The super PAC supporting North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum has been the top 2024 ad spender since last week's first Republican presidential debate, as the group looks to help Burgum gain enough traction to make next month's debate. Best of America PAC has booked and spent $950,000 since Thursday, the day after the GOP debate, according to the ad-tracking firm AdImpact. That's more than any other candidate or group over that span, including the second and third top-spending GOP groups, the super PACs supporting former President Donald Trump and Florida Gov. After tearing his Achilles tendon the day before the first debate, Burgum spoke for just eight minutes on stage, less than every candidate except for former Arkansas Gov.

Bob Barker, the longtime host of television's "The Price Is Right" who used his combination of comfort-food charm and deadpan humor to become an American television staple, has died, according to his longtime publicist. When producers hired Barker to host "The Price Is Right" in 1972, they hit the jackpot. "From the black and white era of television right up to the new century, Bob Barker had a real presence on two really big shows," Thompson said. Barker landed a job at a radio station in Florida, and it didn't take long for word of his smooth delivery to travel across the wires. In 1950, he moved to California to start his own radio program, "The Bob Barker Show," in Burbank.

“My personal favorite was Nikki Haley,” Sarcone told CNN of the former South Carolina governor after watching Wednesday’s debate at her Urbandale home in the Des Moines suburbs. Betsy Sarcone, right, watches the GOP debate with her parents Russ and Susan Sanders. To that end, these were the two biggest takeaways from our group: Haley made a strong impression, and Ramaswamy stirs an undercard version of the Trump GOP divide. “Some Trump people may have found that attractive about Ramaswamy, right?” Betsy Sarcone said. She personally would be my favorite candidate right now.

A GOP divide in Iowa over Trump -- and over the truth

Mudd does not dispute this but says he would have more confidence if states followed the same procedures. “Nothing about that deal is the American way, I don’t think,” Mudd Sr. says of the latest Trump indictment. And it vividly captures the country’s red state-blue state divide, which includes what you think of Trump and where you get your news. Taylor supported Texas Sen. Ted Cruz in the 2016 caucuses, but voted for Trump in November 2016 and again in 2020. Shopping around is an Iowa tradition, but both understand that a splintered field eventually helps Trump, as it did in 2016.

At events for Mr. DeSantis in the early nominating states, some voters have said that they wish the much younger Mr. DeSantis would run on the same ticket as Mr. Trump. “DeSantis is four years too early,” said Jim Mai, a Republican voter in the crowd for a speech Mr. DeSantis gave in Sioux Center, Iowa, in May. “Trump should run and have DeSantis as his vice president.”But a joint ticket between the two Florida men would prove logistically challenging. So if Mr. Trump picked Mr. DeSantis, or another Florida resident like Mayor Francis Suarez of Miami, who is also in the race, he would forfeit the state’s 30 electoral votes. One solution: Mr. Trump, who switched his residency to Florida ahead of the 2020 election, could change it back to New York.

Fully remote jobs are getting harder to come by, but the competition for work-from-home jobs is especially fierce in some parts of the country. Just two years ago, remote jobs in Bend attracted about 42% of applications. Nationally, just 11% of open jobs on LinkedIn offer remote work, but they attract close to 50% of total job applications as of May. Bend, in particular, became popular among newly mobile tech workers from Silicon Valley and Seattle. Check out: How return-to-office battles and remote work are making America's burnout problem worse

Opinion What a Motherless Son Knows About FatherhoodWhen I was 8, maybe 9 years old, there was a day when students in my class could bring their parents to school. I’ve no memory of this proclamation of my paternal dreams, but I know I’ve long perceived fatherhood as a noble pursuit. My father-figure admiration likely originated from watching my dad, flummoxed by grief, in the years after the plane crash in which my mother died at age 37. My older brother, Brandon, age 6, and my identical twin, Spencer, were on the same plane sitting right beside her. The film fastidiously re-enacts the events of the plane crash and its immediate aftermath.

Now they were downriver in Council Bluffs, a city of about 60,000, and had two more events ahead before flying to New Hampshire and South Carolina for the remainder of a three-state, 12-city tour. Iowa voters are well known for demanding to see candidates up close. That means he will need to stump in places like Council Bluffs again and again before February. In her remarks, she showed herself as a fierce advocate for DeSantis’ Florida record while reminding listeners that the two are parents of three young children.

CNN —Residents of the central United States experienced poor air quality and smoke over the weekend. The effects of the fires extend far beyond Canada, with poor air quality emerging in states as far away as Missouri and New York. Several states, including Nebraska, Washington, Montana and Wisconsin, announced air quality alerts early Friday. The service in Tacoma reported the smoke would be “pushed eastward in time for the weekend.”As of Sunday afternoon, the US Environmental Protection Agency’s Air Quality Index reported “unhealthy” levels of air quality in parts of Montana and North and South Dakota. Poor air quality caused by the smoke would mostly affect those “that are particularly sensitive to particle pollution,” they said.
Ron DeSantis has said little publicly about the six-week abortion ban he signed this year or about former President Donald Trump. “Some people are at six weeks, some people are at three weeks, two weeks,” Trump told CNN’s Kaitlan Collins. “Without me there would be no 6 weeks, 10 weeks, 15 weeks, or whatever is finally agreed to. Thank you President TRUMP!! DeSantis signaled early that he intended to track to the right of Trump on at least one issue: the pandemic response.
Ron DeSantis speaks during the annual Feenstra Family Picnic at the Dean Family Classic Car Museum in Sioux Center, Iowa, May 13, 2023. Ron DeSantis is expected to formally announce next week he is running for president in 2024, NBC News reported Thursday, citing two sources familiar with the matter. DeSantis was already on track to make a public announcement about his political plans by the end of May. But he will instead make an official announcement within the next seven days, NBC confirmed. A spokesperson for DeSantis' political operation declined CNBC's request for comment on earlier reporting that the governor would be submitting key FEC filings next week.
A light display made by Daktronics on the State Theatre in Sioux Falls, S.D. Investment firm Alta Fox Capital Management this year sought the removal of the CEO and CFO at Daktronics, a maker of LED displays. Photo: Joe Ahlquist/Associated PressCompanies are taking more time to vet CFO candidates despite brisk competition for top talent, a return to typical hiring practices spurred by demand for recession-ready finance leaders as well as increased investor activism. Many companies in search of a chief financial officer over the past two years or so eased up on due diligence during the hiring process as CFO candidates often had more than one offer and hiring managers had to act quickly, recruiting experts say. What was typically a three- to six-month search and vetting process before the pandemic was sometimes cut to around two months last year.

Ron DeSantis at a fundraising picnic in Sioux Center, Iowa, on Saturday. Ron DeSantis has visited four times as many cities as former President Donald Trump this year in the state that will host the first Republican presidential nomination contest early next year. It is an early indication of how important Iowa will be for Mr. DeSantis, who is expected to announce a presidential bid by next month. After losing ground to Mr. Trump in polls of the still-forming race, he needs to find a place to make a stand in a party where the former president remains dominant. Aides say they hope Iowa, where Mr. Trump finished second in the 2016 caucuses, could be that place.

The Brooklyn writer and brand consultant, 33, has lately been trying to cut down on her screen time, so she bought an analog watch—specifically a 1979 Rolex Lady-Datejust. “That I have one less reason to pull [my phone] out of my pocket is a relief,” she said. Ms. Baxter is among the many women who, as a form of self-care, are shunning techy time-tellers and opting for analog watches (old-school tickers that actually tick). It’s a move Deepika Chopra, a Los Angeles holistic psychologist, recommends to clients experiencing smartphone or social-media overload. Janet Ozzard, 58, felt a sense of freedom after ditching her digital tracker for Shinola’s mechanical Birdy watch earlier this year.
