Mr. Solis, who earns about $3,500 a month delivering for apps like DoorDash, used to send about $1,500 monthly. Since the spring, he has had to send more than $2,000 to cover the same expenses, something he does by working longer days. That means each dollar Mr. Solis sends covers less of the budget back home. In 2022, those working abroad, primarily in the United States, sent more than $61 billion to Mexico. The largest portion of that money goes to food and clothes, followed by health care, according to the Wilson Center, a Washington research organization.

Ordinarily, two films opening on the same day would be competitors. But “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer,” widely released on Friday, are geared toward different audiences. And the stark contrast between the movies — one portraying the Mattel doll’s pink-bathed universe and the other the architect of the atomic bomb — has borne a surfeit of jokes online and a conjoined hype cycle that promises eye-popping ticket sales for both.

Ray Walker had been receiving gender-affirming care in the state where he lives, and now can't. AP Photo/Rogelio V. SolisAt least 20 states have enacted laws restricting or banning gender-affirming care for trans minors, though several are embroiled in legal challenges. Opponents of gender-affirming care say there's no solid proof of purported benefits, cite widely discredited research and say children shouldn't make life-altering decisions they might regret. Then the broad effort in conservative states to restrict gender-affirming care set its sights on Mississippi. "Most people in Mississippi cannot afford to just move to another state or even go to another state for care."

SAN JOSE, July 6 (Reuters) - Costa Rica said on Thursday it has charged former President Luis Guillermo Solis with corruption, accusing him of involvement in a 2017 improper transfer of government funds to state-owned Bancredito. Solis, who governed between 2014 and 2018, denied the charges. "I categorically reject the charges that have been brought against me," the former center-left leader said in a video posted on Twitter. "I know I did not commit any crime," he said in a text message to Reuters. "This is a case that has already been prosecuted," he wrote in a text message, saying he would not comment further.

The Fed began raising interest rates from near zero in March 2022, as inflation hit a 40-year high. By last month, the Fed had taken rates above 5 percent and reached a milestone of 10 straight rate increases. Why so many? Even as the Fed has kept two feet firmly on the brakes, inflation has proved stubborn. Other economic data, like the jobs report, has shown unexpected resilience in the face of the Fed’s campaign to slow the economy.

But 69 years later, 32 school districts in Mississippi are still under federal desegregation orders. (AP) — There are 32 school districts in Mississippi still under federal desegregation orders, the US Department of Justice's Civil Rights Division's assistant attorney general said Thursday. "In our ongoing efforts to fulfill the promise of Brown vs. Board of Education, we currently have 32 open cases with school districts here in Mississippi," Clarke said. In addition to school districts, Clarke said at least five Mississippi jails and prisons have come under federal scrutiny. Clarke declined to offer more details about the case, citing an ongoing federal civil rights investigation.

The Week in Business: An Attempt to Ban TikTok

The legislation seeks to cut off access by targeting mobile app stores, like the Apple Store and Google Play, and prohibit them from offering TikTok in Montana. If the stores continue allowing people to download the app, the companies could face fines, as could TikTok. The ban is set to take effect on Jan. 1, but it is already facing a legal challenge. The Week in Business: Trump on TV

(May 7-13)CNN’s TrumpcastUntil last week, former President Donald J. Trump had not appeared on CNN since 2016. But at a town hall hosted by the network on Wednesday night, Mr. Trump, the Republican front-runner in the 2024 presidential campaign, resumed the lies and name-calling that marked his presidency. Critics of CNN’s forum said it was reckless to give Mr. Trump such a large platform for his message, especially because it proved difficult to fact check his statements in real time. The results came in: Almost 58 percent of the 17.5 million people who voted agreed that Mr. Musk should leave his post. Mr. Musk said Ms. Yaccarino, who recently interviewed him onstage at an advertising event in Miami, would focus on business operations while he would continue to work on product design and technology.
The Week in Business: The 10th Straight Rate Increase

It was the third consecutive increase of that size and the 10th straight rate increase since last March. This encroaching deadline presents a tricky political problem for Mr. Biden. Republicans are trying to extract concessions from Mr. Biden that would significantly undermine his agenda. He could negotiate spending cuts but divorce those discussions from the debt limit. There is one other possible option: a constitutional challenge to the debt limit, a long-shot plan that would rely on a clause in the 14th Amendment.

First Republic’s troubles are part of a wider banking crisis that began with the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank in mid-March. (April 30-May 6)A Highly Anticipated Fed MeetingThese days, aren’t all meetings of the Federal Reserve highly anticipated? But the Fed signaled that much uncertainty lay ahead as it sought a narrowing path to a soft landing, made narrower by the collapses of Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank.
Solis, 64, lives on the banks of Mexico's Villa Victoria reservoir, which supplies water to the bustling capital hours away but does not reach her own faucets. Villa Victoria is part of the Cutzamala System, the source of water for about six million people in Mexico City and the surrounding state of Mexico. Climate change, chaotic urban growth and inefficient infrastructure have strained Mexico's water supplies, pushing the Cutzamala System's stores to their lowest level in 27 years. Mexico City is also tapping alternative sources of water outside the Cutzamala System, including by replacing wells in the Zumpango area in the state of Mexico. But for people like Israel, who lives just a few minutes' drive from the Cutzamala System's water treatment plant and asked not to use his last name, the constitution's promise is increasingly distant.
CNN —An accused MS-13 gang member has been arrested in Holiday, Florida, and charged in what the sheriff described as a “demonic” murder of an Uber Eats delivery driver whose remains were found dismembered at the suspect’s home last week, according to investigators. Investigators believe Solis tried to rob the driver and ultimately killed him, the sheriff’s office said in a news release. The sheriff said Solis is affiliated with MS-13, a violent criminal gang with international ties to drug and human trafficking. When investigators opened the trash bags at the home on Friday, they found what appeared to be human remains in two of the bags, the complaint said. There is no known connection between the suspect and victim, Nocco said.
The Week in Business: A Trial With a Twist
  + stars: | 2023-04-23 | by ( Marie Solis | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +4 min
In an unexpected twist in the courtroom on Tuesday — after jurors had been selected and opening statements delayed — Fox News agreed to a $787.5 million settlement. But even at less than half that amount, the settlement is still one of the largest ever in a defamation case. Caveats released in August said vehicles and plug-in hybrids assembled outside North America were not eligible for the $7,500 credit. The list of eligible vehicles is expected to grow as carmakers fine-tune their supply chains and catch up with demand. When the bank reports its quarterly earnings this week, analysts expect to see an enormous flight of deposits — that is, customers pulling their money from the bank — and losses.

Among banks that have reported earnings, deposits across all the large banks tracked by The Wall Street Journal declined by about 1.5% from the end of the fourth quarter to the end of the first. That is much less than the overall 3.3% decline reported by the Federal Reserve across all U.S. banks over that time period. Even just among the large regional banks tracked, the total decline was 2.4%.
Transgender-rights advocates demonstrated in February at the Statehouse in Mississippi, where lawmakers moved to restrict some coverage for care of gender-transitioning patients. Photo: Rogelio V. Solis/Associated PressWASHINGTON—Medicaid is at the center of a widening partisan divide among states over transgender healthcare, where some Americans are denied access to gender-related treatments while others are seeing the availability of such care expand. The Medicaid insurance program, which covers more than 90 million low-income or disabled Americans, has become a way for states to signal sharply divergent positions on transgender-specific care. Republican-led states including Mississippi and Tennessee, where the GOP controls both legislative chambers and the governorship, have recently introduced legislation to restrict some coverage for care of gender-transitioning patients.
The CDC’s signoff is the last regulatory step before the new vaccine regimen can become widely available. Photo: Rogelio V. The agency also said Wednesday that people at high risk of severe Covid-19 could take second boosters of the dual-target shots, though it didn’t recommend them outright.
Throughout the U.S., diesel supplies remain tight; the East Coast in particular has been pressed to keep tanks fully stocked. Some of the supply issues go back to pre-Covid 19 events, including a June 2019 fire that took out a key East Coast refinery. Europe has been weaning itself off Russian crude oil and natural gas, but replacing Russian diesel may prove trickier. At that time, diesel prices at the retail level in the U.S. were in the $5.25-5.30 a gallon range. By the end of January, retail diesel prices should be approaching $4.75 a gallon.
