It was the top box office film of the year, earning $1.4 billion worldwide, and it became Warner Bros.’s highest-grossing film ever, outpacing both “Dark Knight” movies, “Wonder Woman” and every chapter in the “Harry Potter” franchise. It was a DayGlo-pink rebuttal to decades of conventional Hollywood thinking, and its success seemed to herald a new paradigm for the film industry. Movies written and directed by women and focused on female protagonists could attract enormous audiences to multiplexes around the world. Yet in the 12 months since the movie’s release, little has changed in Hollywood. The box office is down 17 percent from last year at this time, and studios spooked by a fickle audience (yes to “Twisters,” no to “Fall Guy”) are again questioning the reliability of the theatrical marketplace.

For us, it was the best family vacation ever. My twin daughters are huge SwiftiesThe Swiftie Era started in our house when our then 11-year-old twin girls came home from two weeks at sleepaway camp last summer, confirmed Taylor Swift fans. Tickets were prohibitively expensive, and we were already planning a family summer vacation in Southern California. I don't know what her magic is, but Taylor Swift is an effortless, tireless performer who emanates an effervescence of her own. Still, the Biden campaign has boasted record-breaking grassroots fundraising. On Friday, Vice President Kamala Harris joined a call with donors amid ongoing party panic. The vice president was asked to do the call by the West Wing, according to campaign officials. Harris’ aides have repeatedly stressed that there’s no daylight between the vice president and the president, and she maintained her defense of Biden on Friday. “He will be doing big fundraisers and focusing on continuing to bolster grassroots fundraising,” Biden campaign spokesperson Kevin Munoz said on MSNBC on Saturday.

People walk toward an entrance to Disneyland on April 24, 2023 in Anaheim, California. Four unions representing more than 14,000 workers at Disney's theme parks and resort properties in Southern California announced late Friday that members have voted to authorize a strike, citing alleged unfair labor practices during contract negotiations. The thousands of workers at Disneyland, Disney California Adventure, the Downtown Disney retail district and Disney-owned hotels authorized a walkout, the unions announced. If a strike does occur, it would be the first at Disneyland in 40 years. The unions said there was "a 99% membership vote in favor of authorizing their Disney Workers Rising bargaining committee to call for an unfair labor practice strike."

Now, negotiating better wages and working conditions for Carranza and thousands of other Disneyland employees has gotten messy, to the point where 9,500 of them will conclude a vote on Friday that will authorize a potential strike. But that does not mean a strike will necessarily happen, as was the case with Teamsters at UPS last year. A dream of affordabilityCarranza ‘s Disneyland wage is just over $20 per hour, after factoring in a differential for working the overnight shift. Escaping reality, not confronting itA strike would involve about 9,500 employees who work at Disneyland Park, currently under a contract that expired in June. In 2012, San Francisco's Public Utilities Commission began developing the Onsite Water Reuse Program to investigate whether water reuse, also known as water recycling, in buildings could be a solution to California's water problem. The adoption of on-site water reuse can also be a sensible decision for developers. Water reuse to overcome hurdlesWhile large plants and on-site water systems in major buildings have been California's more established methods of water reuse, the state's biggest hurdle is retrofitting systems for existing buildings. During times of drought, the state has encouraged water conservation and water recycling, such as the use of recycled water for plants. In 2023, California made progress toward establishing recycled water for direct potable reuse and allowing recycled water to be used in the state's drinking-water supply.

A full public assessment of Trump’s injuries is necessary, for both the former president’s own health and the clarity it can provide for voters about the recovery of the man who could become president of the United States once again. US Rep. Ronny Jackson, Trump’s former White House physician, said during an interview Monday on “The Benny Show” podcast, that he “checked out” the wound to Trump’s ear and bandaged it himself. We have worked with the Secret Service in the past and local and federal law enforcement to come up with plans about if an incident like this happened,” Rottinghaus told CNN. In the Monday interview, Jackson said Trump’s injury was “dressed up. A daily dose of a widely used antibiotic can prevent some infections with syphilis, gonorrhea and chlamydia, potentially a new solution to the escalating crisis of sexually transmitted infections, scientists reported on Thursday. Scientists still have to resolve significant questions, including whether S.T.I.s might become resistant to the antibiotic and what effect it could have on healthy gut bacteria in people taking it every day. The approach would be recommended primarily to people at elevated risk of sexually transmitted infections during certain periods, said Dr. Jeffrey Klausner, an infectious diseases physician at the University of Southern California who was not involved in the new work. “The number of people who are really going to be offered this and take this is still very small,” he said. “In general, the more choices we have for people, the more prevention options we have, the better.”

Multiple wildfires in Southern California have burned a combined 20,000 acres, forced more than 1,000 evacuations over the weekend and, according to the California Highway Patrol, briefly shut down Interstate 5 on Sunday night. The Lost Hills fire, in Kern County, had burned about 500 acres by Sunday night and was zero percent contained, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. Several fires that broke out in Kern and San Luis Obispo counties on Saturday were blamed on critical weather conditions and dry lightning over the weekend, Kern County officials said in a statement. The National Weather Service’s Los Angeles bureau said on Saturday that the heat wave scorching the Western United States would increase the risk of fire, and that “any new fire will grow very quickly.”One fire started on Saturday in Tejon Ranch, a well-known, 270,000-acre private property in Kern County, and by Sunday night had burned about 9,950 acres and was 40 percent contained, officials said. The blaze, known as the Rancho fire, has forced the evacuation of more than 1,000 people from the nearby Stallion Springs and Bear Valley Springs communities, the Kern County Fire Department said.

A wildfire that erupted in the mountains of Santa Barbara County in Southern California has burned more than 16,000 acres, prompting an evacuation order and threatening ranches, including Michael Jackson’s former Neverland Ranch, the authorities said. The fire, called the Lake Fire, broke out shortly before 4 p.m. on Friday near Zaca Lake, just northeast of Los Olivos, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. The cause of the fire, which was zero percent contained as of Sunday, remained under investigation. The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office issued an evacuation order for an area near the Los Padres National Forest that includes the property once known as Michael Jackson’s Neverland Ranch, a 2,700-acre property in Los Olivos, about 150 miles northwest of Los Angeles.
