And more broadly, Ukraine's air force is having to rapidly undergo a wider transition that its international partners took significantly longer to do. Those older jets have hydraulic systems, while F-16 jets are fly-by-wire, which means computers process the input by pilots. Reuters —Georgian parliamentary speaker Shalva Papuashvili said in a Facebook post on Thursday that he had signed into law a “family values” bill curbing LGBT rights, just weeks before a high-stakes parliamentary election. Lawmakers from the ruling Georgian Dream party last month approved the bill, which bans gender transitions and could outlaw pride marches and displays of the LGBT rainbow flag. President Salome Zourabichvili, a critic of the ruling party, had refused to sign the bill into law. Georgian Dream and its allies in parliament had enough seats to overcome her opposition. Georgian Dream argues that its opponents would bring a return to war, and says it would pursue more stable relations with Russia.

Washington CNN —The Justice Department and Microsoft on Thursday announced the seizure of more than 100 web domains that a Russian intelligence agency allegedly used to try to hack current and former US officials, civil-society groups and Russians living in the US. It’s the latest in a series of moves from the Justice Department to expose alleged covert Russian operations targeting US democracy in the runup to the 2024 presidential election. The UK government last year accused the same Russian hacking group of conducting a “sustained unsuccessful attempts to interfere in UK political processes” over several years that hacked politicians, civil servants and journalists. The hackers operate on behalf of Russia’s FSB intelligence agency, the prime successor to the Soviet-era KGB, according to US officials. Another FSB-linked hacking group has posed a direct threat to US critical infrastructure by targeting energy facilities, according to US officials.

KYIV, Ukraine — Russian troops on Wednesday took charge of the eastern Ukrainian town of Vuhledar, a bastion that had resisted intense attacks since Russia launched its full-scale assault in 2022. Russian Telegram channels, however, published video of troops waving the Russian tricolor flag over shattered buildings. Russia has been using pincer tactics to trap and then constrict Ukrainian strongholds. Russian bloggers said Russia could now try to push towards Velyka Novosilka, just over 20 miles to the west. Russian forces currently control 98.5% of the Luhansk region and 60% of the Donetsk region.

Matt Gaetz said Thursday that he has learned the House Ethics Committee will subpoena him as it investigates whether the Florida Republican engaged in sexual misconduct with a minor or illicit drug use. Gaetz, a close ally of former President Donald Trump, made the statement in an angry letter to the Ethics Committee that declared he will "no longer voluntarily participate" in the panel's probe. Gaetz said he understands that a subpoena has been "issued, but not served" — but did not say whether he would comply with the subpoena. A pilot died after two single-engine planes collided mid-air on Sunday in Southern California, officials said. The planes, a single-engine Nanchang CJ-6 and a single-engine Yakovlev Yak-52, collided near Lancaster, in northern Los Angeles County, around 1 p.m. PT on Sunday, the Federal Aviation Administration said. One plane had landed near the intersection 47th Street East and Ave F and the other near 60th Street East and Ave G in Lancaster. It came a day after a joint fleet of Chinese and Russian warships sailed around Japanese northern coasts. Earlier in September, Russian military aircraft flew around southern Japanese airspace. The Chinese aircraft carrier Liaoning, accompanied by two destroyers, sailed between Japan’s westernmost island of Yonaguni and nearby Iriomote, entering close to Japan’s waters. According to Japan’s military, it scrambled jets nearly 669 times between April 2023 and March 2024, about 70% of the time against Chinese military aircraft, though that did not include airspace violations.

Russian intelligence services are building up their presence in Mexico for spy operations targeting the United States, a return to Cold War tactics by an increasingly aggressive regime, according to U.S. officials and former intelligence officers.
