The 22-time grand slam champion said on social media on Thursday that his final tournament will be with Spain at the Davis Cup finals in November. Rafael Nadal, one of the greatest tennis players of all time, announced his retirement Thursday at age 38, bringing to a close the most dominant clay-court career in the history of the sport. Hong Kong CNN —Tucked away in a residential neighborhood in the west of Hong Kong, the Kennedy Town Playground’s basketball courts aren’t particularly noteworthy. It’s because the courts, perched on the side of a hilly slope, offer great views of the Hong Kong skyline. Many of them are followers of Xiaohongshu (Little Red Book), China’s answer to Instagram, which has also become their travel bible. CNN —For the first time in its 147-year history, Wimbledon will be removing line judges from all of its courts during the tournament. The All England Club announced on Wednesday that from the 2025 championships onwards, electronic line calling (ELC) will be used after it was successfully tested in 2024. ELC will replace the line judges who call “out” or “fault” during a match and will also be used in Wimbledon qualifying ahead of the tournament. Wimbledon successfully trialed the technology at this year's championships. Wimbledon’s adoption of the technology leaves the clay-court French Open as the only remaining grand slam yet to implement ELC.

CNN —The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) says it’s lodging an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) after an independent tribunal found world No. 1 tennis player Jannik Sinner wasn’t at fault for twice testing positive for a banned substance in March 2024. In a statement posted on social media in August, Sinner said the positive tests stemmed from “inadvertent contamination of Clostebol” through treatment from his physiotherapist. … The physiotherapist treated Jannik without gloves and coupled with various skin lesions on Jannik’s body caused the inadvertent contamination.”WADA announced that it is appealing the decision that cleared Sinner after he tested positive for a banned substance. As WADA announced its appeal on Saturday, he was playing in the round of 16 at the China Open where he defeated Roman Safiullin.

CNN —Legendary tennis player and women’s rights advocate Billie Jean King became the first individual female athlete to be awarded the Congressional Gold Medal, she announced in an Instagram post on Friday. Nine individual athletes, as well as the 1980 US Olympic team, had previously been awarded the Congressional Gold Medal which is Congress’ most prestigious way of recognizing someone’s achievements. With little time to prepare, Tampa General Hospital began erecting a 10-foot-high flood barrier around the facility Monday because of the chance for storm surge and shifts in the storm’s track. A tropical storm watch was raised Monday afternoon for Florida’s Dry Tortugas and part of the Keys and Monday evening for Bonita Beach to Flamingo, where a storm surge watch is also in effect.
