Festival goers reportedly triggered an influx of 911 calls from their iPhones and Apple Watches. The feature, which goes off when a device is moved quickly, was likely set off by attendees dancing a little too hard. The vibes at Bonnaroo festival were so electric this year that they ushered in a wave of accidental emergency calls. The feature, which Apple introduced last year, is meant to detect car crashes and alert the appropriate authorities. After sending out alerts to those in attendance, recommending that they deactivate the crash-detection feature, LeDuc said the number of calls dropped by 40% to 60%."

Republican Sen. Rick Scott is reportedly considering a presidential run. According to The New York Times, Scott is eyeing a late entry into the field. The Times reports that Scott, who was also governor of Florida, is considering a late entry into the growing 2024 Republican field. CNN —Three men face federal charges for allegedly vandalizing homes associated with two New Hampshire journalists, authorities said, in suspected acts of retaliation for a published article. WBUR public radio in Boston reported the vandalism attacks targeted the homes of New Hampshire Public Radio journalist Lauren Chooljian, her parents and her editor, Dan Barrick. CNN has reached out to Chooljian, Barrick and New Hampshire Public Radio for further comment. Cockerline and Waselchuck were arrested Friday, while Saniatan remains at large, the US Attorney’s Office said Friday.

The betting is also that the latest inflation reading for May that will be reported Tuesday, just as the two-day Fed meeting gets underway, will show additional progress in the fight against higher prices. Those views have helped power a broader stock market rally on Wall Street this month. In fact, the combination of the narrow stock market rally in 2023, until this month at least, plus the low VIX reading, leads Demmert to expect a 10% stock market correction at some point. "The stock market at large is in overbought territory and investors are very complacent, which was the case prior to the past three major declines within this 18-month bear market. Between the June and September meetings, the Fed would get three more inflation and three more payrolls reports.

Don Trump Jr. re-tweeted a AI-generated clip of Ron DeSantis appearing as Michael Scott in "The Office." In the clip, the character is ridiculed by his coworkers for wearing a woman's suit. In a bizarre attempt to insult his father's 2024 presidential competitor, Trump Jr. re-posted the video with the caption, "DeSantis does seem to spend a lot of time in high heels." In the clip, Ron DeSantis's face and voice are superimposed over Michael Scott's — the character played by Steve Carell — in a scene where Scott is being ridiculed at the office for wearing a woman's suit. At the end of the scene, the AI-generated Ron DeSantis as Michael Scott looks to the camera and says, "Negotations are all about controlling things, about being in the driver's seat.

CNN —South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott on Monday will formally enter the Republican presidential primary as he seeks to upend a contest that has so far been dominated by coverage of former President Donald Trump and Florida Gov. The most prominent Black figure in the Republican Party, Scott will address supporters at his alma mater, Charleston Southern University, in his hometown of North Charleston. In 2010, he became the first Black Republican elected to the US House of Representatives from South Carolina in more than a century. Years later, after being appointed to his Senate seat (he won a special election to retain the seat), Scott made history as the first Black US Senator from his native South Carolina. “We know how dangerous Tea Party extremist Tim Scott is,” South Carolina Democratic Party chair Christale Spain said in a statement.
May 22 (Reuters) - Japan's Mizuho Financial Group Inc (8411.T) will acquire independent investment bank Greenhill & Co Inc (GHL.N) in an all-cash transaction, in a bid to expand further into U.S. investment banking. Of Japan's three megabanks, Mizuho has, however, been slower to move than bigger rivals Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group (8306.T) and Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group (8316.T). The Greenhill business will sit within Mizuho's banking division, led by Michal Katz, head of banking in the Americas, the statement said. Greenhill Chairman and CEO Scott L. Bok will become chairman of the M&A and restructuring advisory business, it added. Last year, Mizuho CEO Yoshiro Hamamoto told Reuters that the group's brokerage arm Mizuho Securities Co "has room for further growth" in the United States and acquisitions were an option it was exploring.

Amid rolling banking stress and ongoing inflation and recession concerns, the flight to high-quality funds has become more appealing for exchange-traded fund investors. "Our clients are really worried about what they see in the marketplace -- high interest rates, high inflation," Paglia said. "So, it's not a coincidence that you see high quality and low volatility being in the driver's seat." While Ladner explained the benefits of junk-seeking strategies, he affirmed that quality is still the standout factor in a slow-growth market environment. "That behavioral modification aspect to investing in a quality portfolio in a time of economic uncertainty can be just as powerful as the economic implications of doing that."

As a therapist and psychologist, I've spent 20 years hopping the fence between being caught in the drama and observing it. "I often have cravings for drama," one patient, who we'll call Helen, told me. Here are seven toxic signs of someone who is addicted to drama — and how to deal with them:1. You'll often find people who are addicted to drama consumed by what's happening in the lives of others. This is something all of us experience, but it's acute for those with a propensity for drama.

With the S & P 500 down 1% this month, and essentially flat for the quarter, the best you can say is that the overall trend has moved from down in 2022 to mostly sideways in 2023. Lowry, the nation's oldest technical analysis service, has taken to calling the rally in tech "the mega-cap mirage." Lowry noted over the weekend that "core indicators of market health have demonstrated significant deterioration from the early February market high through recent days." Even as the S & P 500 was near a new rally high for the year recently, the S & P Midcap 400 and S & P Smallcap 600 were 12% and 17% below their February 2nd highs last week. Only 46% of S & P 500 stocks are above their 200-day moving averages, hardly a sign of broad market strength.
Chief Justice John Roberts' wife's anti-abortion advocacy once helped bolster his judicial career. Details of Jane Roberts' work, though not new, are worth revisiting in the aftermath of Roe v. Wade's reversal. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts and his wife Jane exit the funeral service for Antonin Scalia. Jane Roberts' advocacy and public political beliefs ultimately helped convince two conservative legal power players, Leonard Leo and Jay Sekulow, to publicly advocate for John Roberts' confirmation, according to the Times. Bernadine Strik, a horticulture professor at Oregon State University whose innovative cultivation strategies shook up the American blueberry industry, died on April 14 at a hospital in Corvallis, Ore. She was 60. The cause was complications of ovarian cancer, said her husband, Neil Bell. Modern farming is as much science as labor, and Dr. Strik, whose career at Oregon State began in 1987, brought a skeptical, scientific approach to blueberry cultivation. “She was able to connect with the growers,” Scott Lukas, who took on Oregon State’s endowed professorship for Northwest berry production after Dr. Strik retired in 2021, said in a phone interview. She could view research “from that down-to-earth perspective,” he added, “and be a human about it and not get lost in the science.”
Some prominent Florida Democrats are eyeing former NBA stars in a bid to reverse their losing streak. NBC News reported that Democrats have talked to Grant Hill and tried to coax Dwyane Wade into running. Democrats are searching for a challenger to Sen. Rick Scott, who is up for reelection in 2024. Having Wade County is great," Wade told the publication. He hasn't been officially approached, but he is on the list of four or five dream candidates to challenge Rick Scott.
And, for once, the success of a Marvel film could bode well for the future of its longtime adversary. On the theatrical side, DC Studios has announced five new projects that will roll out starting in 2025 with Gunn's own "Superman: Legacy." "And I think Marvel Studios, sooner rather than later, needs to tell us what's going on with Spider-Man." He sees this as the result of predictable plotlines within the genre that are repeated across both studios' films. Marvel Studios
A federal immigration judge's former staffer accused him of sexual harassment in a shocking lawsuit. The lawsuit alleges LA judge Scott Laurent ranked female colleagues and lawyers by which ones were "fuckable." Esocoto also alleged Laurent ranked female colleagues, judges, and lawyers by which ones he deemed were "fuckable." Escoto also alleges Laurent often asked her to come "sit on Daddy's lap," referring to himself as "Daddy." The lawsuit alleges Garland then "acted on Judge Laurent's recommendation to fire" Escoto "shortly after receiving" her "complaints of sexual harassment, discrimination, and retaliation."
Senator Tim Scott plans to announce his decision on entering the 2024 presidential on May 22, according to media reports on Sunday, in a potential challenge to former President Donald Trump for the party's nomination. He made the announcement at a town hall in South Carolina on Sunday, according to media reports. Scott launched a presidential exploratory committee earlier this month, which allowed him to raise his national profile and continue fundraising with fewer regulatory limitations than a formal campaign. If Scott formally announces his intent to enter the presidential race, he will join former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley in the quest for the Republican nomination. Former biotech executive Vivek Ramaswamy, conservative talk radio host Larry Elder and former Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson are also Republican contenders.
The assertion in the introduction that the Fed should focus on large bank capital requirements is disconnected from the report's conclusions. AMERICAN BANK ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT AND CEO ROB NICOLS"We take any bank failure seriously, and we will review the findings and proposed policy changes in these reports carefully, including where the conclusions may differ. JONATHAN MONDILLO, HEAD OF NORTH AMERICAN FIXED INCOME AT ABRDN"We're likely to see higher capital requirements. What that means for the overall markets is that the devil is in the details: how stringent those capital requirements will be. A potential First Republic Bank failure could similarly present a risk to the long-term investment strategy of high net-worth individuals."
Many commentators linked the lessons learned from the earlier crisis to the ongoing concerns about First Republic Bank. INSTITUTE OF INTERNATIONAL BANKERS CEO BETH ZORC"The IIB commends the Federal Reserve's timeliness of producing its report on SVB. "There are similarities between SVB's situation and what is happening with First Republic Bank: both are affected by the rapid movement of very large sums of money." A potential First Republic Bank failure could similarly present a risk to the long-term investment strategy of high net-worth individuals." The Supreme Court ruled to uphold FDA approval of the abortion pill on Friday. Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito publicly dissented, with Alito writing an opinion. The ruling did not specify how most of the justices voted, or even how many justices voted in favor. For part of his reasoning, Alito focused on the "shadow docket" itself. I thought you were against using the shadow docket and changing things in these ways,'" Lemieux said.
CNN —Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the anti-vaccine activist and environmental lawyer, described himself as a truth-teller who will “end the division” as he launched his bid for the 2024 Democratic presidential nomination on Wednesday in Boston. Some Kennedy family members have denounced his views on vaccines. Kennedy lives in Los Angeles, but he chose Boston as a nod to his family’s deep political roots in the city, even though his father, Robert F. Kennedy, declared his presidential ambitions in the Senate Caucus Room on Capitol Hill in 1968, the same place his uncle, John F. Kennedy, launched his presidential campaign in 1960. “I’m a lifelong Democrat, but I will not be voting for Robert Kennedy Jr. because I cannot stomach the anti-vaccine thing,” said Tyson Humble of Portland, Oregon, who was visiting the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum. Caroline Kennedy, the daughter of former President Kennedy, is currently the US ambassador to Australia.
