If you're in the U.S. and have an extra $3,500 lying around, you can now get Apple's latest gadget, the Vision Pro — but don't call it a virtual reality headset. While both augmented reality and virtual reality fall under the spatial computing umbrella, the two terms refer to different user experiences. Apple is positioning the Vision Pro as a full-on computer that could work as an alternative to your desktop or laptop, instead of a device that's mainly used for entertainment, he adds.

While it'll take time, the Vision Pro has the potential to boost sales and earnings in the future.

The $3,500 Vision Pro, a face computer that resembles ski goggles, will be released next week. The device, which includes high-resolution displays and sensors that track eye movements and hand gestures, is one of Apple’s most ambitious products. I was among the first group of journalists to try the Vision Pro last year and walked away impressed with the quality of the picture but ultimately not sure that people would want to wear it. The devices were intended to create immersive experiences for getting things done by moving the body instead of typing on keyboards. Sales of mixed reality and virtual reality headsets fell 8.3 percent last year, according to the research firm IDC, though they may rebound this year with Apple entering the market.

Preorders for Apple 's $3,499 Vision Pro headset began Thursday morning ahead of its U.S. release on Feb. 2. The Vision Pro is Apple's first new product category since it released the Apple Watch in 2015. Wall Street doesn't expect Apple to sell it in the same quantities as it does its other products, like the iPhone, Apple Watch and Mac, at least not at first. UBS' David Vogt estimates Apple could generate about $1.4 billion in revenue from the Vision Pro in 2024, assuming Apple ships about 400,000 handsets. The entry-level Vision Pro comes with 256GB of storage and the same M2 chip that Apple includes in some of its Macs.
