Graphite has uses in strategic markets ranging from energy storage to nuclear power. Photo: FABIAN BIMMER/REUTERSHONG KONG—China is strengthening restrictions on exports of graphite, a key mineral needed for the production of electric-vehicle batteries and fuel cells, the latest move in an intensifying global tussle over the building blocks of critical technologies. Citing national-security concerns, China’s Commerce Ministry said Friday that exports of several categories of natural and synthetic graphite materials would require permits under a system used to control trade in items with dual civilian and military uses starting Dec. 1.

Hong Kong CNN —China’s leader Xi Jinping is to declare the Asian Games open at a lotus-shaped mega stadium in Hangzhou on Saturday. More than 12,000 athletes from the 45 members of the Asian Olympic Council will participate, making it the largest Asian Games ever, the Chinese state media news agency Xinhua reported Saturday. The ceremony will be attended by around 50,000 people, while more than 1,200 volunteers will be at the venue to help, Xinhua reported. To promote environmental responsibility, digital fireworks will be used at the opening ceremony instead of actual fireworks, Xinhua reported citing the ceremony’s director Sha Xiaolan. Hangzhou, the home of Chinese tech-giant Alibaba, aims to demonstrate cutting-edge technologies during the games, including cloud computing and artificial intelligence at the Games Village, Xinhua reported.

HANGZHOU, China, Sept 23 (Reuters) - China's eastern city of Hangzhou stepped up security ahead of the Asian Games opening ceremony later on Saturday as organisers hope to get the sporting extravaganza off to a smooth start with President Xi Jinping among the dignitaries set to attend. Roads in a sizeable 'traffic control area' around the city's Olympic stadium were blocked off, at least one metro station was shut, and other Games centres were closed off ahead of an opening ceremony organisers say will be "mesmerizing". Some of those making the trek out towards the stadium were left frustrated by the size of the sealed off area. Organisers hope a high-tech opening ceremony on Saturday will help drum up excitement for the Games. Dozens of smiling volunteers greeted arriving journalists in Hangzhou this week, with some expressing relief that the event was finally getting started.

ZURICH, Aug 31 (Reuters) - Americans Noah Lyles and Sha'Carri Richardson cemented their status as fastest in the world this year with victories at the Weltklasse Diamond League meeting on Thursday. Kyron McMaster of the British Virgin Islands handed world record holder Karsten Warholm his first 400 hurdles loss this season, taking victory in 47.27 to edge the weary-looking world champion Norwegian who crossed in 47.30. The Olympic champion and twice reigning world champion failed on three attempts at 6.23 - what would have been the seventh time he has bettered the world record. Winfred Yavi of Bahrain passed world record holder Beatrice Chepkoech of Kenya with a lap remaining in a carbon copy of her world victory to win the women's 3,000 steeplechase. Yomif Kejelcha of Ethiopia won a men's 5,000 race in which Lamecha Girma, the world record holder in the 3,000 steeplechase, dropped out with two laps to go.

When speaking to reporters at the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary, Lyles said: “World champion of what? He did, however, spark a reaction from some NBA stars. Four-time NBA champion Draymond Green also got involved, writing on Instagram, “When being smart goes wrong” with the face-palm emoji. Denver Nuggets star Aaron Gordon, though, appeared to see the funny side, writing on Instagram: “Whatever … I’m smoking buddy in the 200m.”Kevin Durant was one of the NBA stars to hit back at Lyles' comments. “The organization [NBA] have players from different countries but do they compete against different countries.

Over the past week, at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary, Richardson has taken the transformation a step further. Online, her sometimes brash dismissal of other track athletes invited more scorn — particularly from supporters of the Jamaican team. But at the end of the day, I’ve always been with me.”Richardson is very vocal about issues facing track and field athletes. Richardson is very proud to be among prominent Black women athletes and fiercely celebrates Black womanhood. She said, wisely, after winning the 100-meter race that the most important cause she’s embracing is herself.

Lyles added the relay gold to his sprint double while Richardson had already claimed 100m gold and bronze in the 200m. It was a glorious end to the night for the sport's superpower after the earlier disappointment of seeing their highly-favoured 4x400m women's team disqualified following a baton failure in the semi-finals. But they were almost faultless on Saturday as Christian Coleman, Fred Kerley, Brandon Carnes and Lyles won in 37.38. Olympic champions Italy, with Tokyo individual gold medallist Lamont Marcell Jacobs on the second leg, took silver with 37.62. Richardson and Gabby Thomas were added to the women's team alongside Tamari Davis and Twanisha Terry and the foursome were superb in running a championship record time of 41.03 seconds.

The first three did their job so that Richardson, the individual 100m champion, was always in control. Jamaica's Shericka Jackson, the 200m champion, had too much to do as they took silver in 41.21 while Britain claimed bronze with 41.97. U.S. safely into men's 4x100m final, Canada out
  + stars: | 2023-08-25 | by ( Mitch Phillips | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
Defending champions Canada, however, failed to make it through from their semi-final on Friday. Given their extraordinary depth and quality, the U.S. men have a woeful recent record in the event. They have not won an Olympic final since 2000 and have just one gold from the last seven World Championships amid a series of fumbles and disqualifications. Olympic champions Italy, with Tokyo individual gold medallist Lamont Marcell Jacobs running a barnstorming second leg, were impressive winners of the second heat in 37.65. South Africa finished second, with Britain overhauling Canada on the last leg for the third automatic qualifying spot as the holders failed to make the final.
