The winning time of 3:08.80 broke the Americans' own world record set in the first running of the event in 2019. By the time Bol got the baton for the last leg it looked a foregone conclusion as the 400 hurdles specialist and indoor 400m world record holder has been in stunning form in recent weeks. "I don't know what happened, I cramped towards the finish line, I was pushing, pushing, pushing," Bol said. "It was definitely tough to run against Femke Bol.

Bottles of Champagne are seen on display for sale in a wine shop in Paris, France, December 20, 2022. REUTERS/Sarah Meyssonnier/File PhotoPARIS, Aug 8 (Reuters) - French wine production in 2023 is expected to be near the average of the last five years, with a favourable outlook in Champagne and Burgundy contrasting that in disease-hit Bordeaux, the French farm ministry said. Overall wine output is projected to be between 44 million and 47 million hectolitres, a range that encompasses both the five-year average of 44.5 million hectolitres and 2022 output of 46.1 million hectolitres, the ministry said in a report on Tuesday. The wine sector wants the government to expand funding for a distillation scheme so 3 million hectolitres of wine stocks can be cleared, mainly in Bordeaux and Languedoc-Roussillon in the far south, Despey said. Output was seen surpassing the five-year average in Champagne, where frost and hail caused limited damage this year, and also in Burgundy, despite some mildew cases, the ministry added.

REUTERS/Sarah Meyssonnier/File PhotoBARCELONA, Aug 2 (Reuters) - Spain's Socialists (PSOE), seeking to form a government after a hard-fought national election, should not take the support of Catalonia's separatist parties for granted, one of their leaders said on Wednesday. "It is Pedro Sanchez who has to make the moves to get support," Aragones said. To renew its support, ERC wants further talks, to cut the region's contributions to the national public finances, and to take control of local train services. Junts is demanding a referendum on independence and an amnesty for all separatists facing legal charges related to the failed 2017 independence bid. Aragones said the two parties' leverage could help obtain a referendum and amnesty, but also concessions in financial or cultural issues.

"The crucial capability gap in European defence is still political leadership," the Munich Security Report on European Defence said. The annual Munich Security Conference, usually held in February, is an influential global gathering of top policymakers and analysts to debate defence and security challenges. The report said Germany and France in particular were "missing in action" at a time when European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen and EU top diplomat Josep Borrell are driving EU support for Kyiv and joint procurement initiatives. "Under the (Chancellor Olaf) Scholz government, Germany has faced recurrent criticism for its absence in EU defence questions," it said. "The onus is on Germany and France to win back trust," the report said, adding that time was of the essence in speeding up defence cooperation.
