Can Kamala Harris Rebuild the Democratic Coalition?
  + stars: | 2024-08-02 | by ( Nate Cohn | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
With a little over three months until the presidential election, Kamala Harris inherited a Democratic coalition that was badly frayed. In polls this year, young, Black and Hispanic voters abandoned President Biden in droves. To win, Vice President Harris will need to stitch a winning Democratic coalition back together. While it’s still early, the first polls since Ms. Harris all but locked up the nomination suggest she has already made some progress. To win the Electoral College, she’ll need additional gains in the months ahead.

The case returns to Judge Tanya Chutkan one month after the Supreme Court issued a game-changing ruling on presidential power. But the Supreme Court interceded earlier this year and put the case on pause to consider Trump’s claims of presidential immunity. Attorneys working on the case believe that Chutkan will move quickly with the case back in her jurisdiction, according to sources familiar with their thinking. Any move she makes will be under extreme scrutiny, given that it’s the only remining federal case against Trump after the Florida federal judge overseeing his classified documents case, Aileen Cannon, dismissed those criminal charges against Trump and his two co-defendants. Cannon appeared to hold hearings on nearly every motion in the Trump case before her, but Chutkan often rules without hearing from the parties in person.

The sound of Harris laughingTrump, trying out new material to mock Harris, has dubbed his opponent as “Laffin’ Kamala.”“She’s crazy. The magician/comedian Penn Jillette, who spent time with Trump during “The Apprentice” years, has talked about how Trump does not laugh. That’s a recurring theme among Trump supporters – that outrageous claims are clearly jokes. It could also have a major impact on House and Senate races. We talked by email about the state of play for the House and Senate and how the shake-up in the presidential race might change things. PATHE: House races are typically more nationalized than Senate races because the candidates are lesser known; therefore, it’s harder for them to separate themselves from their party and the top of the ticket. Here’s where Harris stands on key issues

CNN —A week after announcing her run for president, Kamala Harris has yet to tell voters how she will address the key issues facing the nation. Harris has also touted the Biden administration’s efforts to lower drug costs, reduce child poverty, forgive student loan debt and remove medical debt from credit reports. Hefty student debt loads are also an area of interest to Harris. Experts credit Harris’ ability to secure private-sector investments as her most visible action in the region to date but have cautioned about the long-term durability of those investments. For President Biden and me, our sacred commitment to NATO remains ironclad.

New York CNN —ABC News is continuing preparations for an upcoming presidential debate, despite former President Donald Trump saying he won’t consider participating in a debate until the Democratic Party formally chooses its nominee. “Full steam ahead,” an ABC network source told CNN on Friday. After Biden dropped out and endorsed Harris, Trump suggested the ABC debate should be moved to the right-wing network Fox News. Opinion | Kamala Harris Needs a 3 P.M. Agenda
  + stars: | 2024-07-26 | by ( Peter Coy | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Vice President Kamala Harris has what she used to call a 3 a.m. agenda. To be an effective president, she’ll need to add a 3 p.m. agenda. When Harris was running for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2019, she put out a television ad that was pretty effective. She described how her mother, after putting the girls to bed, “would sit up trying to figure out how to make it all work,” presumably sometimes until 3 in the morning. “Because,” she intoned, “you’ve waited long enough to get a good night’s sleep.”At the time, Harris was positioning herself as a liberal in an election that had the Democrats moving well to the left.

CNN —After Vice President Kamala Harris accused former President Donald Trump of “backpedaling” on a debate, the Trump campaign said Thursday it would not commit to any future debates until the Democratic Party formally chooses a nominee. “I have agreed to the previously agreed upon September 10th debate, he agreed to that previously,” Harris told reporters after landing at Joint Base Andrews Thursday. Trump told reporters earlier this week he wants to debate Harris but has not yet agreed to anything. Before Biden withdrew from the race, Harris had positioned herself to go up against Trump’s running mate, Ohio Sen. Up until now, Harris has been defined by working for President Joe Biden, arguably the most explicitly pro-Israel American president, even though his relationship with Benjamin Netanyahu has frayed. “President Biden brought to the White House a lifelong relationship with Bibi Netanyahu and a very mature history on the US-Israel relationship,” Murphy said. “The vice president has been a strong and longstanding supporter of Israel as a secure, democratic homeland for the Jewish people. “One can criticize specific policies of the government of Israel while still strongly supporting the state of Israel and the people of Israel. CNN —First lady Jill Biden watched on Wednesday night as President Joe Biden told the American people it was time to “pass the torch” on his political career. Then she got on a plane, flying nearly 4,000 miles to Paris, where another torch was being passed. Jill Biden is arriving in Paris at a monumental time for her husband’s presidency. That unity will be on display at the Olympic Games, a rare moment in intensely polarized times.
