Why health care could be a winner heading into year-end

Health care may be the answer, if history is any indication. The Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLV) has posted a November gain in eight of the last 10 years. Health care trades at a forward price-to-earnings ratio of 22.2, while the S & P 500 has a multiple of 24. The optimism around health care comes as the sector lags the broader market. Some health care names poised to do well, according to Krinsky, are Masimo and Viking Therapeutics .

CNBC's Jim Cramer on Wednesday criticized the Department of Justice's potential remedies in the Google search-monopoly case, arguing that, if they were implemented, the California tech giant would be "a shell of its former self." In early August, Judge Amit Mehta ruled that Google used illegal practices to maintain a monopoly in the internet search market. "This is devastating," Cramer said Wednesday on "Squawk on the Street," reacting to the DOJ filing. The stock has lagged the S & P 500 considerably since the monopoly ruling was handed down Aug. 5. Including Wednesday's intraday move, shares are down more than 3.5% compared with a nearly 8% gain for the S & P 500.

Goldman Sachs thinks that U.S.-traded shares of Barclays still have a long growth runway ahead, even after already beating the market so far in 2024. The firm initiated coverage of the banking stock with a buy rating and a 290 pence per share price target on Tuesday. Goldman analyst Chris Hallam forecasts that Barclays could grow its earnings per share twice as fast as peer firms through 2027, while a steep discount on the stock gives investors an attractive entry point. ""The Investment Bank [portion of Barclays' business] is at-scale but currently under-earning," Hallam said. Hallam noted Barclays stock currently trades at roughly six times its 12-month forward price-to-earnings ratio, compared to the wider group of banks covered by Goldman that trade at seven times forward P/E.

The final three-month stretch of 2024 is here, and Wall Street is riding high. RBC head of derivatives strategy Amy Wu Silverman noted her clients are bracing for "3 standard-deviation drawdowns" in coming weeks. Then there's the upside progress made in the third quarter without the leadership of super-cap tech – the equal-weighted S & P 500 is up nearly 9% since June 30 and the Nasdaq 100 up less than 2%. Goldman Sachs here plots the S & P 500 forward P/E at the time of each initial rate cut in a cycle. For sure, a breather would make sense for the broad market, with the S & P 500 up 11 of the past 15 days. In either case, it's a notable deviation from the story of placid strength being told by the S & P 500 itself.
