed reality and virtual reality headsets fell 8.3 percent last year, according to the research firm IDC, though they may rebound this year with Apple entering the market.

Preorders for Apple 's $3,499 Vision Pro headset began Thursday morning ahead of its U.S. release on Feb. 2. The Vision Pro is Apple's first new product category since it released the Apple Watch in 2015. Wall Street doesn't expect Apple to sell it in the same quantities as it does its other products, like the iPhone, Apple Watch and Mac, at least not at first. UBS' David Vogt estimates Apple could generate about $1.4 billion in revenue from the Vision Pro in 2024, assuming Apple ships about 400,000 handsets. The entry-level Vision Pro comes with 256GB of storage and the same M2 chip that Apple includes in some of its Macs.
