The country's fourth-largest bank is still dealing with rising financial stress among mortgage customers as higher cash interest rates put pressure on its margins. "Liability portfolio mix continued a shift towards higher interest rate, lower margin, savings accounts and term deposits," ANZ said in a statement. ANZ recorded a continued growth in retail and institutional customer deposits while flagging a marginal rise in its gross impaired assets.

HONG KONG, July 25 (Reuters) - Shares of China's property developers surged on Tuesday following a sharp selloff in the previous session, after policymakers said they would step up support for the embattled sector. Regulator cancels license of FTX's Australian business
  + stars: | 2023-07-19 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
July 19 (Reuters) - Australia's securities regulator said on Wednesday it had cancelled the license of the local arm of collapsed U.S. cryptocurrency exchange FTX, effective from July 14. The Australian Securities & Investments Commission (ASIC) had last November suspended the license until May, taking back FTX's permit to deal in derivative and foreign exchange contracts to retail and wholesale clients. FTX Australia can continue to provide limited financial services for terminating existing derivatives with clients until July 12, 2024, the regulator said on Wednesday. The license cancellation has no effect on requirements for FTX Australia to continue as a member of Australian Financial Complaints Authority, and to have arrangements for compensating retail clients, it added. European shares edge higher, but mixed data limit gains

July 13 (Reuters) - European shares edged higher on Thursday as U.S. inflation data fuelled hopes that the Federal Reserve was on the brink of ending its post-pandemic tightening cycle, although a raft of mixed economic data limited further upside. The pan-European STOXX 600 index (.STOXX) edged up 0.1% by 0708 GMT. Keeping a lid on risk sentiment was weak trade data from China, while on the other hand, Britain's economy contracted less than expected in May. LONDON, July 13 (Reuters) - Britain's largest homebuilder Barratt Developments (BDEV.L) warned it would build far fewer homes this fiscal year as rising mortgage rates and stubborn inflation hit demand, sending its shares down more than 5% in early trading on Thursday. The FTSE 100-listed firm said it expected to build between 13,250 to 14,250 units in the year ending June 30, 2024, down from 17,206 homes the year before. Average two-year fixed mortgage rates hit a 15-year high earlier this week. Julie Palmer, partner at Begbies Traynor, said Thursday's trading update underlined the impact of rising rates on homebuyers, construction firms and other businesses linked to the housing market. High-end housebuilder Berkeley (BKGH.L) last month forecast a 20% drop in house build sales for its current fiscal year.

SummaryCompanies Dollar down 0.3%, at lowest since May 11Inflation data expected at 1230 GMTJuly 12 (Reuters) - Gold prices rose on Wednesday after the dollar and bond yields retreated as investors awaited U.S. inflation data that could offer more cues on the Federal Reserve's rate-hike policy path. Making gold cheaper for holders of other currencies, the dollar index (.DXY) fell 0.3% to its lowest level since May 11. "There has been some renewed confidence in gold prices lately, given the broad expectations for the upcoming U.S. CPI to reflect further moderation in pricing pressures," said Yeap Jun Rong, market strategist at IG. Economists polled by Reuters expect June core inflation rate to have dropped to 5% from 5.3%, still significantly above the Fed's 2% target. In the wider base metals market, prices rose, supported by a weaker dollar, although a gloomy demand outlook loomed over the market.

The dollar (.DXY) was near a two-month low on prospects of lower rates, while benchmark U.S. yields hovered near Monday's lows at 4.0018%. A weaker dollar makes gold cheaper for holders of foreign currencies. "As we've become accustomed to inflation decelerating, an upside surprise would spark the most volatile reaction and weigh on gold. Gold bulls need inflation to behave to justify a bullish breakout," Simpson added.

ZURICH, July 10 (Reuters) - Swiss bank Julius Baer (BAER.S) can double its assets under management to 1 trillion Swiss francs ($1.12 trillion), CEO Philipp Rickenbacher said in an interview with German daily Handelsblatt on Monday. Achieving the goal would mean a massive increase from the 429 billion francs in assets that Julius Baer currently manages, but it is possible, the daily reported, adding that Rickenbacher declined to give a timeline on when the target could be achieved. "But we are in growth mode and such ambitions are not unrealistic," he said, adding that attracting former Credit Suisse clients will take time.
