Hurricane Beryl, which tore through Caribbean islands this week, became the earliest Category 5 hurricane ever recorded in the Atlantic. A Category 5 is the highest on the Saffir-Simpson scale, with sustained winds of 157 mph or greater. But it was only the second Category 5 to ever be recorded in the Atlantic in the month of July. The storm’s strength has been fed by abnormally warm ocean waters driven by planet-warming fossil fuel pollution. Here are some of the stories that made headlines over the past week, as well as some photos that caught our eye.

Gold inches up after weak data fuels U.S. rate cut bets
  + stars: | 2024-07-04 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +1 min
Gold prices drifted higher on Thursday after softer-than-expected U.S. economic data fueled hopes that the Federal Reserve could cut interest rates as soon as September. Spot gold was up 0.3% at $2,362.10 per ounce, as of 0200 GMT after hitting a near two-week high in the previous session. U.S. economic data on Wednesday, including a weak services and ADP employment reports, showed a slowing economy. "A softer-than-expected ISM services report was the gift that Fed doves have been waiting for ahead of a NFP. Markets are now pricing in a 74% chance of the Fed cutting interest rates at its September meeting, according to the CME FedWatch Tool.

Brad Reinhart, Senior Hurricane Specialist at the National Hurricane Center, works on tracking Hurricane Beryl, the first hurricane of the 2024 season, at the National Hurricane Center on July 01, 2024 in Miami, Florida. Hurricane Beryl has been declared the strongest-ever hurricane in July, breaking the latest in a series of records as it causes widespread destruction in the Caribbean. On Monday, Beryl was declared a Category 5 hurricane — the highest rating on the SAFFIR-SIMPSON Hurricane Scale, declared when winds top 155 miles per hour. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) previously forecast an 85% chance of an "above-normal" 2024 hurricane season in the Atlantic. Four to seven of these are projected as likely to develop into major hurricanes, compared with an average of three.

Hotshot Wall Street lawyers are now so in demand that bidding wars between firms for their services can resemble the frenzy among teams to sign star athletes. In recent years, highly profitable private equity giants like Apollo, Blackstone and KKR have moved beyond company buyouts into real estate, private lending, insurance and other businesses, amassing trillions of dollars in assets. As their demand for legal services has skyrocketed, they have become big revenue drivers for law firms. This is pushing up lawyers’ pay across the industry, including at some of Wall Street’s most prestigious firms, such as Kirkland & Ellis; Simpson Thacher & Bartlett; Davis Polk; Latham & Watkins; and Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison. Lawyers with close ties to private equity increasingly enjoy pay and prestige similar to those of star lawyers who represent America’s blue-chip companies and advise them on high-profile mergers, takeover battles and litigation.

Basic income programs are the next victim, now on Fox. "Universal Basic Guys" stars a pair of brothers who join a $3,000-a-month basic income program after the hot dog factory where they work becomes automated. A universal basic income is often cited as a potential solution to the likely job losses created by artificial intelligence. A universal basic income would give monthly no-strings-attached cash payments to everyone, regardless of their financial status. While more cities are experimenting with basic income programs, they have also been the target of conservative ire.

Gold set for third quarterly gain; traders await US inflation data
  + stars: | 2024-06-28 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
Gold prices eased on Friday, but were set for a third straight quarterly rise, while investors looked forward to U.S. inflation data due later in the day for more clarity on the Federal Reserve's interest rate-cut timeline. After adding to its gold reserves for 18 consecutive months, official data from the People's Bank of China (PBOC) showed its holdings were flat in May. A survey by the World Gold Council, however, found that more central banks may increase gold reserves within 12 months. Gold rose more than 1% in the previous session after data showed a continued, though moderate, slowdown in U.S. economic activity. A soft set of PCE figures is required to keep hopes of Fed easing alive and further support gold, City Index senior analyst Matt Simpson said.

And they were everywhere, although, naturally, New York City was a magnet, as it has always been for L.G.B.T.Q.+ people looking for a place in which they can be themselves. New York City was where you lost your soul, and we wanted to be closer to the earth. I wore an eight-and-a-half-foot-tall Statue of Liberty costume to the Easter Parade in New York City, and Kirsten came along with me. By the time I turned 30, I’d been telling people I was older for years, because I’m not the type to bemoan the loss of my youth. Going to New York felt like this moment of emerging to a wider audience, and then I started to travel a lot.

He’s going to be a killer rebounder, monster screener and will consistently establish his position even against some of the stronger NBA players. I’m done doubting Edey, even as an NBA player. As an enormous ballhandler with serious touch and incredible vision as a passer, Topić is clearly an NBA player, even if it doesn’t all translate. Shannon is an elite athlete, but the NBA game requires more nuance, especially if he continues to be an inconsistent shooter. However, I also think he’s more than just a floor spacer on offense in spot-up situations and potentially as an off-ball scorer.

Donald Trump and Joe Biden come into Thursday’s presidential debate as incredibly well-known quantities defined by shared unpopularity and competing weaknesses. But their most important liabilities — for the incumbent, his decrepitude and his record on inflation; for the challenger, an unfitness distilled and confirmed by the events of Jan. 6 — feel too well known to be worth discussing further until we see what happens on the stage. Maybe Biden’s entire campaign will implode when he answers a question about inflation with a Grandpa Simpson ramble about the price of a frozen custard on Rehoboth Beach in 1968. Maybe Trump will turn into Colonel Jessep under Jake Tapper’s questioning and claim full responsibility for the 2021 riot at the Capitol. But before the two men meet with those or other destinies, it’s worth giving some space to their crucial secondary weaknesses, the places where each candidate’s support might be undermined among those “double-hater” voters who regard each candidate’s primary liabilities as canceling the other’s out.

This US Navy warship, at well over 200 years old, is not like the sea service's other ships, though. When it sets sail, the tall ship moves slowly, escorted by police boats and the Coast Guard and helicopters circling overhead. Dollar firm as euro wallows; yuan brushes aside China data
  + stars: | 2024-06-17 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +4 min
The dollar was firm on Monday as the euro hovered near a more than one-month low amid continued concerns about the political outlook in Europe. The yuan held close to a multi-month low after China released a slew of economic data that pointed to an uneven recovery in the world's second-largest economy. A Reuters poll published last week showed 63 of 65 economists thought a first cut would not come until Aug. 1. Elsewhere, the yuan was mostly flat at 7.2550 per dollar after domestic data showed a mixed economic picture in China. China's central bank left a key policy rate unchanged as expected on Monday as the weak yuan continued to hamper policy easing.

CNN —The USS Helena, a fast-attack nuclear submarine, surfaced in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, a day after Russian naval forces arrived in Havana to conduct drills with the island nation, a Russian ally. Navy destroyers, as well as P-8 submarine hunting aircraft, tracked the movements of the Russian ships as they made their way south off the east coast of the United States. People watch a ship belonging to the Russian Navy flotilla arrive at the port of Havana on Wednesday, June 12, 2024, in Havana, Cuba. The USS Pasadena, another Los-Angeles class fast attack submarine, stopped in Guantanamo Bay last July, sparking furor from the Cuban government, which called it an escalation. The Pentagon said the current visit of a Russian submarine to Cuba was “at least in part” a response to last year’s visit of a US submarine.

“They’re both promising not to tackle the debt,” Ryan said, coming back to the issue that has animated his political career. Trump wants to extend all of the tax cuts, which could further explode the debt without corresponding spending cuts. When Trump and Republicans enacted the current tax structure, they made individual tax cuts temporary and most of the corporate tax cuts permanent. Biden has proposed additional taxes on those making more than $400,000 to address Medicare’s solvency, among other ideas, but does not have a detailed Social Security plan. The dirty little secret in all of this is, Medicare and Social Security are going insolvent on their own.

India is one of the largest markets for gold as the precious metal plays an important role in the country's culture. Gold prices fell on Tuesday with investors awaiting key U.S. inflation data and the outcome of the Federal Reserve's policy meeting for details of the central bank's plans to cut interest rates against its inflation target. And that could see gold take another dent or two amid rising yields and the U.S. dollar," said City Index senior analyst Matt Simpson. The May consumer price index inflation report due on Wednesday will be the next major data point along with the Fed concluding their two-day meeting on the same day. "The fact that we'll see inflation data just hours ahead of the Fed's interest rate decision means we might see a last-minute panic and elevated levels of volatility should inflation come in hot," Simpson said.

Simpson, even in his final years, was somewhat of a spectacle. In his presence, heads turned and whispers swirled. When he settled in Las Vegas seven years ago, it seemed fitting that he would choose a city of escape and second acts. His lifestyle was comfortable — and far too pleasant to those who believed he deserved to spend his remaining days in prison. But there was one element that made him feel accepted in Las Vegas.
