Ali Bongo: who is Gabon leader ousted in military coup?
  + stars: | 2023-08-30 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +5 min
[1/2] A still image from video shows Gabon President Ali Bongo being interviewed in Libreville, Gabon, September 24, 2016. Following a stroke, his fitness to rule was questioned, sparking a failed coup in 2019 as he convalesced in Morocco. Before sitting down for a televised interview with Reuters after his 2016 election win, Bongo removed a large silver watch and several gold rings. When Bongo won a 2016 election, accusations of vote meddling stoked public anger amid a period of low crude prices and belt-tightening. In 2019, a military coup was foiled, with the coup plotters citing a lack of information following Bongo's stroke in 2018.

Gold off 3-week lows as investors brace for U.S. inflation data
  + stars: | 2023-08-07 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
Gold prices dipped on Monday as the U.S. dollar climbed ahead of U.S. inflation data this week. Still, bullion was off three-week lows after slowing U.S. job growth knocked bond yields from their recent highs. Markets also took stock of labor department data showing solid wage gains and a decline in the unemployment rate that suggested continued tightness in labor market conditions. Data on U.S. consumer prices, due on Thursday, will be in focus to assess whether more rate hikes are needed to tame inflation. Non-yielding gold is often sought as a safe investment against inflation but tends to lose its sheen when rates rise.

Gold near 3-week lows as U.S. data points to more Fed tightening
  + stars: | 2023-08-03 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
Gold bars and gold coins of different sizes lie in a safe on a table at the precious metal dealer Pro Aurum. Gold prices held near three-week lows on Thursday after a larger-than-expected increase in U.S. private payrolls in July fueled bets on more monetary policy tightening and boosted the dollar and bond yields. Spot gold was up 0.2% at $1,937.39 by 0400 GMT, trading near its lowest level since July 12 hit in the previous session. The U.S. dollar index rose to a four-week peak on Wednesday and benchmark 10-year Treasury yields were at their highest since November after data showed U.S. private payrolls rose by 324,000 jobs last month. Non-yielding gold is often sought as a safe investment during times of economic uncertainty but tends to lose its sheen when rates rise.

Etsy forecasts downbeat third quarter as demand softens

A sign advertising the online seller Etsy Inc. is seen outside the Nasdaq market site in Times Square following Etsy's initial public offering (IPO) on the Nasdaq in New York April 16, 2015. REUTERS/Mike Segar/File PhotoAug 2 (Reuters) - Etsy Inc (ETSY.O) on Wednesday forecast third-quarter revenue below market expectations, signalling softening in demand for handcrafted goods at its online market place, sending its shares down 6% after the bell. This has taken the sheen off of Etsy's COVID-era gains when consumers with disposable income splurged on decor and other discretionary products. The company's consolidated gross merchandise sales (GMS) fell 0.6% to $3.01 billion in the second quarter ended June 30. The company expects revenue for the third quarter at between $610 million and $645 million, while analysts were expecting $632.4 million, as per Refinitiv data.

HSBC raises outlook as profits nearly double
  + stars: | 2023-08-01 | by ( Michelle Toh | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +3 min
Hong Kong CNN —HSBC’s profits have soared as it continues to cut costs and cash in on high interest rates around the world. The strong performance led the London-based lender to raise its outlook for the rest of the year, citing the current consensus for global interest rates. HSBC (HSBC) now projects a return on tangible equity — a key measure of profitability — “in the mid-teens for 2023 and 2024, which excludes the impact of material acquisitions and disposals,” it said. On Monday, a UK regulator said banks needed to do more to share the benefits of high interest rates with their customers as critics point out that many savings rates haven’t kept up with interest rates. “The pace and scale at which firms pass through higher interest rates to savers needs to improve … especially at a time of higher cost of living,” said the agency.

This was “Soul Train,” the music television series that served as Blackness’ binoculars. In the middle of the Black Power era and feeding from the civil rights movement, “Soul Train” provided a fresh opportunity for Black people to see and celebrate themselves. “We wouldn’t have a house party or at a club where we weren’t doing the ‘Soul Train’ line,” she said. “Those were the fits and the looks and the moves where I think ‘Soul Train’ probably had its biggest influence.”Still, Cochrane, a Gen X-er, says that her era of the “Soul Train” — and the “Soul Train” line — moved with the times. “But it was on ‘Soul Train’ that we got to see our favorite artist, hear our beloved songs, get our style trends and language.

She was something grander than a simple pop star — she became a stand-in for a sociopolitical discomfort that was beginning to take hold in the early 1990s, a rejection of the enthusiastic sheen and power-at-all-costs culture of the 1980s. And so, in an era where late-night television performances could still prompt monocultural mood shifts, her gesture was a volcanic eruption. And she was a savvy radical — reportedly she had done something slightly different in rehearsal, and saved the pope photo for the actual show. (The photo itself had hung on the bedroom wall of O’Connor’s mother, who O’Connor later said had physically and sexually abused her as a child.) Also, she was on live television, holding court for three minutes on the miseries of discrimination and abuses of power, under the guise of being a pop star performing a song.

It's not just you: new research suggests ChatGPT's AI model really is getting dumber. There's been a growing feeling for a while now that the AI model behind ChatGPT is, frankly, getting dumber. No one can quite figure out why GPT-4 is changingWhat the research doesn't seem to identify is why this performance drop has happened. As the AI model underlying a more advanced version of ChatGPT, one that paying subscribers get access to, that's a bit of a problem for OpenAI. That said, it's hard to ignore the questions of quality surrounding GPT-4 when a whole community of AI devotees is asking them.

NEW YORK, July 6 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Oddity Tech has a sparkly foundation for its upcoming initial public offering. These features should help put a dewy gloss on the valuation before the hype eventually fades. And what does it tell us about French politics? “Currently, this fund complies with our terms of use because the funds will be paid directly to the family in question. Le Pen also tempered her rhetoric in response to this crisis, in what Marliere said was an attempt to appeal to more middle-of-the-road voters. The Marvel series for Disney+ vary in their degree of independence from the mega-narrative that threads through Marvel’s feature films. An attempt to link Fury’s experience of racism and exclusion with the plight of the homeless, persecuted Skrulls doesn’t add anything worth noting, at least in the early going. Amid the franchise tending that’s going on in “Secret Invasion,” one decision feels like a potential misstep: emphasizing Fury’s weariness and malaise. When he does get a chance to be fierce, the writing — “I’m Nick Fury. Even when I’m out, I’m in” — doesn’t hold much promise of future satisfaction.

Yes, Dyson’s Supersonic Hair Dryer Is Actually Worth It
  + stars: | 2023-06-15 | by ( Tom Vanderbilt | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: +3 min
By Tom VanderbiltI had, for the record, no interest in buying a $430 hair dryer. I had, in fact, no interest in buying a hair dryer at all. I thought, for a moment, it was a phone; then, given its placement next to the sink, I realized it was a hair dryer: the Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer. We live in an area with particularly hard water which, even after softening, sometimes leaves our hair looking a bit dull. But I didn’t really buy a hair dryer.

CNN —A section of northbound I-95 in Philadelphia that collapsed after a tanker truck caught fire underneath the highway Sunday morning could take months to repair, snarling regional commutes and cutting off a major East Coast artery, Pennsylvania officials said. Standing (and Dancing) Strong at New York City Ballet
  + stars: | 2023-05-29 | by ( Gia Kourlas | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
If New York City Ballet’s spring season could be bottled into a fragrance, it would be fresh and green, with the earthy, sweet scent of a breeze after a bout of rain. The company, seemingly all of a sudden, looks so strong, and more important, so light. As a new generation of dancers at City Ballet finds its way, there’s not only more individualism, but more cohesion among individuals. “Concerto Barocco” (1941) and “La Source” (1968) are brilliant dances. City Ballet is bigger than they are, but they know that they are its current caretakers.

When Khe told his closest confidants that he was unhappy and considering leaving BlackRock, they'd say things like "That's so risky" or "What about your daughter?" At BlackRock, Khe had job security, a seven-figure annual income, and a fancy job title. The county government decided it would erect a statue of bats – dubbed “golden bats” by savvy marketers – made from, as one could guess, pure gold. Then it took three years for renowned South Korean sculptor Byun Kun-ho to sculpt five golden bats flying through a massive silver ring. Its detractors viewed spending millions on a golden statue as a waste, while the county relies on subsidies for around 90% of its revenue. A local newspaper called the move a “flashy but hollow bureaucratic decision” that was “divorced from the local sentiment.”After an attempted heist, additional security has been installed to protect the golden statue. But the value of the golden statue has attracted unwanted attention too.
The 2018 comedy “Book Club” had a simple, sturdy spine of a plot: Four longtime friends (Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen and Mary Steenburgen) power up their sexual prowess while panting over — and mocking — the best seller “Fifty Shades of Grey.” At some point during the brainstorming of “Book Club‌: The Next Chapter,” the returning director Bill Holderman and his co-screenwriter Erin Simms must have decided they could ditch the book gimmick. With a cast this beloved, who cares what they’re reading? This sequel opens with a formal quote from “The Alchemist” and, when pressed, mutters about how its author Paulo Coelho embraces fate. But that’s just a spaghetti-thin excuse to send the pals on a frenetic adventure through Italy with no time to crack open a paperback. Our close familiarity with the cast is the sole thing giving this fluff a sheen of emotional weight.

CNN —Starbucks is betting big on olive oil infused coffee, hoping customers will be enticed by the anomaly and the health benefits of extra virgin olive oil. Science behind the painOlive oil is a staple in Mediterranean culture and some drink bits of olive oil in the region daily. But the Starbucks drink has a potentially fragile combination: caffeine, which is a stimulant, and olive oil, which is a relaxant. Former CEO Howard Schultz picked up this habit himself from olive oil producer Tommaso Asaro while in Sicily, Italy. “He thought it was a little strange.” Asaro is the chairman of United Olive Oil, through which Starbucks is sourcing its olive oil.

TSX pads quarterly gain as interest rate concerns ease

The Toronto Stock Exchange's S&P/TSX composite index (.GSPTSE) ended up 158.90 points, or 0.8%, at 20,099.89, its highest closing level since March 8. For the month, the TSX lost 0.6% as global banking turmoil led to a selloff in heavily-weighted financials and volatility in the price of oil. It was up 3.7% in the first quarter of the year but trailing a gain of 7% for U.S. benchmark the S&P 500. It was up 2.4%, helped by a 14.4% jump in the shares of Blackberry Ltd <BB.TO> after the company reported quarterly results. Shares of Shaw rose 3.3%, while Rogers was down 2.9%.

The battle over Herman's NDA is a window into Woods's longtime obsession with privacy. In October 2021, exhibits and transcripts were sealed in an unsuccessful case brought by the family of an employee at Tiger Woods's restaurant who died in a drunk driving incident. When Woods's image imploded in 2009, he used nondisclosure agreements to stanch the gush of details about his personal life into the media.
