The National Union of Healthcare Workers (NUHW) — which represents 19,000 healthcare workers in California and Hawaii, including 4,700 mental health workers — picketed outside Kaiser facilities in Los Angeles, San Diego, Anaheim and Fontana, seeking an increase in salaries, restoration of pensions and increased staffing. Union members on strike in Southern California have said their demands are line in with what Kaiser has provided to the majority of its workforce. Kaiser, one of the nation’s largest non-profit healthcare providers, is required by law to provide mental health services to its members even with the workers on strike. A Southern California man is accused of drugging and sexually assaulting nine women, one of whom died, prosecutors said. Michael DiGiorgio, 50, has been charged with murder, three felony counts of rape by use of a drug in connection to events that the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office say happened at his homes in Hermosa Beach and Redondo Beach. He was arrested Thursday morning by Redondo Beach police and remains in jail, NBC Los Angeles reported. “I extend my deepest sympathy to the victims, whose lives have been irrevocably changed and the life lost by the alleged brutal acts of the offender,” Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón said in a statement. “Our office is committed to holding him accountable for the pain and trauma he has inflicted.”

HALF MOON BAY, Calif. — A Minnesota horticulture teacher remained the reigning champion Monday of an annual pumpkin-weighing contest in Northern California where his massive gourds have won the top prize four years in a row. Travis Gienger, of Anoka, Minnesota, beat his closest competitor by 6 pounds to clinch the victory at the 51st World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off in Half Moon Bay, south of San Francisco. His winning gourd came in at 2,471 pounds, falling short of the world record he set last year with a pumpkin weighing 2,749 pounds. “We had really, really tough weather and somehow, some way, I kept on working,” Gienger said. He said the giant pumpkin’s next stop will be in Southern California, where a team of professional carvers will do a 3D carve on it at a Halloween event.
