Investing in Space: Texts from orbit
  + stars: | 2023-02-23 | by ( Michael Sheetz | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +3 min
CNBC's Investing in Space newsletter offers a view into the business of space exploration and privatization, delivered straight to your inbox. Recently I woke up to a text message from a satellite, sent by Lynk Global co-founder and CEO Charles Miller. "I asked them to send that text message from one of our phones," Miller said. So far, the satellite operators of Globalstar , Iridium , SpaceX and AST SpaceMobile are also chasing this untapped market. It plans on "launching many more this year" and has an eventual goal of up to 5,000 satellites in orbit.
Investing in Space: The space station kingmaker

CNBC's Investing in Space newsletter offers a view into the business of space exploration and privatization, delivered straight to your inbox. Several U.S. companies are working to build new orbiting habitats to replace the aging International Space Station. NASA's role in seeding the fledgling market was a hot topic at the FAA's space conference last week. Four private space stations are vying to get online by the time that happens:Axiom Space and Northrop Grumman"Starlab" is under development by Voyager Space and subsidiary Nanoracks alongside Airbus. These days, it's been doling out funds to the four space station projects.
SpaceX's COO said the company didn't intend Starlink to be "weaponized" amid the war, per reports. Gwynne Shotwell claimed the Ukrainian military had used Starlink internet in "unintentional" ways. Ukraine has used Starlink for drones to help destroy Russian tanks, The Times reported last year. However, Shotwell claimed Ukraine had used Starlink "in ways that were unintentional and not part of any agreement," according to a report by Space News. Since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, SpaceX has provided thousands of Starlink dishes to Ukrainians and has helped Ukrainian troops stay online.
That number includes both rocket launches and capsule reentries, and has been steadily climbing. A Falcon Heavy rocket launches the USSF-67 mission on January 15, 2023 from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. "Air space is going to be a critical, critical issue," Isom said, calling on new industries to contribute to the cost of air traffic control. A graph of FAA-licensed or permitted commercial space launches (excludes launches licensed by other U.S. government agencies, such as NASA or the Department of Defense). Together they create a moving target for space launches and the commercial airlines eyeing the same air space.
Investing in Space: Starship in the D.C. spotlight
  + stars: | 2023-02-09 | by ( Michael Sheetz | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
CNBC's Investing in Space newsletter offers a view into the business of space exploration and privatization, delivered straight to your inbox. I'm in D.C. for the 25th annual Commercial Space Transportation conference. CSF executive members are a veritable who's-who of U.S. space companies founded in the 21st century. So why does the space industry care so much about Starship's success (or failure) to reach orbit? Notably relevant to this conference's host, SpaceX still needs a license from the FAA to launch Starship.

Investing in Space: Picture day

CNBC's Investing in Space newsletter offers a view into the business of space exploration and privatization, delivered straight to your inbox. Recently the spotlight turned to an increasingly lucrative sector of the space industry — satellite imagery — thanks to space-focused research and investment firm Quilty Analytics. The market for space pictures matured in the past decade, with expanded use in conflict hot spots, infrastructure and supply chains, to name a few. I chatted this week with Quilty's Director of Research Caleb Henry, who authored a report for the firm on "Very High Resolution" imagery. Satellite imagery "struggled to prove itself for years" as a sector in the space industry, Henry said.
China's global network of ground stations to support a growing number of satellites and outer space ambitions has drawn concern from some nations that it could be used for espionage, a suggestion China rejects. In 2020, Sweden's state-owned space company, which had provided ground stations that helped fly Chinese spacecraft and transmit data, declined to renew contracts with China or accept new Chinese business due to "changes" in geopolitics. The project was part of broader initiatives aimed at building China's marine economy and turning China into a marine power, according to China Space News. A Chinese-built ground station in Argentina's Patagonia has stirred concerns about its purpose despite China's assurance that the station's goal is peaceful space observation and spacecraft missions. China in October launched the last of three modules of its space station, which became the second permanently inhabited outpost in low-earth orbit after the NASA-led International Space Station.
Investing in Space: Doing well to do good
  + stars: | 2023-01-26 | by ( Michael Sheetz | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
CNBC's Investing in Space newsletter offers a view into the business of space exploration and privatization, delivered straight to your inbox. I met up with Planet CFO Ashley Fieglein Johnson here in NYC earlier this month, and one thing she said has really stuck with me: "We have to do well in order to do good." And it's true: Space technologies have changed life around the world in a variety of ways, from GPS to communications and more. "The carrot of being able to do good doesn't tend to survive the nuclear winter of a tough economy," Fieglein Johnson said. Planet's stock slid last year alongside other recently debuted pure-play space companies, but Fieglein Johnson sees the company at a "tipping point" because "awareness of Planet is just at a fundamentally new level."
Investing in Space: Looking up in 2023

CNBC's Investing in Space newsletter offers a view into the business of space exploration and privatization, delivered straight to your inbox. After ending on a bit of a downer ("A year to forget for space stocks"), I'm entering 2023 with what feels like contrarian optimism. The space industry is chock full of opportunities and milestones to look forward to over the next twelve months, as the market for 21st century space companies continues to evolve and mature. Here are the top three space business news items I'm watching for and, shocker, all three are about getting to orbit. Space companies that are beyond the development phase and are expanding could distinguish themselves with investors as a discounted opportunity in a shifting market.
Investing in Space: Digital orbital danger

CNBC's Investing in Space newsletter offers a view into the business of space exploration and privatization, delivered straight to your inbox. Companies and governments are now launching satellites by the thousands each year, and that changing landscape brings with it the evolving challenge of cybersecurity in space. The concept of space security arguably doesn't get talked about enough, but a quick search for something like "cyber," "space," and "Pentagon" gives you an immediate sense of how U.S. military leaders see the digital threat to satellites. The company just raised $16.4 million in an oversubscribed round, to make a full-tilt push into building its space business. It entered the space market in late 2019, and Beames stepped in as chairman early last year.
Spaceflight Now was locked out of Twitter while covering a SpaceX rocket launch, its editor says. It's unclear which Twitter rules Spaceflight Now may have violated, or why its tweet was taken down. The website's editor, Stephen Clark, said in a tweet that the account had been locked "for violating unspecified rules while covering a SpaceX launch." As of Tuesday afternoon, the Spaceflight Now Twitter account did not appear to be suspended, but was marked with a banner saying that its most recent tweet had violated Twitter rules. In December, Twitter suddenly suspended the accounts of several prominent journalists who had been covering Musk and his takeover of the company.
Investing in Space: A year to forget for space stocks
  + stars: | 2022-12-29 | by ( Michael Sheetz | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
CNBC's Investing in Space newsletter offers a view into the business of space exploration and privatization, delivered straight to your inbox. For most anyone with money in the market, 2022 was a year to forget – and space stocks were no exception. Remember, these space SPAC names all came to market at about $10 a share. Morgan Stanley in a note to clients recently highlighted those deals as evidence that "space companies [are] on Santa's List," and I suspect M&A won't be slowing down in 2023. A programming note: Investing in Space will be taking the next week off for holiday travel.
Elon Musk has stoked his ongoing rivalry with Jeff Bezos. Responding to a tweet suggesting the Amazon founder "copies" every business move he makes, Musk said, apparently sarcastically: "Maybe it's a coincidence." Musk has been feuding with Jeff Bezos for some 15 years and regularly accuses him of being a copycat. The Amazon founder has long had an interest in space exploration, starting up spaceflight firm Blue Origin in 2000. Musk founded his own commercial space firm SpaceX two years later.
Investing in Space: Coopetition

CNBC's Investing in Space newsletter offers a view into the business of space exploration and privatization, delivered straight to your inbox. Left without rides to space, OneWeb and Northrop turned to one of their biggest rivals in satellite broadband and space cargo delivery, respectively. Space – and the perspective it brings of a single, fragile planet floating in the dark – is often seen as unifying. I've often seen how tight-knit the space industry is – but that doesn't mean competitors are flying off into the sunset together. A programming note: Investing in Space will be taking the next week off for holiday travel.
Investing in Space: Temper your expectations
  + stars: | 2022-12-08 | by ( Michael Sheetz | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +3 min
CNBC's Investing in Space newsletter offers a view into the business of space exploration and privatization, delivered straight to your inbox. One that repeatedly comes up is the need for tempered expectations when it comes to schedule targets across the industry. Take, for example, an unabashed thread by ABL Space on its progress toward the debut launch of its RS1 rocket. Company leadership should be ambitious and optimistic about deadlines – but expectations need to be managed clearly and realistically, as well. The best space companies set targets that are achievable, and keep cushion on their balance sheet for when they aren't.
Investing in Space: Moon rising

The view of the moon and the Earth from the Orion capsule on Nov. 28, 2022..CNBC's Investing in Space newsletter offers a view into the business of space exploration and privatization, delivered straight to your inbox. Even one of the more difficult stories of this year – the bankruptcy of Masten – was largely about the moon. With NASA's Orion beaming back stunning images of our planet as it whipped by the moon, I spoke to Airbus Ventures partner Lewis Pinault. The next couple years should see a variety of spacecraft and robots sent to the moon. However the future shakes out, it's clear a lunar economy is no longer fiction.

Earlier this year, Astra set out to launch a mission with its now-discontinued Rocket 3.3 vehicle. While that rocket would launch three days later (and suffer a mid-flight failure for a separate reason), that February abort sent Astra's stock down 13%. Stage: The sections of the rocket, typically identified as first or lower, second or upper, and so on. Scrub: Postponing a countdown and no longer attempting to launch at the previously set time.

Starship prototype #24 conducts a test firing of six of its Raptor engines at the company's facility near Brownsville, Texas on Sept. 8, 2022. CNBC's Investing in Space newsletter offers a view into the business of space exploration and privatization, delivered straight to your inbox. The race between SpaceX and NASA to get their monster rockets into space tipped in the government's favor this week, with the Space Launch System (SLS) finally thundering off the launch pad – putting more pressure on Elon Musk's company to get Starship off the ground. Hours before SLS took off, NASA announced an additional Starship award under the lunar Artemis program. It's been more than two years since Musk declared Starship the company's top priority, and he's repeatedly set ambitious goals for the rocket's development.
Investing in Space: SpaceX graduation day

CNBC's Investing in Space newsletter offers a view into the business of space exploration and privatization, delivered straight to your inbox. Tuesday is important for many of the 10,000 or so folks at SpaceX: It's vesting day. Twice a year, on May 15 and Nov. 15, employees are granted their stock awards, which can be very lucrative. Like many companies, stock awards are part of multi-year equity packages. There are now dozens of companies, organizations and more – many in the space industry, as well as adjacent sectors – that feature wealthy former SpaceX employees as founders, executives and more.
Investing in Space: NASA and SpaceX need each other

Investing in Space: Rockets are only the beginning

CNBC's Investing in Space newsletter offers a view into the business of space exploration and privatization, delivered straight to your inbox. But the CEOs of these companies will tell you that tapping into the global launch market isn't enough. "The big space companies of the future are not just a launch company on its own or a spacecraft manufacturer on its own. Breaking into the launch market may seem hard (and expensive) enough on its own. Virgin Orbit is similarly developing a satellite business, which CEO Dan Hart told CNBC he hopes can "unlock" space-based services.
It's long been a dream of satellite communications visionaries, but bulky, specialized and typically expensive satellite phones fell short of mass appeal. While SpaceX has launched more than 3,000 first generation satellites so far, adding a direct-to-phone service will require thousands more. Private venture Lynk Global likewise aims to provide a cell tower in space from satellites, with plans for a constellation of several thousand in a few years. And while some build out satellite networks, other major players are eyeing Earth-bound innovations, with systems dependent on a specialized antenna in phones. In partnership with Globalstar , the feature allows users to send compressed text messages from iPhone 14s via satellites.

We're now in the final quarter of the year, and for several space companies, it's survival time. They weren't proven businesses and the tide went out," a banker familiar with the sector told me about the environment for space stocks. While not a definitive metric, the cash burn rates of de-SPAC space companies – from AST SpaceMobile to Redwire and more – give a window into the urgency of the situation. Private space companies are feeling the pinch as well.
Investing in Space: You must be this rich to ride

CNBC's Investing in Space newsletter offers a view into the business of space exploration and privatization, delivered straight to your inbox. For decades, only those selected and trained by the world's superpowers could journey to space. Then came Dennis Tito, a man who left NASA and built his fortune in finance – a fortune he used to become a space tourist. Two decades after Tito's first mission, the long-promised marketplace for space tourism is finally burgeoning. And yes, space tourism is currently only for the wealthy, and those lucky enough to ride along with them.
