Mr. Torossian, who is Jewish and the parent of a Syracuse student, confronted a student protester who had a sign that said, “From the River to the Sea, Palestine Will Be Free.” University officials described him as “especially aggressive” toward students. When Mr. Torossian refused to leave, campus security arrested him. “Harassing behavior or conduct from anyone that creates a safety concern will not be tolerated,” the university said in a statement about the episode. The arrest followed an off-campus incident the day before involving a pro-Palestinian protester who the school says was not a Syracuse University student. The protester said “Heil Hitler” as he made a Nazi salute at a Jewish student and then punched the student in the face, according to a police report and an email from university officials.

Though the percentage of seriously underwater mortgaged homes rose slightly nationwide, it remains lower than pre-pandemic levels. ATTOM said the South and Midwest regions account for nine out of the 10 states with the highest share of seriously underwater mortgages. Meanwhile, among 107 metropolitan areas with over 500,000 people, Baton Rouge, Louisiana, topped the list with 13.4% of all mortgages seriously underwater.

When students took over Hamilton Hall at Columbia University in April 1968, a young Joe Biden was studying law 250 miles away, just weeks from graduation. Protests and chanting and tie-dye shirts were not his style. “I was in law school,” he later recalled. President Joe Biden said Friday during a one-on-one interview with radio host Howard Stern that he is willing to debate Donald Trump ahead of the 2024 presidential election. "I am, somewhere, I don't know when, but I am happy to debate him," Biden said in the interview. When asked in February about Trump's calls for debate, Biden merely said, "If I were him, I'd want him to debate me, too. In response to Biden's remark on Friday, a Trump campaign adviser, Chris LaCivita, said in a post to X, "Ok let's set it up!" The president's new openness for the debate comes after Trump has been advocating for a chance to go head-to-head with Biden on stage.

The October report found that around 13% of Americans reported economic hardship over the prior year due to climate change. Climate change could cost Americans born in 2024 nearly $500,000, due to higher taxes and pricier housing and food, among many other factors, ICF, a consulting firm, recently found in a report commissioned by Consumer Reports. Stan Honda | AFP | Getty ImagesOther health effects of climate change reflect more widespread shifts in global conditions. "There are clear interactions between heat waves and health conditions," said Charles Driscoll, a professor at Syracuse University who studies climate change. Climate change leads to droughts, which lead to crop failures, which cause food price spikes.

Southwest Airlines and American Airlines posted losses in the first quarter of 2024. On Thursday, Southwest Airlines and American Airlines reported losses in their quarterly earnings call. Southwest Airlines CEO Bob Jordan told CNBC the decision to cease flights had "nothing to do" with Boeing's aircraft delivery delays. "Near term, yes, we are in a tough moment," Boeing CEO Dave Calhoun said in a letter to employees on the same day.

A Southwest commercial airliner takes off from Las Vegas International Airport in Las Vegas, Nevada, U.S., February 8, 2024. Southwest Airlines on Thursday posted a wider loss for the first quarter than the same period last year and warned that Boeing's airplane delays will hamper its growth into 2025. "The recent news from Boeing regarding further aircraft delivery delays presents significant challenges for both 2024 and 2025. Adjusting for one-time items, including costs related to labor contracts and fuel, Southwest lost $218 million, or 36 cents a share. “The recent news from Boeing regarding further aircraft delivery delays presents significant challenges for both 2024 and 2025,” said Southwest CEO Bob Jordan in the company’s first-quarter financial results statement. That incident prompted a three-week grounding of the Max 9, and will delay the certification of two new models of the plane, the 737 Max 7 and 737 Max 10, until at least next year. The cutbacks are the latest sign of the widening impact of the ongoing problems at Boeing throughout the air travel system. It announced Thursday that it has trimmed its order book to 19 of those jets, shifting to 737 Max 8 jets instead. Unlike all-Boeing Southwest, American’s fleet of mainline aircraft is split fairly evenly between those from Boeing and those from its rival Airbus.

Southwest Airlines is ceasing operations at four airports, and reducing flights from others, in an effort to cut costs after its growth plans were curtailed by fewer than expected plane deliveries from Boeing. The airline, which flies only Boeing 737 planes, said on Thursday that delays from the embattled aircraft manufacturer were behind its struggles. Southwest reported a loss of $231 million for the first quarter, worse than analysts expected, sending its share price down 10 percent in early trading. To cut costs because of its curtailed growth plans, Southwest said it would cease operations at four airports from early August: Bellingham International Airport in Washington State, Cozumel International Airport, George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston, and Syracuse Hancock International Airport. It would also “significantly restructure” its flights from other airports, most notably by reducing flights at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and Chicago O’Hare International Airport.

Campaign officials are fully aware the Trump trial could dominate news coverage in the weeks to come. Even some occasional critics of Biden’s campaign strategy have not found fault in his approach to the Trump trial. The deadliest day in Syracuse police history in over 30 years began when two officers attempted to pull over a gray Honda Civic on a quiet corner outside a church. The officers soon tracked the Civic to Darien Drive in the town of Salina, a suburb about 15 minutes away.
